Root Motorola Camera/HDMI Petition

I signed the petition, but I really doubt it will even be seen by anyone with any power in the matter at Motorola. It's a large company, there are a lot of hoops to jump through to get this kind of thing done, assuming they even care to get it done.

If anything, I would guess Google might be more recipient to something like this. Google is all about open source and encouraging Android development. Since they now own Motorola Mobility, they might be bothered enough by this to actually release the code (or tell Motorola to do it).

I'd suggest we start a Google petition.
 
I signed this petition. But honestly I do not think it is going anywhere. :( Most likely Motorola does not own the rights to the driver source codes, and they won't able to release them.
 
And yes, I agree, i think pulling google strings should be much more effective, than trying to contact Motorola.
 
I signed, Ive been following the ICS update since Mantera and want to hopefully be able to witness a working camera on the ICS Motorola Triumph before I switch to the Nexus 4 this Christmas :(
 
There's nothing that says they have to release the drivers, they're completely proprietary unlike the kernel.

Actually that is not entirely correct. Just for an example the drivers for our HDMI adv7525.c I have yet to find these anywhere else, even CAF kernels. Also based on our kernel we have FIH information which you will not see in any other standard kernel. So yeah this kernel is proprietary just like the rest of the phone.

I have added my name to the petition. I am anxiously awaiting a working camera for ICS. I've been running MTDEV CM9 since about an hour after I brought my Triumph home from Best Buy a month and a half ago. But not having a camera is rather frustrating at times, and right now it's all I can do to stick with ICS and not downgrade to CM7.

A big thank you to g60 for starting this petition, and for the time and hard work you have put into making the Triumph into what it is (and WILL be!). You are appreciated by all of us.
 
The kernel is proprietary but its bound to the gnu gpl v2 because its forked from mainline Linux(thank god for Torvalds!) So source must be released if anyone makes any changes!

However the drivers on the rom side are released using Apache licensing and releasing code is optional. So the HDMI Hal and camera Hal are licensed under Apache not gnu gpl v2 so they don't have to release it. But they can if we bug them enough!!

Exactly.

They must release kernel source, anything else is up to them (most companies won't release proprietary options)

Devs on other gb devices I've owned have always reverse engineered the drivers to get camera working on ICS ROMs
 
I don't really see the problem with them releasing the source code for the camera and HDMI. Unless they don't want of embarrasment of dedicated people like G60 and MTDEV doing what they should be doing. If Motorola as a company could do something as simple as releasing an update for phone why wouldn't they do that. After all, it's the folks like us that are their bread and butter in the first place. Without customers Moto doesn't even exist. If MTDEV can make CM9 or ICS work, then why can't Motorola. Is there more ?? to ponder here or does motorola just not care? :D:D
 
I received a reply from Motorola mobility. The person handling the case seems very open to our situation. He said that he would definitely try to help us out but he wants to know why we want to obtain source code. Since g60 is the master of the triumph, I will wait for his personalized reply that he feels would impact our situation for the better. What is our situation? installing cyanogenmod is a void of warranty, so you need to make it sound pretty good.
He admitted that they do not have the source on file, but the source does exist. If we play our cards right then the code is as good as ours.

On another note, my birthday is coming up, and I will be retiring my triumph to my fiancée :) and I will become a member of the Evo V thread. I will try to give one last gift: since my fiancée is going to get my triumph, I am going to try making a pink u9000 ICS theme. Anyone who wants to help me change text color, I would greatly appreciate it.
 
Perhaps if they cannot be persuaded to release the two source codes, Perhaps they would be open to looking at what we have for an ICS Rom and release an official update? Just a thought. If I were G60 and the other I would be hesitant to release anything to Moto. it would be our luck that they would release the update and then take credit for it.

hahaha, I like the part where they ask you why you want the camera and HDMI source code... This should be obvious! Maybe because we are stuck on Froyo(officially anyways, but we know better) on a phone that can easily support ICS and beyond.
I also really like the part where he says that they still support the Motorola Triumph. That's a good one! I almost spit coffee all over my laptop when I read that.
They got jokes at Motorola! :p
