Needing to vent

I also have a verion 003 that is new (got it just over a month ago). No strips where anyone is noting there "should" be. I am thinking some of the reps are misinformed.

Here's a photo of an earlier version Evo with the moisture strip. As confirmed by many others the later Evos do not have this.

Okay, I just need to vent a bit.

I bought an HTC Evo4G phone back when it first came out. I had a helluva time getting it activated thru Sprint... because they had signed me up for a second line of service rather than as an upgrade. It took a lot of frustration and perseverance, but I got it activated and squared away.

The phone worked perfectly. I had no screen lift, no cracks in or around the powerbutton or any other problems. I loved my phone.

Then, a couple/few weeks ago, it stopped charging. I took it in to my local Sprint store and they told me it was a known issue. They said that there was a manufacturing defect where the charging port breaks away from the circuit board and that it would be covered under warranty.

My first replacement phone (from the local Sprint Store) bricked for several minutes in the store during activation. No one knew what to do, but eventually the phone started working again. Unfortunately, the phone would constantly reload the calendar and home pages and reboot by itself at random times. A new refurbished phone was ordered from the store before I left.

My second replacement phone (again from the local Sprint Store) activated in the store without problem. I took it home, noting that the tin-ear foil was noticeably crinkled. Closer inspection revealed that there were also cracks by the powerbutton, the screen was lifting, and there was light leakage. The final straw was the phone's 3G signal constantly being lost. I would have to manually deactivate the mobile network and then reactivate it again to get an internet connection.

Instead of going to the local Sprint Store, I explained my issues with Sprint Corporate. They sent me to Asurion (I had been paying for the insurance since I got the phone) and promised to reimburse me for the replacement fee.

Asurion sent me a new phone (now my third replacement/fourth total Evo). I did a much better job inspecting the phone and found that the LDI sticker (water damage indicator) that is usually found on the back bottom right corner was missing.

I immediately called Asurion. The first representative expressed dismay, confirmed that lacking that sticker automatically voided the warranty. They transferred me to their warranty division. The person there said that because it was a new phone, it wouldn't have a sticker. He said that only refurbished phones had LDI stickers. I told him that I knew that wasn't true, as my first Evo was new and had those stickers. I recorded the conversation (after notifying him that I was doing so).

Not trusting him (this is my third replacement phone and I'm definitely more wary now), I called back. Again, the first representative said that without the sticker, the warranty was voided. He also transferred me and the next representative said that now that there was a record in their database about the sticker issue on my phone, that they would honor future warranty issues with it. When I asked for an email to confirm that, he refused. I asked to be upped to a supervisor.

The supervisor was very pleasant, but did confirm that without the stickers, the warranty was voided and immediately made plans to send my fourth replacement. However, she did warn me that the phone was backordered and that I would need to send both the 3rd and 4th replacement phones back to Asurion within the next ten days or I would be charged the $500 penalty fee.

I am just so frustrated right now!

I think the Evo is a wonderfully designed phone, it is just the quality is so crappy!

Anyway, I needed to vent. Thanks everyone.

I had obnoxious issues with activating my Evo too. Then I got the dreaded power cable issue... but...

You got a replacement for the charge issue? What the f..

I had the absolute WORST nightmare dealing with that issue and spent a month using an htc Hero (likely the worst phone I have ever used) and ended up paying $85 ( $35 fee to get my phone back from htc after they told me to kick rocks and weren't going to fix it even after they SAID they would, then held my phone hostage even after I paid... then paid Asurion $100 for a refurb, but then a $50 credit from Sprint for threatening to cancel) just to get a replacement phone that still isn't working fully properly (volume buttons only work if pressed HARD).

This is the last htc phone I will ever own and likely the last android phone unless the developers manage to create something that isn't so clunky, slow and heavy on battery consumption. And don't even get me started on the sorry excuse of an App Market.

There's a lot of talk down about iPhones and iOS, but the truth is Apple is far superior in all these categories. This is coming from a guy who typically DESPISES Apple.

your statement about apple iphone being far superior in all categories is absolutely your opinion and not necessarily fact. ive had ZERO issues with my june 6th hardware version 2 evo. ZERO. no light leaks, no random reboots, no camera issues..

i understand you have had some issues with your device. very well could have been a lemon.. all man made items that are massed produced will have SOME lemons.. its fact.

i have had several HTC handsets over the last few years and all have given me 100% success. its unfortunate you have had issues however its not fair to just simply say another competitors device is far superior.... :-)

^couldn't agree more. Not to mention the fact that I have no less than 6 friends with iphone4 that have had their units replaced at least twice due to defects. One is on his 6th phone.

Its going to happen. The issues are only comounded when groups get together such as here on this forum. Easily forgotten is the simple fact thatveven as large as this evo comunity here at android forums is. ....we make up a very minuscule percentage of evo owners.

It sounds like the op had a small hiccup due to miscomunications on the other end. From what I understand he was taken care of.

Ah, I remember my Evo days....I think i had like 3 replacements within 45 days time....
Hated this phone when i had it(i like it more nowadays when i play with my friends)

But i agree for such a nice concept for a phone and with HTC reputation, the evo(at least back in June 2010) quality was just horrible so i agree with your first post, OP

So my girlfriend's evo had light leakage, not horrible, just under home and menu, but annoying. We brought it in to a sprint repair center. They said they'd replace the screen, no charge. Cool.

We come back, and they tell us the new screen still had light leakage, so they're giving us a new phone. Not exactly happy since I know its a refurb and she shouldn't have to re-download apps and set all her settings on a 2 month old phone. We take the phone, get into my garage, and this phone had WORSE light leakage.

We drive back to the store, and the manager tells us they can see the light leakage, but its not bad enough to replace or fix.. I asked her why not, considering its worse than the original phone. She refuses still, and I tell her just give us the old phone then, since it has the same problem, at least she doesn't have to re-download everything. I called sprint and they told me if a store wouldn't replace it, its because I did physical damage to it.. I told them I literally drove around the block and came back, I had the phone for 10 minutes. They just told me if the store wouldn't replace it, I'd have to call Asurion and pay my deductible, or take it up with HTC.

Get home(again), pull in the garage - the phone has absolutely NO light leakage... wtf. Under closer inspection, there's a chip where the plastic meets the glass on the bottom. I'm guessing the tech did it with a screwdriver changing the screen. Oh, and the search button is 1/10 the brightness of the rest of the buttons...

I'm about to call customer retention and ask them what they're gonna do to keep me from cancelling.

I'd just try another Sprint store myself. Most people have only good things to say about them. Sucks your experience wasn't so great.

I too went on this journey to have my phone replaced because of the same light leakage... After one replacement that had the same issue and talking to three different sprint stores I finally gave up.

I think the main problem is that the majority of the Evo's have this same problem so you might go though 10 replacements before you get one that doesn't have light leakage. I think most sprint stores realize this and thus are reluctant to replace the phone because of this problem.

At one of the sprint stores I went to, three of the employees there also had the Evo, and all 3 had the same light leakage. It was kind of hard to negotiate with them any more at that point.

My first thought too.. Luckily for me, I went to the only "official" sprint repair center, and third party won't fix sprint's mistakes.

While everything you say is true, I refuse to put up with it. Hell I could just put a black silicon case like mine and you can't see it. It will get worse over time, and it will also allow foreign particles to get into a now, non-sealed phone. Besides that though, it looks like a cheap piece of crap with light leakage, NEITHER of our phones had any light leakage the first day, my phone STILL has no light leakage, that's how you sold me the phone, that's what I'm gonna get.

I had an escalation manager tell me sprint stores aren't supposed to do screen replacements because they damage the phone too often, and they're supposed to just send it off to HTC. She also told me her phone had light leakage too, and she shipped it off to HTC, and used her old phone for 2 weeks. I told her I'm not using my old phone for 2 weeks due to manufacturer defect. I had 3 more customer service people tell me over the phone the only way to fix it was going through Asurion, and pay my 100 dollar deductible.

So after hours(literally) on the phone, I get to an escalation manager's supervisor who calls the store. They tell him all EVOs have light leakage, but he can't see it on his own EVO. I finally get transferred to his boss, who lets me know they are going to have a different refurb for me at the store.

I told him great, that would have been acceptable yesterday, but now what are you going to do for me for wasting 4 hours yesterday, 3 today, lying to me, and breaking my phone worse than when I brought it to you? He said he wasn't going to credit my account, so I asked to talk to his boss(I talked to a lot of boss's boss's bosses today), who initially told me they can't credit accounts. When I told him entry level customer support can ask their manager to credit accounts, and he is 3 levels of escalation above that manager, he kind of stuttered and then agreed to give me a 25 dollar credit.

I'm pretty sure I can get enough for the phones on ebay to cover the cancellation at this point.

I bought my evo on 1/29 I'm going to return it.

I just can't deal with battery life issues anymore. Today My phone was turned on at 7:30am. It was fully charged, It died at 12pm.

4 and 1/2 hours of battery life on a full charge is bullshit. I can't stand having to charge it almost all day to use it moderately.

That is very short battery life, obviously.

If that has been typical for you, an ongoing issue with each charging cycle, I'd suspect one of three issues: defective charger/cable, battery or device's charging circuit.

Rather than assuming it's the device, I'd start by testing the other two things by replacing them. It could very well be that your phone is not at fault at all. If that's the case, you'll see the same issues unless you replace the battery and charger/cable as well as the phone at the same time (unless they provide you with new battery and charger/cable along with the new EVO, of course ;)).

What PRI are you on? 1.90? That shit was KILLING my phone. Once I rolled back (requires root) my battery life tripled+. This was my old phone (which I gave to my girlfriend) and my new (same hardware version) Evo doesnt mind the 1.90 PRI, it seems this software can impact phones differently.

That don't sound normal ...at first my battery on my evo was poor like yours.. 5 hrs
I rooted and got a custom Rom ...
Now it us easy to go over 12 hrs with ..normal use

I dont agree with you regarding the evos quality being crap...I know about 20 evo owners (6 in my immediate family) personally and no one has had one issue with their phone. The quality I assume is different when you get into replacements.

Totally agree! We have 3 Evos in our family, 2 sons and myself, and we have been problem free. We really like the Evo.

Yep you have the right idea, just like the repair tech and manager at the sprint store. They have light leakage, but they just ignore it, so they have no problem. I imagine the cracks and dust under the screen are another easy one to ignore.

3 and "about 20" are totally statistically significant given the plethora of threads people have started here, other android forums, xda, sprint forums, htc forums, with polls usually in the range of 20-40% with light leakage out of 500+ polled.

Your EVO has no problems.

Everyone has a different idea of what exactly a "problem" is...and everyone has a differenrt level of tolerance to said problems, and the amount of effort required to get said problems rectified, relative to the severity of the problem.

Example: A few months after I bought my (release day) Hero, reports were appearing here about dust under the screen. I had none, and stated so. A few months later, perhaps at the 6 month point, I was outside in the sun using the Hero, and happened to notice some of this dust in the lower left corner. It was an "OH! This is what they are talking aout!" moment. To me this was a non-issue, to others it bothered greatly.

One more thing, if you don't read about some of the "problems" you will never know they exist, and they won't bother you. On the other hand, if you don't read, you may never know how much capability the EVO really has! Many of the issues with the EVO can be fixed by asking for help here, and/or taking the phone to a Sprint store.

I love my Evo......I have had the EVO since June and have been pleased. I noticed just months after purchasing the EVO that the phone had developed cracks around the power and volume buttons as well as dust under the screen. I decided to deal with it. I routinely clean my phone with a lightly dampened paper towel and wipe everything down.....remove the battery cover and clean away the dust and grime. I flipped the phone back over to do a proper inspection (I repair electronics for a living ) and noticed a unacceptable amount of dust.

Phone replacement......I called Sprint and did I get a run around. I spoke with CSR after CSR . I explained the story 15 times and reassured Sprint that my phone had never touched the Earth...... I pamper my electronics.....They replied with GO TO THE SPRINT STORE. The local Sprint store is 32 miles away so I jump in the Wrangler and hammered north . Ive made this trip 10 or so times because of the POS Palm Pre .(aka Hockey Puck) After getting to the store and speaking to the board tech he argued why this is normal. I replied with your right....there is a acceptable amount of wear and tear on these devices but Im only 8 month into this and according to the contract I must keep this phone for 2 years. If you think Cracks....Dust under the touchscreen....and light leakage is acceptable YOUR WRONG. He replied with I will order one and you can pick it up in ten days (back order). I have made this trip so many times I replied with NO WAY....Disregard this conversation.

I called Sprint and did they call my bluff. I actually paid my early term fee....Pulled out the old AMEX and paid the 150! Told my wife who I just purchased a EVO shift for the day prior to box that s-it up....We are heading to the Shack in the morning to return the phone. She said ok.....not 10 minutes later the phone was ringing....I look at the phone and its 888-211-4727(Sprint). I will sum this up..... New EVO is in the mail....150 early term fee is credited to the bill.....I got a 75.00 credit for whatever (inconvenience)
So we shall see.....I bet this phone will be a refurb. As far as quality idunno but In the past I have had good luck with refurb electronics. Keep you guys posted.

wow.. that is crazy..
and to pull the used car sales trick...

I would not be very happy .. and $75.. credit for trouble...
stupid!

We have 3 Evos in the family and we love the phone. Cross my fingers, but not one problem on any phone and I get 2 days minimum on one USB charge.

Ya you already said the exact same thing...

And 2 days? OK fanboi turned troll. I suppose you keep 4g on the whole time too, and actually downgraded to a smaller battery for weight savings.

Ah the story gets better..

So after the sprint store damaged my phone, lied about it, gave me a damaged refurb, lied about that, and then asked to repair the phone they already repaired, told me was unrepairable, and did damage in the process, I called sprint customer service.

I explained my story for the 400th time, and a manager told me to make a claim with asurion, have them bill the account, and sprint would deduct 100 dollars from the bill when the deductible comes through. I asked for her name and told her to email me that I wouldn't have to pay the deductible.

I never got the email, I called sprint, there are no notes in the account. I ask the 5th escalation manager I've talked to in as many days to email the lady that told me she would waive the deductible fee. He tells me he'll get back to me thursday(the call was on saturday) because he's going on vacation(again, the customer service is amazing). So today is thursday, he calls me, says she denies saying that, and they refuse to listen to recorded calls except for QA purposes... I said, well isn't this sorta one of those QA purposes, and they basically told me to kick rocks.

I've already been in talks with a lawyer, and the last time we spoke, I was under the impression that I was getting a free phone, so no money lost at that point, just time, which he said isn't enough to win a case. He told me if I paid the 100 dollar deductible after being denied warranty work, I have a case... looks like I just did that, huh?

I know the venting. I am on my third Evo and keep having memory issues. I take each back to the store and they always perform factory reset. Works great for about a month, then the memory issues kick into gear. I don't have many apps installed and always delete the updates. I move some apps to the sd card and so forth. Now looks like I will be heading back for a fourth phone in 12 months. There has to be something that I can do to stop having the memory problems. the reps always tell me that it is a problem with evo 4g... any help would be great.
