Root Motorola Droid Bionic - All Things Root Guide

Having trouble with getting motofail to work:

I extracted to desktop, tool appeared to run successfully, but did not root the phone. I'm running android 2.3.4 and firmware version 5.9.902. It did the two reboots and didn't give me any errors, so I'm stumped as to why the root didn't take.

Do you have the Motorola drivers installed, as well as the phone in USB debugging mode and charge only?

Long time Droid X user and just switched to the Bionic. I want to root my Bionic but I can't get the 32 bit drivers to download using the link from the original post. Any help.

I root to freeze bloat and add some apps like ad blockers.

Motofail hangs right at the start, "Waiting for device..." Does not go any further, have left it sitting there for 20+ minutes. Stock bionic, running .905

Do you have the Motorola drivers installed? Make sure that you also have the phone in USB Debugging mode.

It's also a good idea to try other USB ports on the computer as well, as sometimes the front ports are not as reliable as others, random Windows bugs, etc.

Sorry should have been more thorough. 64bit drivers installed, usb debug and charge only. Using the port on my laptop right next to the PSU, figured it would likely be the one that is best. Will try ports on the other side.

So I figured I would start from square one. I grabbed the 64bit driver again to reinstall just in case. Ran through install process and it fails because I have a newer version of the drivers than the one from the 64bit link in the motofail guide.

Huh. Well newer drivers shouldn't be making the process fail. That's strange indeed.

Did a factory reset on it, got it rooted just fine after that. Strange that it was hanging for no reason before though. Oh well. First rom did not help with my data connectivity issues, which only seem to happen regularly at my home. On to the next rom I guess. Any suggestions? I think I am going to try to find an ICS leak next.

Well, the connectivity is mostly dependent on the area that you live in and the radio version that is on the phone, neither of which a ROM can really change. You can go to a leak build (.232 is the newest) and try it out. If the problems only happen in one place (say your home), then it most likely can't be caused by your specific phone (perhaps you can inquire to others in your area with 4G devices, as there may be a problem with a Verizon tower or something silly like that).

If you do a leak build, remember that they are not official, therefore not as stable nor on the OTA path (that's why this guide doesn't cover leaks). I'm on .232 with CM9 and everything works pretty well so far.

Alright guys, just a little update on this thread.

I will be updating this completely once the official build of ICS is pushed in an official OTA. There are so many nuances with the current ICS leaks to make a cohesive guide without it changing every day.

As for the weird text appearing in the guide, our jumptos on the forum seem to be borked. Once we get a real build of ICS, this thread will be pristine.

You have my word!

I am running system version 5.9.905. Can I still use the rooting tools from this thread?

TIA,

_J

Also my question (i see you answered tehsusenoh) but which tools specifically? The 902 method should work?

A buddy is dropping the bionic off to me today to root for him. He was disappointed in stock so I am trying to hook him up proper.

Any advice or suggestions for me?

for .905 and anything Gingerbread Motofail should work

To root your Bionic:

  1. Install the Motorola Drivers:
  2. Download motofail
  3. Put your Bionic into USB Debugging and USB Charge Only modes
  4. Run motofail's run.bat
  5. ????
  6. Profit
ICS 6.7.2231 to 6.7.242 needs Razrs Edge

Just be aware that ICS should be pushed out by the end of the month and you will probable need to Root again after the update. Also if you root after taking the ICS update, Motorola phones will forever show the phone has been rooted on the recovery screen. Yeah, sorry guys about the not-so-frequently updated first post. Still waiting for ICS to be officially released so I can re-do everything.
