Network vision & LTE rollout

I'm currently on Verizon but am getting annoyed with them. They are more expensive but mostly they just don't have anything good coming out. So I'm been looking and thinking about going to Sprint. Just curious what you guys can tell me about Sprint's coverage in Metro Atlanta. If I switch it would be with the launch of the Evo 4G LTE. How is sprints service, does Atlanta really have 4G or LTE or whatever Sprint is calling it. Is it even worth switching? Thanx for your input.

By the time the EVO is launched LTE/Network Vision should be active in Atlanta so coverage and speeds should be great by then. Don't know how they are now since I don't live there hah.

I dont live in ATL but I know someone with Sprint who does, and they have no problems at all.

Here is even better news: As you may know, Sprint doing a nationwide network upgraded (known as Network Vision) that includes LTE and enhanced 3G coverage, and ATL is one of the first cities to get it, So If you're in Atlanta you're probably going to be very happy with Sprint. There are many towers in ATL that have already got the upgrades. I'd highly recommend one of Sprints new LTE phones, especially in ATL since they're getting the upgrades first.. this will allow you to take full advantage of Network Vision. Right now you have the LG Viper LTE, Galaxy Nexus LTE, and, soon, the EVO 4G LTE to choose from.

Thanks! Gives me something to look forward to when LTE goes live in Chicago...as someone else pointed out if Sprints LTE is that quick with that weak a signal it will be nothing but happy happy joy joy

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but part of the reason the speeds are so fast right now is because there are hardly any users on the network? Once the site officially goes live and there are many more users, shouldn't the speeds decrease noticeably?

It will but only to a certain degree, like the 3G network there's only so much bandwidth available per spectrum like LTE but with the combination of WiMax, 3G, and LTE the speeds SHOULD stay consitantly fast for a long time, as they add more bandwidth it allows for those speeds to be maintained with more users, so when the iDen network is shutdown that allows Sprint to repurpose that bandwidth to LTE or 3G, which they are choosing to switch to LTE

It also depneds on the kind of bandwidth they can bring to the tower itself (fiber) (copper) (microwave)56k modem <ok the last was a joke :) But most of the towers have stright T1's with microwave back up. Great for 3g not for LTE

T-1's are history. All of Sprints 38,000+ towers are being upgraded to Mircowave or Fiber back-haul with Network Vision (all but approx. 1 or 200... so over 99% of the network will be Microwave or fiber with LTE).

Here is whats been upgraded to Network Vision that we know of so far:

I can wait for Tampa my 3g is fast but 4g should be even faster than my nexus should fly away whit 4g. Lol
PS. The first two speed test were just done

Sorry for being dim here, but is that first map showing that LTE will be live in the Los Angeles area this month?

No worries.. I cant say for certain that LTE will be live in the LA area this month. But the fact that Sprint has already started upgrading the towers to Network Vision standards makes it pretty safe to say that LTE will be arriving there very soon. Once they start a particular market, expansion seems to be pretty rapid in most cases. They are upgrading towers on a daily basis.

Here is todays presentation Sprint gave on Network Vision/LTE. About a week ago, Sprint reported 600 sites have been upgraded to Network Vision and LTE... today they report over 700. Thats 100+ upgraded towers in just over 1 week.

Also, I listened to the live conference call last week with Hesse and a couple other Sprint exec's, they said they plan to double Network Vision spending next quarter.

Can someone explain what this is exactly and if this is part of the "Network Vision"?

Sprint phones get smarter about Wi-Fi, battery usage | Crave - CNET

Are the wi-fi connections from Sprint Wi-fi connections that are available or is this to connect to random open wi-fi antennas? I consider myself fairly tech savvy, but I didn't expect that there are Sprint wi-fi connections all over the place that I could connect to for free.

No, this is not part of the Network Vision upgrades. This is a new software feature on the phone that you can set up so your phone automatically switches to wifi and connects to the wifi networks you program it to. The software will connect your phone to the wifi networks you have programed it to, based on your location, automatically. That may not be the best explanation, but its certainly something along those lines. Either way, its not part of the cell network... its a phone feature.

How is that different than what phones do now with automatically connecting to remembered wifi networks once they're in range?

And to add to that, does that mean it'll eliminate the need to toggle wifi on and off, so it doesn't consume battery continually searching for the wifi signal?

unless your wifi radio has the ability to turn on automatically when in range of remembered wifi networks, then automatically turn off when you leave the area.. its far different.

Yup, I think thats the idea.. it does everything automatically based on location.. thus saving battery. "set it and forget it!"
