Root New radio release...

I see Android's released a new radio, presumably in preparation for Gingerbread's prolific release (ahem) - 5.14.05.17. I was just wondering if anyone had tried / bothered to flash, and if so any comments?

Been out a month or so now, no different to last one (same RIL apparently) - nothing to do with 2.3 AFAIK

If your on Orange the one in my sigi is supposed to be the best available, now that I can use T-Mobiles signal as well. I'm testing the .14 RIL.

Best available...? Presumably in both holding signal and battery life?

Signal is much improved as is call clarity, or at least that's what I perceive! Battery life has improved by a few hours also but Cyanogen 7 might well be responsible for that. If your going top flash it try it with and without the RIL, it would be of interest to me to see what you think.

Well I'm running 5.11 at the moment, but if I'm going to get better signal I'll certainly give this a stab. I'll let you know how things pan out.

Out of interest, should I wipe battery stats after I flash a new radio (or ROM, for that matter) to get a good idea of how the radio is going?

Hmmm.... I just flashed the radio .zip (5.10.05.30). I presume I only need to format the cache and system if I flash 5.11.05.14 RIL from your signature link above?

Also, another dumbass question: I presume the RIL runs alongside the baseband, so I'd have 5.10.05.30 as my baseband, but also flash 05.14 RIL to enhance it?

I'm testing the .14 RIL and it seems to work fine with the radio, my advice is to load up without the RIL, Nandroid BU, and then flash the RIL. That way if you have issues with it the phone is easier to restore. I'm not sure where the RIL lives it certainly doesn't live on the radio partition and I have definate issues unless I do a full wipe.

Like I say I'm still finding my feet, run the radio without the RIL for a few days is my advice, you are right in that the RIL is/should be an enhancement, its basically a driver.

Yup, good scheme. I have a very specific part of my commute where my signal always gets dropped so it'll be interesting to see how both hold up.

Remember that a RIL cant magic up a signal where there isn't one, it should allow your phone talk to the radio more productively.

This is true. However, I'm having difficulty believing that one of the signal blackspots I always find - crossing Waterloo Bridge in the very centre of London - can possibly be a real signal blackspot purely by dint of where it is! The new radio I flashed is helping strengthen signal that's there (getting 3G more now, for example) but the deadzone across the bridge is still there. We'll see if the RIL will help that. If not, I'll have to give up and admit that, yes, Orange really is that rubbish in London.

Silly question... I've downloaded and flashed the .zip, but my baseband still reads 5.10.05.30. I wiped data and dalvik cache before flashing...

I've never wiped anything before flashing a radio. I've also never flashed a RIL at all - perhaps the newly-Infernal one will know, but I think his RIL and radio have the same number anyway.

The RIL doesn't live in the radion partition, so your baseband Number wont change, and I'm pretty sure now that it wont work unless its flashed last of all, I've had a few problem with RIL's and I now realise or at least think that flashing it last solves it. I don't think clearing the Dalvik will affect your RIL in any way but if you want to clear your RIL or flash another you do need to format your system and cache, possibly more.

Hadron you seem to be right, I have changed my name. :D I'm known as InfernalByte on other sites and I used to host a website of that name but no one used to read it so I got another hobby.

Hobbit, I'm sorry I took so long to get back but I've had awful problem with my laptop, one broke the other day when I set fire to the USB port and lost a dictaphone in the process and the other one, (my trustee Linux machine) is no longer trustee. I found out today that if you spray hair product directly on to the screen it eats away at the plastic and the static build up kills the motherboard. On top of that the toaster went fffsssst for the second time this week, it popped up half way through breakfast, so I had to make do with a warm sandwich.

Does anybody know anything about Windows USB?

The RIL lives in the /system partition in folders /etc, /bin and /lib so isn't affected by the radio or wiping data/cache

Cheers guys. I've reflashed it just to make sure so it is essentially the "last thing flashed". I'm going to flash a new kernel tonight but I presume I won't have to reflash the RIL...?
