Root New Purchase!!!!

Black Droid

Newbie
Noob here, thanks for having me! I just picked up a Dinc after trading in the D2G after a week(didn't care for it). I have already started on the right path by ordering the 2150 mAh extended battery.

I would like to get into rooting here eventually, and figured this was the best place to get advice. But before I do all that, I would like to ask you for a to-do list for my new Incredible, or as I like to call it...

MY PRECCCCCIOUSSSSSS (lol)

Any tips, tricks, suggestions for my new phone would be appreciated(battery saving tips are welcome as well). I look forward to my experience here on the forum. Thanks guys.

Welcome to the family. First thing to do is ROOT that puppy. :)

unrevoked

Second thing is backup that puppy. (NANDroid)

Third is explore the forums here and at xda. Much useful information to be had at both locations.

Enjoy.

Welcome! THIS is a site you'll want to bookmark as it's where you'll find the majority of your ROMs and Kernels. Don't forget to always, always, always make a backup before flashing anything!

So I have decided to root the phone tomorrow. Can someone link a noob guide to rooting with simple instructions. And also, which rom should I get. My main priority's are having better battery life and ridding the phone of all the useless garbage. Would like to do a custom boot animation as well

Not sure. I used the guide in the link I put up and it worked just fine.

Just finished up with the root, everything went well. The unrEVOked method kicks ass!!! Now comes the hard part....

Choosing a ROM :D

Hate to burst your bubble but the "Incredible 2" aka the Thunderbolt is taking its place in the incredible slot. Still a great phone but a smidge outdated

Why was this post necessary? Unless you care about 4g, the Incredible has 90% of the real world performance the T-Bolt will have, and for many people (myself included) is in a much better form factor. This is on par with pointing and laughing at somebody at recess for wearing last months jeans.

To the OP...I'd try it stock for a while. I personally like Sense, and there is a lot to be said for sticking with the stability of the OEM software. HTC puts way more time/effort into quality control than ANY rom cook. And most of the customization in roms is doable in stock (especially with launcher pro/adw/etc launcher alternatives). I'd play around with those and THEN decide if I want to flash something else.

Can I still install things like a custom boot animation while running the stock rom?

And also, where can I find a decent guide to installing a custom boot amimation?

Link??

If you would have looked at the link I posted you would know. :p

I agree with euph which is why I suggested the virtuous rom because it's mostly stock with just a few minor tweaks that don't really change the stability of sense.

I too just purchased a Droid Inc. on a 1 Yr. contract.

There isn't 4G in my area til' later this year and didn't want to pay and extra $100 or so for a phone that does basically the same thing as the Inc. Within 30 minutes of having the phone home, I rooted it. I'm just using stock and didn't flash a ROM. I installed Busy Box, SetCPU, Wireless Tether for Root, Cachemate, System Monitor and Titanium backup from the market. You can't overclock the kernel, but you can underclock to save battery. I set up profiles for things like temperature and sleep status.

Other ways to save battery:
Turn off Auto-Brightness and set the display at a lower but suitable level.
Change the frequency of operations such as mail downloads.
Turn off all screen animations and haptic feedback.
Turn off indicator light for all things except missed calls.
Not proven, but I turn off 3G and turn on Wifi when at home. (worked for my Eris)
Turn off auto-sync for News / Increase sync time for weather, Google, Facebook.
Periodically after heavy use I will kill off apps I'm not using with System Monitor/Panel.

I got over 15 hours of battery life yesterday with moderte use. A few phone calls and lots of tinkering.

I didn't delete the bloatware, but froze it with Titanium backup so it's there, but not recognized by the phone. Hence it doesn't show up in my app list. If an OEM update comes I can unfreeze the apps and download the update without issues.

Congrats and from a fellow Newb, welcome.:D

Don't listen to anyone telling you you're late to the party. If I had to choose again right now, I'd still pick up an Incredible (especially for the price they're selling for!). This phone is amazing and not a second outdated.

Glad you jumped into rooting early already and now looking for a ROM. This forum is a great place for help (XDA forums can sometimes be a little intimidating for some).

As for ROMs, I use Virtuous 3.2 with Lous #9 kernel. The ROM can be easily installed via ROM Manager (available in the market) and the kernel is a quick good search away. The other popular choice for those that love the stock SenseUI is Skyraider.

Hope this helps!

Why are you rebooting so much???

Neutral build - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basically, the rom I use (Cyanogenmod 7-nightlies) gets updated every day with the current version of the Source Code while in development. So I can (and do) flash the updated rom everyday (well, most days). Honestly, most users don't need to flash every update (at least at this point, since it's gotten pretty stable) and I'd advise people not to. But I like living on the point end of technology (and am very capable of troubleshooting/fixing problems that might arise).
