Must-Have apps for the EVO 3D

The one app I rely on every day is Roam Control. I don't have much of a Sprint signal at work, and the app lets me force my phone over to Verizon. I get great battery life and I don't miss/drop any calls. I don't think I could stay with Sprint without the app.

Well, I got SwiftKey from the Amazon Free App of the Day thing. I have to say, I really like it. Even on a fresh install, the prediction is pretty darn good. Having actual cursor arrow keys on the keyboard is also fantastic. I haven't messed with the voice stuff yet, but honestly, with as well as the keyboard works, I am happy as is.

Isn't that extra air time though?

So this isn't a complete list, but just the "must haves." (Keep in mind that I'm new to android.)

Bible
SwiftKey X (free app today at amazon)
Amazon Appstore
Google Goggles
Barcode Scanner/ShopSavvy/Google Shopper (whichever you like)
Facebook
Words with friends
Lookout Mobile Security
Angry Birds
Pandora
Shazam

doubleTwist

Since I am very used to my iPod (which just stopped working recently) and iTunes, this is the easiest way to switch over and get away from it in my opinion. The desktop software looks just like iTunes and syncs right up with your phone, and the the app on the phone works great. It also can take and easily convert and bring over your whole iTunes library for you. It is hands down my favorite app on my phone. I think this app can bring A LOT of people from iPhone's over to Androids.

Here are some of my must have apps

Tune Sync

Go SMS

Dolphin Browser

Audio Manager Pro

Skype

Paper Toss

Toss it Which is like paper toss but you can throw an Iphone in the trash

Point inside

Whatever your Banks is their App if available

Roaming does count against your anytime minutes, but that's not a problem for myself. You have to be careful not to use too many minutes or data, Sprint reserves the right to terminate your contract if you do (look at the roaming policy for specifics). That being said, I've been roaming 5 days a week for 5 years and haven't had any problems.

Why would they terminate your plan? I thought roaming was an additional charge, and not anytime minutes?

Roaming is included in all of Sprint's plans, and operates as regular minutes would... they (Sprint) just asks that the roaming minutes not be the majority of the minutes you use.

I've been installing quite a few apps since I bought the phone.

I turn on Waze while I drive to work. It's a great app, but will become even better as more people start using it.

Some of the tools I've been using are Wifi Analyzer, Folder Organizer, the HTC flashlight, Soundhound, Barcode Scanner, Google Sky, JuiceDefender, Where's My Droid, RemoteView, Convertr, Point Inside, Lookout, and Qik.

As far games go, the ones I come back to are Battleheart, all the games made my Creative Mobile, Snes9x EX, Pocket Legends, Naval Clash, Chess.com's app, and lastly the phenomenal Amazon Store which offers up a bit of everything.

For productivity, I have Catch Notes, Days Left, and all of the Google cloud apps.

My multimedia apps include TuneWiki, Pandora, Free MP3 Downloads from G-tunes Mobi, Pandora and Soundhound. The European music streaming service (I forget what it's called) doesn't support Android yet, but I'm probably going to try that out.

I've tried the other keyboards, but the HTC keyboard is probably the best. There is one problem with it though. The Swype functionality doesn't work in all the input areas, but I think that the size of the keyboard and the accuracy and speed of the trace function makes it better than Skype.

A lot of the apps I've picked up through reading the forums which is probably the best app of them all :)

I have a question....

Is Lookout worth it/necessary/useful? It was a resource (battery) hog on my EVO. I just upgraded to the 3VO and am wondering if it still tolls the battery as hard ?

Looks like Flext9 is on sale for 1.99 at the Amazon app store. Now I can finally compare it to SwiftKey X, which is what I am currently using. Will come back to this later.

Not really. Personal awareness will save you more than Lookout, IMO. Click on my signature and click the first show button (for General info). There is a link (#3 in that grouping) that directs you to a post by alostpacket that describes, in great detail, Android malware and how you can protect yourself from it. I would also bet that any serious malware developer would have developed a way to circumvent Lookout. Seeing how it's the most popular malware detection app on Android.

alostpacket won't pimp his swag but I sure will.

The crisis facing Android users when dealing with permissions is twofold - 1) how to smarten up so we know what's reasonable, and 2) what to do once we smarten up after the fact (as in, jeez, what are the apps I already installed doing?).

Clever dev that he is, he's created a tool for this and it's only a buck.

I think it's a must-have.

Safety tip and I'm not making this up, it's already been a famous case for us here on the forums - live wallpaper apps do not need access to your dialer or sms stuff.

To add to this, as well. If you choose to root (either the temp root we have now or when we get S-OFF), there are a few options of controlling your apps, too:

The first is DroidWall - http://market.android.com/details?id=com.googlecode.droidwall.free&feature=search_result

It is a firewall that denies particular apps internet access.

The second is Permissions Denied - http://market.android.com/details?id=com.stericson.permissions&feature=search_result

This app can deny apps the ability to use particular permissions. However, denying permissions may cause the app to not load at all, crash when it tries to access that permission, or cause instability. Most of the time, the app doesn't boot up and you have to figure out what works...but that's a lot of reboots.

Last is Autostarts - http://market.android.com/details?id=com.elsdoerfer.android.autostarts&feature=search_result

It allows you to tell the phone what to boot when conditions change. One, obviously, is first load. Plugging in the charger is another event. Putting the phone in a dock, etc. Very useful. Even with temp root, because there are more events than just first load. And you'd be surprised what loads in the background without your knowledge.

Again, all require root. But they have advantages.

I started using this too. So far it is the best voice to text software I've used.

So there is appshopper.com for iOS apps, but I've been wondering if there is anything like that for Android apps. There are a lot of apps I'd like to get, but I'd rather wait until they are on sale.

The Amazon App Store is your best bet.

Many sales hit there and every day they give away a paid app for free. I've gotten 3 keyboards and other good swag that way.

But that's only Amazon hosted apps right? I'm talking about something that covers the main market.

I used to follow an app called Apps on Sale for this, but the percentage of interesting apps to junk was low and it updates rarely anymore. Not installed on my 3D.

I see an app called app hunter by Echo Lu that claims to do this, but I have not tried it myself.
