Root New Rooter Needing Encouragment lol

Well after HTC's announcement of no GB for the desire the other day, I thought enough is enough and decided to root using unrevoked, did this easily, once I figured out to use 3.22 and not 3.32 after getting a few error messages about firmware being too new. Using the info on here and within the unlockr website

Didnt have time to go any further so left it at that and went to bed, wake up to find HTC have backtracked on what they said, make the bar stewards are at it just to get me lol

1. Now do I proceed further ??
2. Can I download their OTA update with where I am at and if I did, would it work or would bad things happen ??

Now if I were to proceed, I am assuming I do the following as you are saying not to use ROM Manager :

1. Back up my apps (titanium back up ... do I need pro version or does free do the job ?)
2. Take a custom recovery from the bootloader menu
3. Take a deep breath
4. Pick the rom I want & download it to the SD card
5. Remember to breath
6. Pick rom from bootloader menu & flash away.

7. Is there anything Im missing ?
8. Do I lose the phone network settings when I do this or is everything on the sim card ?

9. At what point do I work on my sd card or would I be better buying a new card for that and starting fresh (wouldnt mind buying a 16gb card now im using it more for my mp3 player etc)? if I want to use the one in the phone to partition part of it for app2sd ?

If you can help me with the first 2 questions in case I bottle it and dont proceed then help out with the others, that would be superb

Thanks in advance

ota is not an option but generally the root comminity will have a rom built of the latest ota within a day of the ota being released.

your steps are ok, you may want to backup the current rom in recovery before you do anything as while titanium backs up the apps it is not a system image. if you kill your device by accident you can restore it to its complete previously working state by using the backup you made in recovery.

with titanium only backup your 3rd party apps and data. do not backup system apps as if you restore them to a different rom its likely to cause you some serious issues and will need wiping and rebuilding.

network settings are generally wiped when you flash a new rom but depending on the network it will fill the apn settings with information. you can then delete the ones you do not use.

I personally thing rooting and romming is awesome however im not in the game of advised you whether its the right thing for you.
helping people on here has an element of responsibility and we take pride in helping people properly however you must be aware of the potential risks associated if things go wrong and be aware that its your decision and no one elses

Thanks for your help so far so good.

Yeah I realise everything is on my own back should it go wrong, I aint going to come hunting for folks should it go bad lol

Right I am doing a back-up now through the bootloader menu of where I am at present should things go pear shaped. (completed by the time I finished typing this and rebooting now)

I will try note down all my network settings before proceeding any further just in case I need them.

Titianium only back up 3rd party apps thanks for the tip. I assume there is an option for that, I havent downloaded the app yet.

Any pointers on the sd card question ?

and I guess after that its only the choice or ROM to use, dont want any sense stuff (nothing i use at present), so any tips from people what appears to be best for space & battery life ?

if you dont want any sense stuff you want to look at
Redux
Cyanogen mod 7
gingervillain
Devnul
Oxygen

I would recommend as a good start using the guides we have here to prepare your SDcard for a2sd then have a look at redux.
This will mean your app space will go further and your device will have a nice GB 2.3.3 stable rom on it.

Im using cm7 light as i prefer some of the features

Thanks for your help Rastaman - you are a star !!

spur of the moment while talking about it, just purchased a 16gb class 10 card from play lol, so that will be here next week, that will give me plenty of time to decide on rom and and then format that correctly prior to flashing and any further advise or guidance people may want to offer

Just to prepare you a little, I have a class 10 16GB too. You will find in the desire it performs no better than a class 6 card as the max a desire can handle is a class 6. Its future proof for your next device though.

to be honest thats part of the reason why i bought it, just for space and for the future, there was only

For a2sd+?

Dont go over 2GB, it can cause trouble. 512 is usually enough but not in all cases. I recommend 1GB personally.

You dont need that. I delete Launcher2 and Latin IME.

Create a flashable zip with your launcher and keyboard of choice to flash to data/app just incase you have to do a full wipe and all's good.

not everyone knows how to create a flashable zip Susan
i only learned a few weeks ago
most dont know how to sign them either

I got my rom down to 76Mb just by deleting apps via Titanium, When I get a pull I guess I'll do some more deletin'. Wallpapers are v chunky.

Perhaps you could add this to one of your guides? :p

flashable zips are easy but can be a pain if you get it wrong.
when i was learning how to do them i ended up wiping my system partition and only had init.d replaced :/

Yes indeed. In this instance they'd flash to data app.

As you know my ambition is to make the smallest gb Rom I can.

If I released a Rom, it would not include a launcher or keyboard. Many use alternative launcher and keyboard so these will take up valuable space.

I would provide launcher2 and LatinIME as data/app flashable or even in the Rom as data/app. That's just to get started so can navigate to the market, sign in and install titanium. Maybe even put titanium there too....

Just a minimal ROM sounds good.
CM7 bundles things that can be left out, like Car home, Calculator, DSP Manager, File Manager, Home Screen Tips, Magic Smoke Wallpaper, News & Weather, ROM Manager, Sound Recorder, Spare Parts, Terminal Emulator, Theme Chooser, Torch, etc...

The Rom I'm working on doesn't have much cm in it. It's heavily based on redux source which has some cm in it.

I'm not far off. Launcher2 will not run from data so will probably be go.
I'm hoping for it to come in under 65MB.

I've got it to 2.3.4 so far just got to get sd card working and WiFi never obtains an ip address

wow ive not even started looking into it yet. i just got a build environment then i got mega busy

how do you look into trying to fix those problems?
