My Eris has been a good little phone.:) It isn't a power house like an X or an Inc however it does everthing I want it to. I've read negitive things in some posts about the little phone.:( That's why I wanted to give a Shout Out to the little phone and to the fine folks in this forum that's always there to lend a hand to people in need no matter how noob the questions can be.:) ...............just saying
 
amen! i agree with all the above. ive got a droid 1,and my contract is up. but i still bought myself a used eris to play with :p

i think its a great lil phone for being one of the earliest androids :cool:

and there is tons of good info here,and great members who continue to answer questions that have been asked over and over.they go above and beyond to help folks have the phone they want. *thumbs up* :D
 
My contract won't be up until april.:( In a way it's a good thing because I like to get the newest thing out.:o So that being said I want to see the next generation droids.:) I'll keep my little eris to experiment with.
 
pssh the golden days of this phone are far from over what with gingerbread and all. Obviously the original droids will still outlast us I think, but what I tell people is that with a little tweaking and patience, I get to skip a generation of phones and save money.

just think of everyone who's buying a galaxy right now with 4g right around the corner...
 
This is my first post here because this thread spoke to me. I got my Eris the other day from someone off Craig's List (clean esn & all that, so no worries) because I had to turn my original Droid in. I'm used to having more power and more rom options because of using the Droid, so I started to doubt my purchase, but figured that I am in a desperate situation and need a cheap smartphone with the ability to run Android and check emails and text. It reminds me a lot of my old G1.

To say the least, this is a good phone for the time it was made for. It is a couple of years old and definitely not a powerhouse. Despite that, I have grown to like the phone a lot, especially because of the Send and End buttons and the LED/Trackball lights. Haha. I like how its light-weight but feels like it's not going to break.

I would pass up an amazing phone if it didn't have an LED notification. or some indication of what is happening (Email, text, etc) without turning the screen on to check. That is just something every phone should have!

I have mine rooted, with CELB Froyo, overclocked to 787 and it's doing just fine. Everything is snappy enough and it's been a good buy so far. Still have a year til upgrade time, so we'll see how it goes.. =)

Welcome to AndroidForums (and it sounds like you're already well-versed in the ways of the Eris ;)).

As someone mentioned earlier, the Eris is the "little phone that could" (and still does, for a lot of folks).

I like to hear good things about our dinosaurs. My Eris would freeze if I tried to OC anything over 720 on any rom I've been on.

I unrooted my phone yesterday so I could see what was under the hood of the "unrevoked" root installer.

In general, I'm not a big fan of running anonymous executables off the web on my machines, so I booted a Ubuntu "Live CD" distro, and ran the Unrevoked installer from that.

After I had a peek at that, I replaced the "clockwork" recovery with good ole Amon_RA, did a Nandroid restore to GSB v1.4, and then upgraded/overflashed to GSB v1.5.


One of my acquaintances bought a Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S for AT&T) in July - he gets to use that big, colorful AMOLED screen to stare at an Eclair (2.1) distro. LOL.

PS Unrevoked 3.21 (for the Eris) uses an admixture of Leak-V1 (kernel) + ClockworkMod v2.5.0.1 and some other binaries that koush apparently built (/init, /sbin/adbd, /sbin/recovery, and a busybox)

We all also owe a great debt of gratitude to the awesome ROM devs who made all of this possible: CPCookieMan, Conap, ECLIPS3, erisuser1, Framework, GrdLock, hakkeshou, Ivan (yay!), Jamezelle, jcase, Skiyou, Spencer Moore, tazzpatriot, T2noob, TenzoMonk, TopazAaron, hoban_eris, rigamrts, vinyfreak89, workshed, zach.xtr, punk.kaos...and I'm sure I missed many others (apologies).

Without the early ROMs and especially the more recent ones, there'd be an awful more unhappy Eris users than there are now.

And another 'hats off' to those folks who spend so much time and energy answering questions. EU1, Scary and Doogald all come instantly to mind. Lots/most folks help to some degree or another, you gents go above and beyond.
 
what's funny is the phones not that old. it was released 1yr and 3 months ago which a year ago was not considered particularly old for a phones life cycle until AFTER android really started taking off (and still isn't for dumb phones...I know several people still using Razors). Nobody with yr old iphones or blackberry's are constantly temped with new higher powered releases every 3 months like android. I bought my phone in march and no less than a month later comes droid incredible and new ish or ish around the corner has been coming constantly. I really hope after the thunderbolt, bionic and whatever samsung is likely to come with they slow the hell down adding and releasing G's, cores and Mhz OR these next phones are so fantastic they become like pc's where faster and more capable means nothing to 98% of the users (me) who would have been perfectly happy with a celeron laptop instead of the mainframe they bought.

It's true that the Eris was released in November 2009, but the Eris has basically the same hardware (it adds a proximity sensor) as the Hero, which was released in July 2009. And it's really not that much different from the original Magic, which came out in February 2009. So, actually the technology is about two years old right now, and almost a year old when a lot of people were buying it.

I came to the Eris from a dumbphone about a month ago, and now that I have rooted I am extremely happy with this phone, and aside from a little speed I don't see any reason to upgrade. And my contract isn't up until July 2012, and I have no problem whatsoever using this little awesome phone until then. I might even use it after then if there is nothing comparable on the market at that time. I sure hope HTC continues to keep at least one new current model Android phone which is about the same size as the Eris or maybe the Incredible. I don't want to carry a mini-tablet around with me everywhere I go.

Hey Hoto, you are no slouch yourself! You've been a constant, helpful presence around these parts and have helped-out not just the Eris folks, but lots and lots of people with different phones. Kudos and appreciation to you too, mate! :)
 
My wife and I both love our little Eris's, too. They've been good to us.

Unfortunately, she dropped hers earlier in the week and shattered about a third of the screen. It still works. We just had to put a screen protector over it so the shards wouldn't fall out.

I agree with everything you posted except this part, the Eris is only a little over a year old, a lot of us got it less than a year ago. Sadly it was outdated when it came out, but the form factor, looks and a lack of other options made it popular.

As far as durability goes, I have dropped mine a couple times,(once flashing a ROM no doubt) and it does not have a scratch on it. The back comes off and the battery pops out but that is it. I credit the rubbery finish and my screen protector for the invincibility of this phone.

I showed another eris user my rooted phone, and she was "Do that to my phone" so i rooted it and another friend mentioned it voiding your warranty, and she got all sad.."what did you do to my phone?"i have insurance..blah blah blah. whatever. i made it better and she still has a warranty in my eyes. you only need to trade in a phone thats broken. you cant tell if a phone is rooted if it is broken.
