Root New to ally

Whats up guys i'm new here just registered switch from a blackberry tour to the ally, and so far im loving it. anyway here are some questions that i have no really found the answers too with me searching these forums and some others.

1. what real benefit will be added if i decide to get the 2.2 update if it comes out?

2. should i just root and forget about the update, being that i see most of the people with rooted phones seem not really care about the update and just use velocity?

3. Is there anyway for me to unlock my phone without having to hit the end button to wake the phone up everytime?

4. If i do root is there a way for me to go back to the complete stock of the phone just like i got it day one without any problems ....in case a warranty exchange is needed?

5. I would like to know some peoples opinons on rooting in general?

Being that this is my first foray into the android world i'm still a super newb when it comes to all of this.....i have had everything from a winmo phone to a iphone and so far this has been the most enjoyable, thank you in advance for your help.

--Main thing we wont get from 2.2 is flash cause of our dated processor.

2. Tottally up to you. Most people tend to do so for a better "experience".See the velocity, raptor, and punisher threads to get an idea of what they offer. Just up to you though.

3. No idea :p

4. Yes when you flash a custom recovery after rooting. There is an backup/restore option that would allow you to create a backup of your phone. There's also a few other ways to go completely stock. Threads about that in the All Things Root Section.

5. I don't recommend someone rooting if they have no idea what it does or what its for. If you can read and use common sense while following directions and not panic if something goes wrong then rooting is a great thing! Rooting the Ally tends to give people a better "experience" espically with the custom roms.

1. 2.2 is faster
2. try Velocity, try the Update when/if it comes; then decide.
3. "No Lock" available in market.
4. yes there is. there is a whole thread about it. swc2001's option is probably the easiest.
5. I like it. But, I'm a customization whore.

1. It will be faster with jit enabled.
2. I would try the update, but if i didnt like it, i would just flash a different rom like Punisher(my personal choice), Velocity 0.4, 0.3, 0.2, and Raptor
3. There was an app that came with a rom, just dont remember the name of it, it lets you change the end button. Idk bout another way to unlock though.
4. You can find the post titled "I need a volunteer to go completely stock". If you download that and use amonra recovery to go complete stock rom. Then download the clockwork to stock recover.zip from a dif post. You can flash that from amonra, you just need to disable the signature verification.
5. Rooting made my phone a whole lot faster and save battery. I recommend rooting.
But yea, i think i left some stuff out and got stuff confused. I would w8 until a mod or som1 else who knows more to answer

In my oppinion
The most Stable is Punisher .1
and Velocity .3

All the new stuff seems a little glitchy
Lots of force closes and such.

I have 6 people in my family that have the Ally.
All of them think that Punisher .1 is the cats P.J.'s

yeah i'm leaning towards punisher......will i be able to back up my stock rom and everything on my macbook cause everything i'm seeing is for windows?

Velocity 0.4 isnt glitchy, people just dont fully read instructions on this website. If you follow the guide to any rom you will see they are all stable. Who would release a rom that isnt stable?

Root is your best friend.

grz is 100% right about this... a rom is like a patch... if you mess up the base software, the rom will get messed up as well... this shows no refection of the quality of the rom... velo 4 is solid, so is pun... either one should run well on your phone if you install it correctly.

ok so here is what i should do

z4root- to root
rom manager
flash clockworkmod recovery
reboot into recovery and install rom of my choice from their.

is that the right steps

BACKUP!

Do not flash anything till you make a backup of your working system, of your stock system - makes life oh so much easier! and helps failsafe against problems!
