Root need help!

Newbie
Hi, I'm new to this forum and also to rooting. I did the dev method and my phone is unlocked and I was wondering if that's considered rooted. I haven't tried installing any roms because I don't know if I'm suppose to do the backup first and do i back it up on my sdcard. Any help would be appreciated Ty.

welcome to the forums!!!!!
well the definition of rooting has changed a little now that the phone manufacturers are now locking the bootloaders. basically in the past you needed to get the phone's security turned off (s-off) and then flash the superuser app to gain access to the system partitions. but now that htc has locked down the bootloader all known exploits are now closed. but what htc has done was provide us with a backdoor so to speak to allow us to unlock the bootloader so that we can flash a custom recovery and flash the su app so that we can gain access.

so in all intensive purposes if you are unlocked and have a recovery and have either flashed the su file or flash a custom rom, you are now considered rooted. so now go and get your flash on:D:D

hope that helps out.

When i the nandroid backup, what excatly do i back up? boot, system, data? Can i flash any rom using dev or are there only certain kinds for it?

Leave the first 3 checked, then check wimax and SD-ext if you have your card partitioned

i do the first three and then wimax. i would keep one or two with wimax backed up and saved on your computer and even on the cloud. after that the first three is really all you need as wimax and others will just make the nandroid backup that much bigger on your card.

and you can flash whatever you want as long as it is for the evo. just make sure to read the op of anything you are going to flash.

Hey is super user the screen after you click on recovery where you can flash and do the backup or is it a whole other thing? And when I download a Rom what excatly do I throw in the sdcard? There is a couple things in there and not sure what to put in SD. Thanx for the help.

no the superuser (su) is what gives permission to gain access to the system partitions. it is in the form of an app found in your app drawer. the stock rom will not have this. you will need to flash it in recovery. or you can flash a custom rom. all custom roms will have the su cooked in.

when flashing roms and most other files, do not unzip them. leave it unzipped and put it on the sd card.

Oh, haha I open and put it on sdcard. So when I flash a rom and my phone by any chance messes up like bricks can I do backup recovery? Sorry to ask so much its just this is a first and I'm paranoid of bricking phone.

well if your phone is bricked then you will not be able to do anything. it will literally become a brick which is useless. however, bricking your phone is really hard to do. as long as you have recovery all is not lost.

so if something does go wrong and you can get to recovery then yes you can restore a nandroid backup and all will be good.

and do not be sorry. the only time you should be sorry is the one time you did not ask any questions at all. please feel free to ask as many questions as you like. this is a forum and this is what AF was designed for. so please ask away.

Thanx, do i get those ad xda or is there a link here? currently installing express 3.1. Man rooting is so sweet.
Click on the rom sticky and go to roms and kernels. There u will find all the more up to date roms. If you get them anywhere else make sure they are for the evo4g. flashing a rom for another device can do bad things to your evo.

Sense 3.5 ROMS have a few issues. I would stay away from anything above sense 3.0 if you want a stable ROM
(no 4g, internal space issues, missing text messages, ect)

Yeah, I have sense 3.0 a lil buggy and my hotspot boots me off. Might try another rom but I also like this one. Also I don't think hotspot works with 4G. Am I suppose to get another kernel or is stock ok?

Also downloaded myns worm 2.2 so might check it out. Oh i thought we got free apps while rooted. Anyone know of any signal boosters?

Due to the way the sprint hotspot was hacked, 4g doesnt work with it. There are apps that work with 4g tethering if you can find where to get them (not android market)

Signal boosters=upgrading your radios basically.

Myns warm 2.2 is a froyo ROM, so its missing some major things from gingerbread. Still a great ROM, but a little outdated now.

Ok, do you by any chance what radios work with sense 3.0 or what kernels?

Kernels are dependent on what build of android you are on, ie: Froyo / Gingerbread / Ice Cream Sandwich, etc. Also under each of those desserts there are two categories: Sense kernels, work with roms based on htc Sense; then AOSP (Android Open Source Project) kernels that are for roms based off of the google source code.

If you are running a Sense 3.0 rom you need a sense kernel base off of Gingerbread. :)

You can find these kernels here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

Scroll down to the second post and in there you need to find the Gingerbread sense kernels. I'll recommend the Freedom kernels. Try the Agressive Freedom kernel first and see how it "feels" on your phone. Give it a day or two before you move on. ;)

Your radios should be updated to the latest version or close. If you power down then hold the volume down and power buttons, this brings up your hboot. Your "baseband" is your radio version. the latest is version: 2.15.00.12.19.
The new raduios can be found in the link I posted above. :)

sense kernels will work with sense Roms. Id suggest anthrax or aggressive freedom universal. If you need download links I can help, but I'm posting from my phone now.

Any radios will work for any Rom. Flash the latest. But never pull your battery during a radio flash

You still do not want to take an HTC software update. matter of fact, it would be good to uncheck it.

If Prl and profile are there, you can update them in that order. some folk get better connections that way.

I haven't messed with the firmware update.

yeah never do an ota if you are rooted. it could make a mess out of your phone. all you need to do is flash a rom that has the ota cooked in. and you really do not have to be updated at all. the last few ota's we had most of the devs had fixed anyways with ciq and such.
