Help Moment 2.1 Update Thread

I have had my moment for just over a month now. I did the 2.1 upgrade on Sat May 22nd. I think the upgrade suck, yes it may be faster, but thats about it. Before the upgrade I could go all day on a charge using the web, talking texting, pics, but now, Sheesh, I went to school for 5 hours and had a 40% battery left, and I made 1 phone call on break, where did the rest go. I called Sprint about this and they said "thats the adroid for you, it is an internet based phone". I looked in the menu, settings, about phone, battery status then android and there must be 25 programs running that CAN NOT be turned off, way to go Samsung. Any ideas? They say you can not go backwards either with the software, but I would like to try.

Thanks
Tim

I recently upgraded to 2.1. I have since learned that several of the features I was looking forward to were not included for the Moment (live wallpapers, 3d gallery). I understand that some mods can be done to get them, so I'll look into that.

What about the 5 home screens though? I still only have 3. I don't want a whole new Home screen system like Open Home or Panda Home. The only additional home screen feature I really want is more Home screens.

Am I missing the option in the settings to go from 3 to 5? I've looked everywhere for a setting but haven't had any luck or else just overlooked it.

Any help would be appreciated!

Still only 3 screens with 2.1 (also true on the Droid btw).

I use LauncherPro... it is a VERY lightweight and amazingly fast home replacement. Much faster/lighter than Open Home/Panda/Helix etc and you can choose 5 or 7 homescreens. ;)

/BD

I use Helix since it has the perm shortcuts next to the launcher for 4 items. I delete the home launcher using root once installed and have had no glitches or issues once helix set as home.

Wow. I wish I'd done more research regarding what you're really getting with 2.1. None of the features I was truly interested in are even there. I don't get it....

Although, I have had trouble finding any place that details all the features missing anyway...so more research may not have stopped me.

Thanks for the info guys. I haven't tried those 2 home screen apps, so I will have a look. Appreciate the help.

You can get a task killer and try that, but there seems to be some disagreement on that. I use a task killer after every restart, but only then. I also have the Joeykrim kernel installed. The kernel provided my with much better battery life. Also, if your in a bad service area, turn off your data sync until you get to an area with better service. Every little thing adds up. Also, if your phone feels like it is getting hot, you can be sure your using a lot of battery.

So, the update froze just after it started updating my phone and fried it. I took it in to the store and they agreed to the fried status and replaced it with a new one that they proceeded to update to 2.1 before giving it to me. They fried that phone themselves. They then have me a different new phone and DID NOT update it and told me they would contact me when they felt they could safely update it to 2.1. Not a great success rate going there!

Maybe I should go back to a crappy flip phone that doesn't do a dadgum thing!

Following the instructions exactly, the update from Sprint to 2.1 hosed the phone. Had to take it to the store for a fix.

Is this ready for prime time?

If you see my note, I fried one phone and the store fried one phone. I don't know why some work and some don't. I have a sneaky suspicion refurbished phones may be more suseptible, but just a hunch. The store fried a brand new phone out of the box doing an upgrade. I had no problems upgrading until the actual upgrade started and froze. I would faint if anything I did ever went smooth went Sprint...

has anyone had an issue since the update with the phone going into a state where the screen is black(asleep) and the phone cannot be woken up or powered on except by removal of the battery? I've had it happen 4 times since I updated 24 hours ago.

I occasionally have had that a problem before the update....

what does a fried mean?

I took mine back, I wonder if Sprint did a hard reset after they updated it, whatever a hard reset is.

I had more problems including the airplane mode after the update. I had data freeze, google window issues, and bluetooth issues. The phone synced fine BT before the update, but had airplane mode.

I see I'm not alone; my battery life is horrible now; it was 12-16 hrs on 1.5, now I'm lucky if I can get 5, & I mean extremely lucky; same apps, actually less widgets than I had runnin on 1.5, network is the only think continually runnin but that was the same on 1.5 so I really don't get it :o

Fried means the update turned my phone into an inoperable piece of scrap metal. It no longer works and cannot be reset or rebooted or restarted regardless of what the store does.

LauncherPro is great! Thanks for the tip!

Alrite so I can say with much confidence that my battery life is back to where it was now after the root; I fully charge it @ 1am lasnite (this morn|whateva u wanna call it) & this morn when I woke up @ 8 it was still on 100%; since the upgrade regardless to what the charge was, if I left it off the charger over nite it was dead or on it's way once I awoke...

I actually like the upgrade... The voice command texting, and the new google search on the home page.

I like the new look of the market.
I also very very much love the new texting thing, like when you're using the touch screen and you mistakenly punch the wrong thing, the predictive text is very accurate.

See I just got my moment about a week ago, and just upgraded it 2 days ago. So, pretty much I like what I see now compared to what it was before.

2.1 RUU: things I've noticed...

1. still randomly freezes on my wife occasionally
2. camera viewfinder looks HORRIBLE. pics come out the same (decent in light, terrible in low light), but the viewfinder looks very pixelated, blocky, and low res.
3. contacts manager is now fubared (i've posted about this issue in another thread). local contacts don't show up w/o toggling google contacts. if you don't use google contacts, and prefer local contacts, it is frustrating, and requires unsyncing google contacts, BUT 'displaying' (i.e. un filtering) those google contacts you downloaded, then deleting those google contacts, all to show local contacts. Hero does NOT have this problem.

so... it's a frustrating little tank phone. is there a root method available yet for official 2.1? i have more faith in the community than samsung or sprint ever getting it together. so glad I bought a hero for myself but that doesn't solve wifey's problems.

tia!

Ok I need help......I finally tried to update my phone to 2.1, BUT it is not working. I followed the directions exact. When I get to the part were it says to connect the usb to the phone and the pc it just sits there for ever (let it sit there for @ 10 min the 1st two times). If i unplus the usb from the phone or the pc windows says a USB device malfunctioned and it not installed.

I have restarted the pc 3 times and tried the process over 3 times now but same problem. When i get to that part it just doesn't do anything at all.

Sigh......should i just go into a sprint store and trust them to do the update??

Hey kevinrs, I'm having the same prob with phone turning itself off and having to pull battery 1, 2 or 3 times to get phone to turn back on. Before official 2.1 upgrade I only had this prob once or twice a month. Now it's every day. No longer have airplane mode problems but at least I knew how to fix that! Plus when trying to place a call phone freezes & doesn't call out & I can't end call unless I power off. I lose connectivity several times a day and have to restart. Its a good thing I don't get easily frustrated! My mom, brother & I got Moments in Feb and they traded theirs in for LG lotus. I'm sticking it out cuz I love android & don't mind trblshooting but sometimes its like wtf? otherwise I love 2.1.

I went through this too. I watched the video in this post so I could get the drivers installed and it worked. Maybe it will help?

Samsung Moment Windows 7 USB Complete Video Walkthrough Install Guide.

Windows 7 works fine for the update.
Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit even.
I did it.
Download and install a backup software.
I used one good for a 30 day demo free.
30 days was plenty of time........

some of it saved to the sd card and some to the web.

read the directions on the sprint page very carefully.
remove the sd card, don't want to lose your files or settings.
and yes you reboot it and plug the cord in and out a few times.

The update is nice.
The battery life in town is better, but when i went to pismo it seemed to die a little faster on the beach than in town.
