Motorola Droid Bionic - Replacing Droid X?!?!

Whatever you do, no not buy a samsung!!! LOL

No the bootloader is not locked down like Moto is, but the morons at samsung can't even put out a correct kernel source, and the updates are nonexsistant.

If it wasn't for the hard work of people like JT and Birdman, we would have nothing for the fascinate because they have to spend all their time working on building a working kernel that will actually boot because samsung won't release the correct source.

I'm not a huge fan of Moto locking their bootloaders either, for everyone who is saying you can run custom roms on the X, kinda sorta, while it is a custom rom, it built on top of blur becasue it needs blur componants to function. For those who say "who cares about Cyanogen, we have an "aosp" rom out", they guys at Cyanogen are working on stuff their roms can do that leaves companies like Moto and samsung scratching their heads trying to figure out how they accomplished what they did. Just for example, no company has been able to figure out how Cyanogen put lockscreen juesters into CM 6.1. With true aosp builds, you have people working on them whose brains function on a much higher level then the monkeys that actualy do the building for the major companies. Just my 2 cents :D

2.4? Do you mean Gingerbread? If, so, the Bionic will definitely get that.

Also there was a report yesterday indicating 2.4 would also be called Gingerbread. Not sure if that is what he was meaning to say, but 2.3 & 2.4 are reportedly both going to be called gingerbread.

In my post...I quoted his words, and he didn't mention the word "Gingerbread". He said 2.4, so I wanted to make sure. Did you read his post and see the word "gingerbread"? And he actually said, "you'll care when 2.4 comes out and Moto decides to not release it for the DX"

What in the world would make him think that Moto wouldn't upgrade a brand new high end device to just the next software level, I don't understand.

simple because the bionic would be their new flagship and the x would be old news

Dude, nevermind. I was mistaken. I was looking at "Droid X", but thinking Droid Bionic, and that he was saying the Droid Bionic wouldn't get the Gingerbread update. lol, I will be quiet now. haha

Technically Motorola has updated the Droid X, it went from 2.1 to 2.2. There is no guarantee that 2.3 will come to the Droid X, especially 2.4. I would say there is a good chance to get 2.3 though.

Still no guarantees, especially with this phone coming out. But I would say look at the Droid, it got 2.2 after the Droid X came out.
 
So many android phones coming out on Verizon I dont know what to do, I got the Droid the day it came out and I like the idea that the Droid has stock android(straight google experience) and no blur on it... the Thunderbolt looks impressive but I am not a fan of Sense UI and the Blur on Droid X is tolerable but annoying at the same time...I wish Verizon had a Google Experience phone like a Nexus type.
 
Alot of misinformation going on in this thread. The Samsung Fascinate does in fact come with a locked bootloader. SAMSUNG just sucks at writing software and it was easily bypassed. The Droid X and the Droid Bionic DO NOT have motoblur like the the Backflip, Cliq, Defy, and the Atrix will. The blur on the Droid X and Droid bionic is basicly just a custom launcher and some widgets. The locked bootloader is whats preventing full customs roms but there are alot of really great roms out for the Droid X and I am sure there will be for the Bionic as well. I can do just about anything on my Droid X that a custom kernel would do so the locked bootloader issue is way overblown. I am overclocked to 1400Mhz at super low voltage with a custom rom with a Gingerbread theme. What else is a custom kernel really going to get me? Also the locked bootloader and efuse are two seperate things. You do not need a locked bootloader to have efuse and you do not need efuse to have a locked bootloader.

you are so wrong the samsung bootloader is not locked the moto bootloaders have the efuse which makes moto products unable to fully mess with unless you want to risk bricking your phone

You have a "Gingerbread Theme" but do you have Gingerbread? I have an HTC Incredible and I have Gingerbread.

even samsung "locked" the bootloader on the galaxy s phones...but did the most half-assed job of it they possibly could and it was bypassed in like a day

motorola just seems committed to spending a lot of money in encrypting the bootloader....i guess on their balance sheets it made sense somewhere...but certainly not in the good will department :(

if motorola ever abandons the omap processors though, then it may be interesting as it would seem TI is heavily involved in the encryption process....and it would remain to be seen what would happen on the first generation of a non-TI motorola product

I am not the only one the thinks Samsung has a locked down bootloader and nitsuj17 knows what he is talking about. I also read some about it awhile back. Will try to find the link for you.

Well everything I need and want from Gingerbread is in the theme I have on my Droid X. The point is that even though you have a port of Gingerbread its not fully baked yet so there are compromises to any device out currently. I was just stating that IMO the locked bootloader in the Motorola devices is a bit overblown.

I don't know all that stuff but I do know I have an HTC and enjoy not having a lock bootloader. I wish the moto and sammy didn't.
 
My post (#49) editted to reflect that Samsung did attempt to lock the bootloader on the galaxy S. But nothing like on the Motorolas.

I personally don't want a 4.3" screen, it's just too big for me. Because of that issue I'm kind of disappointed with the VZW's 4G phones introduced at CES this year, they're all 4.3". The Atrix is the phone I want...but alas, I'm tied to vzw.
 
I wish the specs for the phone are more concrete, first they 1gb of ram but they are saying 512mb. And is .3in a real deal breaker? I am not sure if it has Tegra 2 but nonetheless the phone is promising
