Root need help-noob!

Hello everyone, i am brand new to this forum and new to rooting. and i just need a couple ?s answered.

1. i read some where that i should have a stock sense rom flashed on my phone to update my phone radio. What and where can i get the radio and how do i flash a sense rom or any rom really. I am using rom manager and at the moment i am using CM7, but again i read some where i shouldnt use rom manger.

2. I also use kernel manager, and have tiamet 4.0.4, is that a good combo with cm7, im using 7.0.2 ( i would also like to learn how to flash kernels) also read you shouldnt use kernel manager

3. I read that Viper scripts makes the battery better, but after you flash it do you just let be on your phone and do noting? (still dont no how to flash lol)

and i think thats it lol, thanks to anyone who replies back. and yes i am a huge noob lol, i went from iphone to evo and iphone isnt as complicated, however still love my evo <3

first off welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1.you do not have to be on a sense rom to update your radios. you can just flash in recovery. and yes i would not recommend that you use rom manager. it tends to be very buggy.

2.i also would not recommend kernel manager. it is much easier to do everything manually. and yes i love the combo of cm7 and tiamat. i have great battery life with that combo.

3.i have not tried the viper scipt yet. it is something on my to do list. but it looks like you have to use terminal emulator to setup your profiles.

hope that helps. if you need to help flashing a rom let us know.

+1 I was in a situation recently where my phone would not boot to the home screen, so I couldn't use ROM Manager. It's a very good thing that I learned how to do things in recovery or I'd have been stuck.

which clockwork mod recovery do you have? to find out lets get there and see. power off then press and hold down power+vol down. this will get you to the hboot screen. select recovery. what version does it say?

also there is a gps fix as well. you need to go to a sense rom to get it working. so first things first.

see that where it gets me, when they say put the rom in my sd card(zip file right?) but into what folder? and also how do i know which nano backup do i use(i got like three) ;O. lol ugh thanks guys for putting up with me lol 101 questions !:)

ok so with clockwork mod 3.0.0.5 uses only a script called edify, while most roms use amend scripting. there are currently two recoveries that can do both and that is clockwork mod 2.6 or amon ra 2.3(the one i recommend). so if you want to switch here are the steps:
1.download this:PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
2.rename the file so that it is named PC36IMG. just erase the "_RA_2.3" part of the name. do not add a .zip if you using windows as windows hides extensions.
3.transfer the file to the root of the sd card (no folders)
4.power off the press and hold power+vol down
5, this will get you to the hboot and should automatiaclly scan for the file
6. if it is named correctly it will ask you to update, select yes
7.select no to not reboot
8. now you have amon ra as your recovery
9.select restore/backup and make a nandroid backup now. remember nandroids are your friend.

once all this is done then we can talk about flashing roms

+1 on AmonRa's 2.3! IMHO, there is no better recovery to work with. :)

HEY IT SAY WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BACKUP? DO I PICK ALL? sorry all caps

Not really lol. Recovery and google are useless really. Ext is only good if you have one though it may skip if you don't...secure only if you have apps moved to sd card....you can pick everything else....

ok nice!
ok so these are the steps that i do when flashing roms:
1.download the rom of your choice
2.transfer the rom over to the sd card(if you are still in recovery there is a usm-ms toggle option that you can use to transfer your file in recovery).
3.go into recovery
4.make nandroid backup(you already did this so skip this step) just remeber nandroids are your friend.
5.wipe system, cache and dalvik cache
6.i also use this Calkulin's_FORMAT_ALL.zip. it just wipes some more. i like my new rom to have a clean environment.
7.flash .zip from sd card and select your rom
8. let it do its thing and then reboot

the first boot will take a while as it has to build dalvik cache up. so be patient.
hope that helps. any more questions you know what to do.
8.

yeah just select flash .zip from sd card and select caulkin's format all to get it to wipe. and as for kernels just flash it like you would a rom. only difference is that you only wipe cache and dalvik cache. and flash rom first then a custom kernel if you want.

okay cool my last question i dont have to go into a stock kernel to flash , i can flash another rom that is ASOP without changing the tiamet kernel right. and i think i should be good after this ? is answered thanks to everyone who helped me out

anytime you flash a rom it comes with a stock kernel of sorts. if you want to use atiamat kernel then you have to flash it again after you flash a rom. i would not do it in the same recovery session. i would flash a rom, boot up make sure everything is working then flash a kernel.
