Root New guy

Ive read about a One Click root. whats that all about?

Do you have a link for it? Unrevoked is a "one click root" so to speak. It is by far the most complete rooting method I have found. It has issues here and there but as long as you get s-off, the rest is easy to take care of manually.

OK i just succesfully tethered my phone mobile network to my laptop at work via only htc sync...just plugged it in selected usb tether and boom internet on my laptop

I dont like one click root, i used it to try and root my gf samsung, its sooo hit or miss, everyone is plugging in and unplugging and plugging to get it to work. Some got it, i never did. I used swupgrade to flash a custom recovery to her phone using a .tar file. I really suggest unrevoked

Edit: Though that may have been more phone related than software. either way unrevoked has successfully rooted thousands and thousands of phones i would guess, Rooted mine...

I tried that too, but it pops up the username/access error on phones screen. same error as trying to use wifi w/o paying for it or having it rooted.

For what it's worth, I used Unrevoked and have not had any issues. Everything has been flawless. And if you root, you'll find that wifi tether is well down the list of cool things you can do while rooted.

I have rooted 6 or 7 Evos without a hitch. There are hiccups once in a while but for the most part it goes easy and you are done in no time. The thing is to have everything set when you do it so as to have the least amount of possible issues(Antivirus off, HTC Sync uninstalled, drivers install, etc....)

Still pdanet and easytether will work on a non-root phone. Rooting is easy, but if you only want it for a temporary fix while in the dorm i was just trying a simpler suggestion. Root is a beautiful thing and you'll love it once you do it, but if you dont want to, there were a couple options.

pdanet and easytether both use USB. Ipad doesnt have usb :(

A. that is what you get for getting an iproduct

B. They have ipod(whatever the hell connector that is)-usb connectors, I hooked my ipod up to my stereo somehow, had to have been an ipod-usb. Yes, yes it was.

I didnt think a stock evo recognized ad-hoc connections....?

The evo would only be used by the laptop as an internet connection. The ipad would have to connect wirelessly to the laptop as though connected to a wireless router and access through the laptop

so before i do anything, back up stuff on sd card i want to keep. uninstall/turn off antivirus uninstall sync. then begin

Lap top ad-hoc for ipad, they recognize ad-hoc. Evo to laptop tether...yup

Just to warn you though.....most of use started out just rooting for the free wifi......now look at us! A bunch of flashing addicts :D

I rooted for the splash screen/boot animation.... and now i need to attend meetings for those who flash too many new roms LMAO!!

a rooted evo can be made to recognize ad-hoc connections though...there is a fix on xda somewhere in development

you can backup your sdcard if you want to, but it shouldn't touch your sdcard. Everything Unrevoked is going to do is internal in the phone. Other than that, you are on the right track.

I took that as backing up stuff like his sms to his sd card...not actually backing up his sd card...?
