Root Need help unrooting

do you have a card reader?
ok so if you do have a card reader you need two things the s-on tool and the appropiate PC36IMG file that matches your hboot. both of which you can get from the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html guide in the urooting sections. via the card reader you can get those files onto the sd card. follow the instructions in the dummies guide to unroot. if you have any questions please feel free to ask.
the main thing is that you need the s-on tool and the PC36IMG files on your sd card. you can try and download them straight to your phone. the main issue would be the PC36IMG file. the steps are to flash the s-on tool then the PC36IMG file.
most roms have the ability to boot into recovery without pressing and holding down the power+vol down. otherwise what will happen if you go to recovery manually, then hboot will flash the PC36IMG file first and it will mess up the process. so be aware of that.

If he is downloading them both to the phone instead of transferring from his pc, he can always tell it to not update when it finds the PC36IMG file if he has to go through hboot to get to recovery. He will need to move them from the download file folder to the root of the card though after they are downloaded.
ahh yeah good point. i briefly forgot about selecting no to update.
Ok, so if I go this route and download the 2 files onto my sd card, then swap my sd card into my brothers phone, once i flash the programs onto his phone and unroot it, will putting his old sd card back into his phone screw up the process of unrooting? Will i need to do anything with his sd card before i put it back in his phone?
nope, should be ok just delete those files after unrooting. having those files will not do anything by themselves.

ocnbrz' advice is solid. I lost the USB on my launch day Evo earlier this week. I needed to get the phone unrooted in order to get it replaced. I transferred in two steps with a reader; first copied over the s-on tool, flashed it a few times (still showed s-off), then copied PC36IMG and flashed from HBoot. HBoot reported s-on after after that.
Based on my experience, unrooting is a wise move, but be sure to get rid of any root/unroot files, ROMs, flashable zips, root app folders, etc.
Took it to a Sprint store, the tech didn't check for root, but he didn't have any Evos in stock. He found one at a store nearby, and that tech did look for root.
I was careful to swap to an old card with no traces of root apps or files, but I suppose a nearly year old Evo with bone stock screens and zero user installed apps is kind of a dead giveaway in and of itself.

I cant thank you enough for your help ocnbrze. I got the phone unrooted last night without any issues. I'm pretty sure i wiped the sd card of any root files as well. I hope anyways. Thanks again for the help!
no worries i'm just glad you got it unrooted. now return it and get a new (refurbished) evo and get it rooted asap
