I am a computer dud for over 30 years but new to the Android. I have a HTC Hero and love what it can do. The OS is 2.1. Not sure how to get or upgrade to 2.2

Welcome from me as well. You will have to root your phone to be able to run 2.2 (froyo)
 
read all about rooting, and the roms. there are some great roms out there... I like the Zen Roms myself
