How do I disable the widgets that I am not using?

Also how do I clear the cache on my browser?

1) You long press on the top of the widget, and then drag it into the garbage can that will appear.

2) Open browser, click menu, click more, scroll down and click settings, scroll down to the privacy section, and you will see Clear Cache, Clear History and so on.

So clearing all the cache from the browser and deleting the history wont slow the browsing performance right?

What about clearing all the cookie data? Is that recommended?

Clearing it will improve it, the first load may be a little slower since it was all cleared but then you will notice it is better

I know I'm a noob, but just want to be clear on this before I do something wrong. :o

I don't know what browser you're using out of the box, but I recommend Opera Mini. Any browsing over 1X will be slow, but on wifi, Opera is lightning fast, so I imagine you should see the difference either way.

Also, LauncherPro made a HUGE difference with home screen navigation and app drawer navigation for me. It doesn't lag nearly as much as Canvas, although there are situations where it will lag a little bit regardless, mostly because this phone just isn't that powerful and lacks a dedicated GPU.

FYI, you will have to re-add your icons to the home screens after loading LP, but that's not a lot to ask in return for the performance increase, as in some cases it is literally exponential.

Thanks for the tip.

I may just keep my default browser until I decide to "root". Then jump into all the customization aspects once I get more comfortable with the phone.

That's a good idea Cards! I don't think Blast meant for you to get rid of your other browser/browsers. You can just download the free Opera from the market and use it when you want to.

You don't have to be rooted to do a lot of things that make your phone more fun, perform and look better. :)

I am going to download opera mini, and check it out, oh, and not sure if anyone noticed the link in my signature, but it's a Gaming forum I created a while back, it covers PS3, PS2 XBOX, PC, Wii, and so on...so if you ever get bored, come sign up and check it out :)

anyway to stop the damn phone internet from taking you to always mobile sites.....i go to walmart.com.. and it takes me to mobile.walmart.com..... its annoying....i don't want the mobile sites..i want the regular site

LOL NY!!! They need a separate browser just for mobile.

I want to say thanks again for all you fellas help. I havent been on this site less than a week and I have already got ALOT of help and tips from these forums. There is alot of helpful and friendly people here.

I look forward to getting your help when I decide to make the plunge and root. It will be VERY soon. :)

I am also new here, and just got an ascend a few weeks ago... havent really done anything to it except install a few games. I have a lot of reading to do to catch up on rooting, over-clocking, and deleting bloatware.

1 quick question tho, the free angry birds game i got is a little laggy, and i went to the "running services" screen and some "huaweionlineupdates" thing has been running ever since i activated the phone i guess. Can i just plug this into my comp and get this update quicker ?

once again thx to everyone for their hard work and helpin driodnoobs like me !

That update process is always running, by all accounts. I would hazard a guess that it's an update checker, as opposed to an actual incoming update.

As for Angry Birds, you're lucky you can play it at all. All I can get is a narrow strip of color on the right side of the screen going vertically, and everything else is just white when I try to load it. I guess identical != identical when it comes to the same make and model, eh?

ya there is a trick to get past that !! so after the screen goes black while it is loading, then finally that "narrow strip of color" will show up after a while, then u press the sleep/lock button on the side of the phone, then press it again to wake the phone up, slide ur finger across, and BAM, u will be looking at the main page of angry birds, and can start killing those ba$terd green pigs. sorry for the run-on sentence hope this helps some1..

few questions of my own...

1. i should wait for OS 2.2 before rooting

2. what will LauncherPro Plus do for me ??

Rooting is really no biggie. It's making sure you backup and uninstall or freeze your bloatware that is of the greatest importance. I don't think the 2.2 firmware upgrade is going to be a problem to those of us who are rooted. And no one knows when it is coming out.

You will be able to use a lot of apps out there that will not work on your phone until it is rooted.

Re: LauncherPro Plus - If there was only one thing I could do to my phone it would be to use LP+. It gives your phone an entirely new look....better performance and smoother scrolling as well as allowing for customization.

Hope this helps you in your decisions.

:)

Hi and Welcome to our little Funny Farum!! LOL

I think you are wise to wait until you are really familiar with your new phone before you root. One of the reasons I think some have probs after rooting is they don't know enough about the basics before they attempt it.

It sounds like most of your questions have been answered by NY and KOLIO. They are very knowledgeable so you can count on any advice they give you as being really good.

However, you will find that each of us has their 'favorite apps' and we sometimes fight over which keyboard, launcher, messaging app is best. LOL

Don't pay any attention to that, however, because I'm sure you already figured out that it's kinda like comparing chocolate ice cream to vanilla. It's just when you go off on the strawberry that you need to use caution. LOL

Chiming in with NY and KOLIO: The apps I would personally recommend that you try right away being unrooted are:

LauncherPro (it will give you the most bang for your buck - try free version first)

Cache Cleaner NG (really helps in clearing your cache and improving performance)

Juice Defender (saves battery life)

Better Keyboard (stay away from the beta or updates like Better Keyboard 7 or 8 for now)

About rooting:

You might want to hold off for a little while until the new 2.2 is out (if it every is LOL)

Again...welcome! Looking forward to your experiences.

~ Jazz

Thanks for starting this thread Cards....You're asking all the questions I've had swimming around in my head. This is my first smartphone and I've had it just a few days....been on the fence about rooting and after reading this I'm going to hold off for a while longer and install the apps above right now, and work on changing my wallpaper and desktop.
How is it that this little gadget can be so intimidating? :D

It was and is my first smartphone also...UPS dropped it off and I started the charging process. As I waited I googled "android forum" found this place...Several hours later, phone charged I instantly rooted it and removed-installed all recommended apps. I really do not know if it helped at all, I never played with my phone pre-root, lol

But It seems to run good as far as I can tell, no glitches or bugs to complain of. Just my lack of imagination to personalize it beyond adding a new wallpaper. =P

The description for Cache Cleaner NG says it's for rooted devices.....will it cause problems since I'm unrooted?

Oh ....it does say that? I thought it would work on non-rooted devices too. Don't download anything that says for rooted. It wouldn't work anyway so no need to. I'll see if I can find you a cache cleaner you can use. :)
