Motorola Droid X Announced Today

It's the Motorola Droid X, not the Motorola X.
Yeah, you can't leave out the Droid in the name, otherwise everyone might not have a clue what your talking about. I mean with all the other Motorola x's around and all. ;)

I don't know, I have been trying to get hyped up about this new phone, but really, my Droid can still do a lot of the same stuff that this one can do, and it's rooted and able to tether for free. I'm honestly kinda thinking that is the reason why Verizon may be pushing the early upgrade, they know we do it on our droids now, but they didn't have the software in place to track us on the original Droid, but now they do on the x and they want all us to swap so they can charge us if we do..

I was thinking of getting this but have decided to get Evo instead. While vanilla android is best, i will say Sense much better then Motoblur.

Plus Evo has front camera, kick stand..and while I like verizon the rumor is they are going tiered data later this year. With sprint trying to gain customers as much as they can I think they will stay unlimited to be attractive. And their 450 min plan? Its mobile to mobile on ANY network..so u only use minutes when u call land lines which is rare now. I only do to call like bank or something.
So between phone and monthly plan the Evo is the way to go. I just hate the Evo not having dedicated camera button.

@ Guardian - I would double check the Evo forums...Seems to be many problems with it...Then again my friend has one rooted and seems to have no problems. I would give each phone a detailed once over if I where you...

Nice. Thanks for the link.
OK, the Droid x not having froyo at launch is lame. And what was they talking about, an extra $20 a month for an extra 2 gigs of data on top of your "unlimited data package" that in itself is whack. I understand that tethering wouldn't be free, but that didn't make sense to me...

I believe what it means is you pay $20 a month for the data plan, limited to 2GB...so that's a new option rather than the current $29 unlimited plan (unsure if they will still offer that as well, or have that at an increased price).

you pay 29.99$ for the internet on your smartphone, and then if you want tethering you pay 20$ for that, so a total of 49.99$ for both internet and tethering.

While im still leaning towards the Evo (no idea will i get some hands on time with both) heres my take on both:

Both the Evo and Droid X are great phones. There are plusses and minuses to both.

Evo:
+Front facing camera
+Kick stand
+Fairly fast shutter speed on camera
+Sense is much better the Motoblur (stock is obviosuly the best)
+uses the newer touch sensor tech that supports "unlimited touch"
+SprintTV actually decent
-No dedicated camera button
-Snapdragon and battery size makes horrible battery life.
-Smaller built in mem.

Droid x:
+physical buttons vice capacitive (personal preference but hey)
+Dedicated camera button
+A better processor that is more power efficient.
+GPU is better
+8gig internal storage and 16 gig card included
+3 mic's
-no front camera(gimmick or not better to have and not use then not have and cant use)
-Motoblur(this has a newer version but going by old one it is lacking)
-getting close to the "its too big" category.

AS you can see they are both great phones where the minuses are kinda nitpicky.

But the OVERALL picture is also important so lets consider service:

Sprint:
+Unlimited data that will probably stay unlimited to get signups that they are desperate to get.
+450min 69.99 plan is unlimited mobile to mobile on ANY network..you only use minutes to call landlines which is rare these days
+while all built in apps suck..sprints are less so.
SprintTv actually decent while Vcast kinda stinks.
+Largest military discount for our troops.
-coverage less then verizon
-gonna be a while before 4g is in NON-metropolitian areas and when it is its Wimax (which i think is the better tech) which is gonna be the new CDMA that the world will NOT use.

Verizon:
+Best coverage
+Going LTE route for global sync
+better customer service(ive had both..personal opinion)
+huge push for Android and great Google partnership
-more expensive plans
-strong rumor they are going tiered data later in the year ala ATT

Its a hard choice. Im on Verizon..its gonna come down to hand on time with both and detailed analysis of what my out of pocket monthly expense will be for each.

PS: to all complaining about the tethering costs...there are a number of FREE tethering apps on the market. I use my droid as an internet connection for free everytime my cable goes out.

If you believe Vanilla is best, Droid X is the way to go. When you initially receive your phone, Motoblur will be hidden.

Hidden does not mean gone. Vendor overlays have lead to very slow or non existent upgrades so far with android.

I didn't read through every single post on here about the Droid X launch event today, so forgive me if this has been asked or answered already...was there no mention of a release date for the upcoming Droid 2? I was hoping they might have at least revealed the specs on the Droid 2. I'm anxious to upgrade to a Droid but I wanted specs for both the X and 2 before I make my decision. I have read about the rumored specs for the Droid 2 but I don't trust any of that until it becomes official. If the D2 takes forever to get released, I'm going to jump on the X. I know I'd be happy with either one.

Hopefully Froyo will come in the summer. The 2.0/2.1 update was supposed to originally come to Eris in Dec, then Jan, then March.....

No the 20 dollars is for the mobile hot spot app

well that sucks i just bought my moto droid exactly 31 days ago....HA oh well wont get a new one till 2012 now maybe by then something will be there. that sucks LOL good luck with all that do get one. Looks like to be a hell of a device !

I'm in the same boat as you. Joined Verizon and bought my Droid back in late Feb, so my upgrade date seems like its a lifetime away. Still, I try to look on the bright side. As when its time for us to upgrade, the phones out then will most likely be a bit better then the ones out now. Maybe even LTE phones to boot. Still though, I will be a bit envious of Droid X owners now.

And when they are still only 1 year through their contract and you have your latest and greatest android device, they will be envious of you :D

I went to a VZW store and they didn't have any...I think the launch got pushed back to July...?

This title is so wrong, I'm about to change it.

It was announced today...that it would release on July 15th.

btw, if you guys wanna see the Droid X, Josh Topolsky is just about to go on the Jimmy Fallon show :)
