Root New radio release...

Cheers guys. I've reflashed it just to make sure so it is essentially the "last thing flashed". I'm going to flash a new kernel tonight but I presume I won't have to reflash the RIL...?

You'll know that only when it stops working.

The RIL lives in the /system partition in folders /etc, /bin and /lib so isn't affected by the radio or wiping data/cache

What your saying is; a syatem format should be enough to wipe an old RIL?

If you flash a new ROM the RIL will be changed as it's part of the ROM. Look in a RIL ZIP and you'll see the files

Unless I do a series of wipes and formats I get signal drop after 3 - 5 mins and the phone never picks the signal up again. A wipe factory reset doesn't seem to be enough.

Factory reset won't change the RIL, only changing a ROM or flash it separately will do that

Don't know if I'm doing anything wrong but I have just discovered that even moving the Dalvik Cache upsets my ril. Flash everything, kernek last of all, boot up. su a2sd cachesd, nandroid back up, then flash ril. Flashing the ril before moving Dalvik makes it very unhappy indeed and it loses comms completely.

Whats the update on the Waterloo Bridge scenario Hobbit? I bought a new toaster and now I can't wait for breakfast!

I think on the whole I'm getting a stronger signal although I don't know whether this is because of the new radio (05.30) or the RIL. I think the phone has become a bit better at holding onto data signal with the new RIL but it's not a huge change either way. The Waterloo Bridge issue is still, well, an issue. It seems there's a huge signal black spot between the north side of the river on Embankment and Waterloo station where you can occasionally get a shard of signal, but it's largely a no-reception area and you can forget any data connectivity. I can only assume that this is problem with Orange (which takes the micky a bit considering a) this is in the wide open in the middle of the capital city and b) their tie-up and associated mast-sharing with T-Mob is supposed to be irradicating this very thing). Incidentally, I do seem to be getting more "missed calls" (i.e. phone not ringing, just getting voicemails left and according to the caller the call going straight through to V/M even though I apparently have full signal) but again I don't know if this is a problem with my phone or an Orange thing.

Regarding the RIL, is there any way of interrogating the phone to see if the RIL has been successfully installed or do you just have to assume that no installation errors = a good install? I know you can't see it in the standard settings as the baseband info doesn't show any additional info, but I was wondering if there was any second level info I could interrogate...?

actually the area where you are at is heavily congested and its very likely your network has no available slots on any of the cells in that area.
as an example canary wharf and citigroup buildings have bought their own cell sites and specific boosters for o2 so they can have data connectivity for blackberry's and smartphones as the area is so heavily congested there is barely any data throughput or signal due to slot availability.

smartphones caused this issue, majority of people in that area are using blackberrys and iphones and are pretty much raping any bandwidth that exists

Yup, that's the explanation one of my collegues came up with. I think that makes good sense to be honest. Given that I suffer from teh problem both between Waterloo and Embankment, and also in the West End (although that's more a call-not-connecting issue) I suspect Orange simply don't have sufficient capacity in The Village to deal with demand. It's bloody annoying but there you go.

I don't know of anyway to check that a ril is installed properly, all I do know is what I have already said in #30.

I live in a semi rural area, and I'm pretty sure that around here the only black spotty issues are with the network or the Welsh topography. I'm also pretty confident that the improved signal and data is not placebo effect, and my battery, with lite to medium use lasts me 24 hours, with lite use well over 36 hours but Cyanogen 7 has a lot to do with that. On Saturday for instance I made one 25 minuite call, about 10 minuits browsing and 15 or so texts, after 24 hours I still had 30% battery left when I put it on charge. #21 nightly has a hell of a lag at times over #14 but I I guess that'll be sorted before the RC's.

I'm looking forward to going on holiday to France in June when I turn everything off and just use my Desire as a dumbphone just to see how many hours (days?) battery life I can get out of it.

Did that in France last year although the cottage we rented had wi-fi so I still got my net fix.

Even so it was still lasting 3-4 days on a charge. No calls made but an hour or so browsing a day and all the widgets/rss readers etc updating.

AND I updated to 2.2 while I was there (wasn't rooted at the time). :D

I have Set CPU 384MHz max screen off, overnight I use Airplane mode, typically in those hours I lose 3%.

3 -4 days from and unrooted device is very good I think, I needed to charge mine everyday because there'd be nothing left by morn.

grps and 3g data uses battery especially when flicking between them and changing cells

Yep. When I work from home with wifi on my battery drains at half the speed it does when in the office and that's with a strong H signal all the time.

So turning off data while driving so you can still make Bluetooth calls can save even more Batt. Is there a way to turn SMS off and still receive calls?
bluetooth is a battery drain lol

sms and calls are both gsm or 3g so no you cant, you can disable data but if you disable gsm then you wont get anything (you might aswell be in airplane mode

You could maybe block the listening service for "messaging" using autostarts in the "after startup" section. Not sure it would have any positive affect though. Or what about freezing "messaging" via titanium?

On the old GSM's (when GPRS was the biggest thing since the fall of Rome) you could block SMS vby covering one of the 6 contact pads on the SIM, I cant remember which one and I don't know how it would affect todays data.

But the app listening for incoming sms will also be taking up power. If you stop the app, you stop both

I would imagine its quite a drain too, bein push. Might try that. I switched data traffic off last night on my way down the M6, like Rastaman said. There was no moon, but plenty of traffic cones by J10, didnt notice any change in battery life.

Its interestin that when my phone is off, because there is still a resistance accross the battery, it takes up just as much power as it does in Airplane mode.

Hi
Can I ask you guys a question regarding radios please?
I'm new to all this modding stuff but I've rooted and flashed the LeeDroid 2.3d ROM.
I'm still on the stock Radio - Baseband version = 32.44.32U_5.09.05.30_2

I have an issue with my GSM Desire which is nothing to do with the root mods as it occurred before I modded the phone - the signal can go from full to nothing even without the phone moving! Thinking I could flash a new radio to see if that improves matters.
I have downloaded a number of radios from
android.d3xt3r01.tk/cyanogen/bravo/radios/

Trying to work out which to use. Can you suggest one?
Reading this thread, I'm confused about the RIL parts and flashing the RIL and radio separately
comments. I understand the concept of the RIL.

Can you explain if the radios I'm looking at are just the radio or radio and RIL? Has me flashing
the ROM updated the RIL and I was fortunate to have a compatible radio?

Thanks in advance.

Flashing a ROM doesn't update the RIL, The RIL provides the correct hardware drivers for the radio. Ive never flashed a RIL separately, nor do I see the need.

I recommend you just flash the radio. Which radio is best is individual. You just have to try one. Why not try the latest one (highest number / latest date)?

Yea don't worry about rils, I have a found a good radio/ril combo but would only recomend it to someone on Orange UK network. Rils are very odd beasts as far as I can workout, and they need particular care depending on you rom. Some roms come with a ril built in.
