Root new to rooting have a (hopefully) quick question

I am trying to root my evo 4g with hboot 2.18 without losing my apps or the app data so I can transfer them to my new galaxy s3. Kids would freak if I lost their angry birds progress. I used the non htcdev, non enrevoked3 method to get most of the way there. I have unlocked bootloader and think I got root. I flashed a rom and lost everything but had root access on apps.. So I restored my nandroid backup and got everything back, but lost root permissions when I go to titanium backup. Is there a rom I can flash that wont wipe my apps and data? What, if anything, can I do now?

Do you still have superuser? What rom did you restore back from your nandroid? A rooted rom? You may have simply lost superuser. Sorry for all the questions :)
Are you s-off or s-on?
Edit: Welcome to AF!! :) forgot to do that :p
What recovery do you have also?

Sorry for the confusion. Ill clarify. My evo was stock. I got bootloader unlocked. Loaded amin ra recovery. Did nandroid backup. Pushed a superuser zip to sd card and them opened it through recovery. Rebooted. Redownloaded titanium backup from play store and it opened fine so Im guessing the root was achieved, but I lost all my apps and data. So I restored from my nandroid back to stock I guess. Tried a different rom, same thing. So I restored from nandroid again. Thats where I am now.
Edit-thanks for the wekcome and the quick reply.

just remember that as long as you have a recovery all is not lost. like mikey is suggesting, if the nandroid backup was of your stock rom (unless you flashed the superuser file beforehand) then you will need to flash su(superuser) to get root permission.

also sometimes in tb permissions get denied (for me this sometimes happen right after i flash a rom and try to use tb). this is easily fixed by either wiping data for tb(settings>apps>tb>wipe date and cache) or by uninstalling tb and then reinstalling it.

it is super hard to get unrooted even though you get some apps saying that you do not have root. if you are unlocked and have a recovery, you can regain root by flashing the su file. and most roms will have su cooked in. so no matter what you do you can't unroot the phone that easily. mickey has written a very nice unrooting guide that goes over the steps on how to uroot. it is stickied at the top of this forum. if youread it you will see that there are a bunch of steps to unrooting the phone. so pay no head to what your phone is saying.

to sum it up to be rooted the minimum is either s-on or s-off, unlocked with recovery, and have su(superuser). if you satisfy those requirements then you are still rooted.

sorry for the long post....hope that helps the confusion.

as far as your data goes, did you do a tb backup with apps and data? have you tried to restore it?
1.maybe go back to stock(your nandroid backup),
2.flash the su file.
3.use tb to back up apps and data(make sure not to backup system apps[they are in red])
4.flash your rom of your choice
5.redownload tb and then restore apps and data
6.done!

calelam,

Apologies for the quick interruption here, but I wanted to:

1. Welcome you to the AndroidForums! :)

2. Let you know that I removed your other post regarding this in the http://androidforums.com/epic-4g-touch-all-things-root/422065-root-no-wipe-kernel-changes-now-available-here.html (let me know if that's not cool); got a kind heads-up that you were getting help over here in this thread :)

3. Let you know you are in great hands with the awesome Green guys helping you out in here.

Thanks to all and best of luck!

hey SA,
thanks for the welcome and that was completely fine. one quick question though. should the su file i put on my sd card be a .zip or .apk file. i have both. when i flashed a rom as i mentioned before, i didnt actually flash a rom i guess. i used AR recovery to open the superuser.zip file i have. thats when i gained root access for first time through tb, but i had lost all of my apps and data doing it. i redownloaded some apps to see if they would open up my existing data or start over and they had all started over when i opened them. thats when i did the nandroid restore and got back my apps and stuff but lost superuser.should i have done something different? can i use do a restore through tb even though i have never done a backup through it?

sorry for any confusion, just trying to get it right.

quick but stupid question... can i just download superuser app from play store? would that do anything?

ok guys. all i did was re flash the superuser.zip from recovery. everything is working great now. fully rooted with su and all. running tb backups now. thanks so much for everything.

As you have found out, just the SU apk from the Play Store does not give root privileges per se, you must flash the SU .zip, then the SU apk.

It was either SA or EM that put that fact in better words somewhere else but can't seem to find it:p
