Root New radio release...

Yea don't worry about rils, I have a found a good radio/ril combo but would only recomend it to someone on Orange UK network. Rils are very odd beasts as far as I can workout, and they need particular care depending on you rom. Some roms come with a ril built in.
Perhaps my luck is in. I'm on Orange UK. :)

Yes, flashing a radio is as easy as that. Proceed with cation though, flashing a radio isn't in itself more complicated, but if the flash goes wrong there is very little that can be done to recover your phone and it may be rendered useless. You say you HAVE to flash if your sure you need to go ahead, but while roms can be flashed on a whim, only flash a radio when your sure really need to.

What exactly happens to your signal?

The phone can be sat on the coffee table in the house with 4 bars.
At some point later, I get missed call notifications and/or text messages coming in one after the other. Incoming calls have gone straight to voicemail. So the phone has lost complete signal.
When I first noticed this happening, looked at phone. And sure enough, it can swing wildly from 0 to 4 bars being registered without the phone moving. Odd.

So not sure if it is
a) phone
b) software problem
c) Orange problem.

Little random note here, ALL ROMs come with a RIL as without it the ROM won't work!! e.g. ROMs based on 2.29.405.5 have the RIL for the radio that shipped with the stock ROM

I thought the ril's that come on the rom are generic connectivity, the flashable zip ril's are more bespoke?
