Root Need help unrooting evo 4g

81sc

Newbie
I am following the directions for unrooting with Hboot 2.18 and S-ON. I am not getting the command prompt image at the end. I get the #, but when I finish putting in all the lines I just get another #. It doesn't show like the guide says it should look.

I think the problem is I can't turn off fastboot? I don't see it in settings/applications on my phone.

Thoughts?

Welcome 81sc!
First question because I am curious...why unroot?

When you enter "adb shell" you get the "#".
Then when you enter:
Code:
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
you still get the "#" ?

Hi Mikestony,

Thanks for the help. I've had some trouble with 4G and my wifi turning on randomly, among some other things, and I guess I was expecting a bigger performance increase than what I saw.

Anyway, yes, I get a # after each command line that I type in.

okee dokee.
Just know, that being rooted, we can better fix things like that with the custom recovery, or another rom etc.

If you desire to unroot, that is fine and we can continue:)

Let me ask you then just to be sure:
1. usb debugging is checked.
2. you are opening the command window at the Android Folder (which should have the 3 files mentioned in the guide)
3. you have extracted and moved the flash_image and the mtd-eng files on to the sd card.
4. your phone is set to charge only.

What rom are you on?--nevermind...lol...saw your edit...:p
Sorry for all the questions...just need to know exactly where you are at. :)

Yep, I've done everything on your list. When I restart it runs through and ends on "parsing pc36img.zip" but I don't get a yes/no update question.

o.k...we need not run the PC36IMG file yet until all the other steps are done.
So don't worry about that yet.
And the flash_image and the mtd-eng files are on the root of the sd card? Not in any folders correct?
When you type the command:

cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image

you need to type it exactly as shown. Copy and paste would be the best way to do that.

And you have htc sync installed?
And the latest Java installed?

Make sure nothing else is trying to communicate with your device either.

If it still fails, reboot the computer and try it again.

Just to make sure, I put the flash_image and the mtd-eng files in the sdcard folder or with the main group of folders when my phone is connected via usb?

The extracted files yes...in other words after downloading those 2 files, extract them and then place the extracted files on the sd card. Just plunk them in there. With the other folders, yes, but not in them.:)

I've got HTC Sync version 3.3.21 and I updated Java. Now I've got the phone showing locked (oow) but nothing is changed (still have warm 2.2 running)

wow warm 2.2.....that is super old. i have not been on it since i first rooted the phone......you know we do have gingerbread and ics and jellybean now for the rooted og evo, right?

well the next thing you will need to do is run a ruu that matches your radio, if you want to be completely unrooted......though i do not see why you still want to unroot as there are many ways to troubleshoot and fix your issues. plus rooting allows better battery and performance then an og evo that is not rooted.......but i guess that is too late now....LOL

ok good. so all the commands went well?

I think so. Haha. I just left the command window open and went ahead. I think the issue was renaming the PC36img file. When I tried the steps again it changed to a file instead of looking like the winzip file. What's next?

LOL, yeah, I rooted it like a year ago and haven't touched it. I don't plan on having the phone too much longer and I guess I'd just rather be back to vanilla.

Oh, crap, haha. Well, it's showing as locked now, so do I need to go back and do the steps again with it zipped, or can I move on to the RUU file?

what PC36IMG file are you using? what guide are you using? and what step are you on? the ruu can be in the form of PC36IMG or .exe file so we need to know what the PC36IMG file you are using.

I'm using the guide you and Mikestony put together. I'm on the Method 2 guide to unroot. I have been on step 1, trying to get the command lines to work. Somehow my phone shows locked (oow) now, though. I think maybe I used a wrong PC36IMG file. I'm going to redownload the one from the guide (this one: PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.67.651.3). I'll be offline for a bit, but back around 9 or so, so I'll give an update then.

ok cool beans we will be here if you need us.....keep us posted.

I'm a little corn-fused here...
All the command prompts in the command window went fine.
Did the PC36IMG file install succeed? As in, it asked you to update while in bootloader? Or did it fail?

The ruu, which is in PC36IMG.zip form, the one you are downloading, should be the next step to do after all the command window stuff...follow?

I know you said you were gonna be offline for a bit, but just wondering as you said your bootloader was locked.

Hey Mikestony- I'm back. So...I didn't see that it asked to do an update. I tried doing the PC36IMG again, but no luck. The guide says it should say locked (oow) and hboot 2.18, which I now have. Could it be that I'm unrooted, but the phone is still loading the warm 2.2 screen and the rom somehow? It doesn't seem like the phone recognizes the PCIMG file.

I don't know what happened as far as you being locked oow.
I would try to run the PC36IMG file again.
Just make sure you rename it correctly..do not add an extra .zip to the end.
And, make sure you don't put it in any folder on the sd card.
What size sd card do you have?

Yeah, not sure how it changed from unlocked to locked. I deleted all the text so just PC36IMG was visible. It goes in the "sdcard" folder, right, just not in any folder inside that one?
