Reading about how terrible the stock ROM is and how good the custom ROMs are but not sure which to get. Very confusing on the slight differences...

What's your choice?

CM7 or MIUI?

Cm7 Rules and the final build of miui my isaac has titanium backup and root problems. Also miui doesn't have an app drawer by default :(. Also there are better themes for CM7, ICS is my absolute favorite :D.

miui also has an ICS theme you can get in the themes app its called "Black Ice"

Too bad there's Chinese characters all throughout it.

One of the issues I have with miui is its a translated rom from Chinese and all the themes for it have Chinese characters, also I can't use my volume keys to skip and go back to songs like in cm7.

thanks for asking Quigs10.
I'm in exactly same state like you and logged in to post the same question but I'm sorry to say this thread so far has only increased the confusion.CM7 seems nice but 3 votes for MIUI.Personally by the screenshot I'm not liking MIUI but I can understand I can throw in some themes.
Don't rely on my statement as I'm a newbie so do your study around the forums but I would prefer to go with CM7 BUT CM7 has HDMI out problem(a thread is going on by isnow who claims to be working on the same)..it's not important for me though as I may never is HDMI out..but what is really a dealbreaker for me is wifi-bluetooth issue in CM7..asI'm planning to use it along with openwatch so bluetooth needs to run most of the time and most of the time I would be using wifi..so if they don;t work copncurrently which is an issue not resolved so far in CM7...on the other side MIUI is fully working .....

ive only noticed Chinese characters on the lock screen of some of the themes so i changed the lock screen to neonbt's lock screen it looks better anyway

Edit: the way my phone is setup there is no chinese charcters anywhere and it looks like ICS

LOL, yeah, I know...it starts to get really blurry after awhile of reading about each ROM.

I didn't see where wi-fi doesn't work with CM7. How do u mean? I doubt it would be so popular if wi-fi connection didn't work. That's one main way I plan to use the phone.

This decision really comes down to personal preference. Both Cyanogenmod 7 and MIUI run off of android 2.3 and support native wireless tethering.Think of Cyanogenmod as really bare version of android 2.3 with some extra options such as the ability to choose different themes or lock screen gestures and no Bloatware.Something kind of similar to what you find on a nexus device. The best way to explain MIUI is like a mix of ios and android.I personally think MIUI has a cleaner and more refined look in exchange for some customization, but MIUI can still be customized because of the ability mix certain elements from different themes and third party launchers. So if you're looking for a ROM that offers the most amount of customization and a really bare version of android go with cm7.But if you're looking for a ROM with a simpler to use and somewhat cleaner interface I suggest going with MIUI.But it all comes down to personal preference they're both really great ROMS.

Yea with the black ice theme for me there are only chinese characters on the lockscreen too... but I still like cm7 better personally the feel of miui is nice, but its missing out on a lot of the little things that cm7 has integrated into the rom. And just now I had black ice applied to miui and it randomly rebooted then it stayed on the boot animation, but I could feel the screen, like the haptic feedback of the locckscreen... weird...

yeah i know what you mean thats why i keep nandroids of cm7 and miui that way i can switch within 5 minutes its kinda like boot manager and its like having 2 phones :D

The best way to figure out what is best for you is to try them both for atleast a day or two for
each one

NANOBACKUP

Is highly advised and recommended

I have used them both extensively, I prefer cm7
Wifi works fine in cm7, I think the combination of wifi and Bluetooth together give people
problems, but I am not sure as I don't use Bluetooth.

Both ROM's are great really, and it's fairly simple to switch between the two of them. I was mostly a CM7 user, but recently switched to MIUI to try it out. So far I'm happy with either of them, I think MIUI is easier to customize though. So far I lean towards CM7 but its only because I'm more familiar with it.

I use Black Ice 2.2 for MIUI, it has no Chinese characters.

Take a look here if you're interested.

Uncheck "Boot Animation" under the Themes component though, it's making me bootloop.

dont forget about custom stock roms guys! :D and they may only be a few now, but i assure you some should start showing up soon as cm7 and miui are slowing down and becoming equally as popular as everything else

Like others have said, try one out and then try the other. See which one you like best. I would give them each about a week to get used to, mess around with, etc. When you have tried both make a decision based on your experiences. Someone can completely hate a ROM for reasons you would love it, so it is best to find out for yourself. That being said, seeking the opinion of others doesn't hurt and can alert you to issues you might not have found yourself.

I finally jumped ship and installed my first custom rom. :) I got the lastest MIUI installed. Thanks for the MIUI Rom, isaacj87. :cheer:

very true! i like em' all :D

Heck, even after months of using this phone and flashing ROMs, I still switch back and forth among them! It may not be an easy decision!:D

MIUI uses CM7's base code, so it also has the same HDMI & bluetooth + wifi problem (and probably additional problems of its own since it's an extra layer on top)

Another Question in regards to right before I install a ROM:

Q: I now have the MT and have been messing around learning it and installing some Apps from the market, putting music on my miniSD card and setting prefenreces and such.

But, when I do begin to install the ROM, will all my apps I've already dloaded stay on my phone? Will my settings/emails/passwords ,etc. all be wiped out? Or does everything stay put and just the new ROM takes over?

any time you have to factory rest to install a rom it wipes your apps and data. to keep your apps with their data its recommended that you backup your stuff with Titanium Backup before you install a Rom and restore them after your Rom is installed

Your apps and settings are not saved. Contacts linked to your google account are.
You can back apps up with titanium backup. But it is best to start from scratch on a new ROM.

Man, did I miss the memo about ninja'ing me today. Maybe I just need to take less time between reading and responding. :)

Quigs,
also you might wanna be extra careful with contacts sometimes switching from 2.2 to 2.3 you can lose your contacts id recommend as an extra precaution that you back up your contacts to your sd card just in case

Yeah,I usually back up my contacts through the google cloud, and you dhould move your apps to your sd card before you flash the ROM
