Root My little Eris

I certainly am not one of them :D.

I still read / follow the Eris forums with great interest (and still have and use my Eris, of course (mostly for development work)). With the right ROM and the right setup, its still a very good phone. You do see the differences when using the devices side-by-side, but if you compare an un-rooted Eris with a rooted one running a good, overclocked ROM (like many, many folks still do), you'll find that you've got a solid phone in a very compact form factor.

As far as durability goes, I have dropped mine a couple times,(once flashing a ROM no doubt) and it does not have a scratch on it. The back comes off and the battery pops out but that is it. I credit the rubbery finish and my screen protector for the invincibility of this phone.

Being that I'm in the construction biz my phone has been introduced to ground on more than one occasion.:eek: I have always had a silicone cover on it and no screen cover and notta scratch.:D
 
What the heck, I can keep a thread alive... I treat my stuff pretty well so I have no "survival" stories of my own but my other half is a different story. We got the the Eris when the $99 BOGO offer first came around and so far I've witnessed her drop hers in 2 puddles, drop it on the sidewalk/street an untold number of times (one time even stepping on while attempting to retrieve it), and seen her pull it out of the washing machine TWICE. And these are only the abuses I've been present to watch.
So far that lil' bugger just keeps chugging along. I'd taken to calling hers R2-D2, long before the Moto D2 ever came out, and think that it's the Eris that should have received an upgraded Special Edition for it's continuous faithful service and small-in-stature form factor.
As I'm a tinkerer I tend to make mine a little buggy and have appropriately named it Twiki of Buck Rogers fame.
have I mentioned it's been a long boring day at work???
 
I just wanted to add that in the time that I have had my eris I have dropped mine probably at least once a day if not more and it still keeps on going.

My fiance dropped his in the toilet and his still is going strong as well.

Our phones as the OP said may not be the most powerful or the coolest new thing out but they are a phone that is awesome even better rooted and now has gingerbread to boot. Were loving gsb atm.

We get an upgrade in July and to be honest at this point it could be never because we love our eris'
 
Me and my Eris have had our ups and downs. I'm on my third one now (first one had a bad radio, second one had bad trackball). Ive rooted and unrooted, checked out lots of ROMs, took a peek at the Froyo and went back to XTR. I still think this is a very good smartphone for me. I want to make calls that don't go away, get my work email, send txt msgs, read some news and sports scores, and search maps for stuff and directions. I don't have a lot of apps. It does what I need it to do.
Sometimes I can't wait to get a new phone and I look at the other phone forums and I can say that this forum is the best. Lots of great people who help and lots of info to help yourself.
I think we all remember the first time we rooted and wondered what would happen; brick or gem? Mine has always been a gem.
I will get a 4G phone one day. Until then, I'll hang out with my Eris and have some fun and enjoy a good forum right here.

I agree... I was excited by the latest technology, but I started to ask myself why? What is it that the new phones do that the Eris doesn't already do? Is it that the screens move a little faster? Whoopty frickin doo.... lol

On some of them, Netflix? But how many of us will be watching Netflix on our phones on a regular basis? Who has this kind of time on their hands? On some of them, video games? Is that really what we need our phones for either? Or live wallpapers... Oh yeah, now there's a must-have. Or maybe it's the dual core, doubles as a slow laptop deal? After you spend $500, you could have bought a cheap laptop that was 1000x more powerful and did far more.

The only thing I see coming up that the Eris doesn't do and may become a must-have is 4g, but I'm not particularly in love with the idea of increasing my monthly bill on what those cash sucking vampires call "luxury" either.

The Eris is the "smart"-phone that is missing some of the toys. It has a seriously rugged display, it's built solid, and does what it needs to do.

It's a little slow in some areas, but it gets the job done. It is kind of like the old pick up truck you just never bother trading in because it still serves it's purpose for what you need.
 
I will chime in on this thread.

I recently received an Eris from an OUTSTANDING member of this community and loved it. I still love it. About 2 weeks later, a friend gave me his OG droid to use as well. I went between the 2 for weeks and I can safely say, using xtrSense on my Eris was able to beat whatever ROM i dropped on the droid in battery life and stability. Add to that my 710 speed on the Eris vs the 800 I used on the droid and it was a tie between app access. I truly enjoy Sense because in all honesty, why shouldn't interacting with a device you see all day be pleasurable?

The Eris also has form factor going for it. I see people all the time pull out there 4" screen devices and I wonder - when did cell phones stop being portable? even the OG Droid is a brick. The Eris is a perfect size and does the limited things I want to do perfectly. I will use it for the foreseeable future simply because all the new devices are so clunky.

So, is someone wants a solid, small device to accomplish the same things as the bigger behemoths... get an Eris, drop xtrSense on it, set it to 710/122 and use wifi when you can...

You'll get great size, fantastic battery life and an overall excellent experience from a long forgotten about device.
