Network vision & LTE rollout

Does anyone know how the LTE is going to play out? Someone today told me that equipment changes are necessary. Which has me wondering if I would be charged extra for something I'm not gonna get in my area similar to the ever elusive 4g?

Thanks for the tidbit about the $10 smartphone fee. I didn't know that. When I got my Evo I was told that it was 4g fee by the sales person. I knew there was no 4g available in my area, but wasn't about to argue the charge as I was zoned in on my new phone... It is what it is then.

I hear you - they told me the same exact thing, so I thought, ok, I have to pay early, but we'll all get 4G.

The day they changed it over to include all smartphones, I knew two things: they found a loophole to up their prices their prices by 10 bucks and still advertise lower, and, that I might not get 4G where I live.

Honestly, while I'm excited about the LTE options, I don't live in one of the first 17 markets, so this time around, they're going to have to show me before I believe or expect anything.

Fooled me once, you know? ;)

I'm going to second that. I'm not jumping on any LTE device until Sprint proves that Network Vision has improved 3g and that there is wide coverage for LTE that actually works.

I'm not going to ride this wave. I crashed on the rocks with WIMAX

The $10 fee originally was a "4G" fee as it only applied to WiMax devices when first implemented. It was later changed (as EarlyMon pointed out) to a "smartphone fee/data fee" so they could slap it on everything. It's never bothered me, I just take it as the cost of having unlimited data.

I originally was in the wait-and-see camp, but since my area has been bumped up to the first round for LTE implementation, the temptation to upgrade this year is growing. I'll still be forced to wait a little bit due to my upgrade schedule, so I'll get the chance to see how Sprint LTE performs before I pull the trigger.

Well if there are no delays my city will get LTE between June/July and December of this year. I do remember Sprint testing 4G around July of 2010 so I didn't have to wait long for 4G.

I really do not want to rehash that $10 fee but not for nothing, if Sprint had said from the very beginning that the $10 was for Unlimited instead of 4G or for smartphone use then I am sure alot of folks would not be going gaga goo goo over its charge.

As for 800 LTE, awesome.

i agree...

but then there is the assumption that unlimited is gone.. .you are being charged $10 for the unlimited... if you dont pay then you have how much????

i personally think .. they should have just raised the based price for smartphones by $10. MOST people understand inflation and prices always goes up.

No you would have to raise the base price on smart phones by 10.00 x 24 months so 240.00 for the same revenue stream. And then (don't quote me on this but I believe) the money goes to a different spot on the P&L; Hardware versus Subscription Revenue Stream. The money is the same but it reads differently on a financial report and would show in a loss column when in Hardware.

That link that momentoid referenced is probably your best source. I've found about all the info S4GRU posts to be accurate and insightful. S4GRU also updates maps with Sprint cell towers that have got the Network Vision and LTE upgrades. Although I have agreed not to re-post the maps, I have seen them, and there are quite a few sites in the Boston area that have already been upgraded... so, I think you're probably looking good, as a Boston resident.

Are these updated maps publicly accessible? I looked around the site a bit, and couldn't find any maps showing which towers have been upgraded in the Boston area. A link to where the updated map for Boston would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

No, not publicly accessible. You'll have to become a member/sponsor to get to the maps. Just email the admin.

It will cost you more than $100 I think. Personally I think that's too much, but that's just me.

Do you all think that it would make sense to wait on an LTE phone until Network Vision has rolled out to my region? Currently, from EarlyMon's link to S4GRU looks like my region is in the Second Round Market.

My region currently have WIMAX so at least my OG Epic 4G is functional, 3G is terribly slow. I'm thinking, if I get an LTE smartphone (GNex or EVO LTE) before the rollout to my region, I would be stuck with the current 3G, and all its glory.

Thoughts?

That is really a tough call, man. I think only you can decide that. If youre in the second round, Network Vision should start by Christmas, at the latest... probably in the fall. All the good phones now are (will be) LTE, anyway.. the only high end wimax phone Sprint sells now is the Epic Touch/SGS2 and Photon. (They just EOL'd the EVO4G, EVO 3D, Nexus S, and Shift). Sprints LTE footprint will be larger then their wimax footprint by years end. I think that makes it pretty clear they are focusing on LTE.

My area is also listed in the 2nd round and I'm waiting for the network before I get a new phone/contract. My contract is through December and I will wait to see what kind of progress they have made. My OG Evo is rooted and fine with the exception of the slow to average 3G. I would LOVE to jump on a new phone but, what's the point of a high end phone that the network isn't supporting.

Well, as expected, Sprint posted a loss in their 2012 Q1 report, however, they did far better then expected.

More importantly, Network Vision (NV) appears to be moving right along! Here is a discussion over at s4gru. Click the link within the link, and scroll down, youll see a couple Network Vision slides Sprint posted... lots of progress! 600 NV sites are now live, and construction underway at 3000 sites. :)
