Root New to rooting, need some help

I have a evo 4g that I recently disconnected service on. I am looking just to take off the sprint apps and use the phone for a tablet on wifi at home and on the go. Is it possible to root the phone with installing a custom rom? Is there an easy way to do this for someone with no experience rooting? I have read several threads about rooting but I am still a little unsure of it. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes you can certainly root it. Theres no need to put on a custom ROM but that would certainly get rid of all the bloat right away. We will need to see what your H-boot is to determine if this is going to done via the easy way or the hard way :)

Pull the battery out, put it back in
Hold power+volume down
This will bring you to H-boot. We need to know your H-boot number. It should be 2.XX

My hboot is 2.18.0001. Thankyou for that welcome! I've read a little about a cyanogen mod, is this any good?

cm7 is a great rom. it is a little out of date now. i think the consensus here is that deck's reloaded is much better. but both are aosp roms meaning that they do not have the sense overlay that most are accustomed to. it is pure android.

and with your hboot you will want to use this guide here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

Thankyou for that link, very good info! I am hoping to root next week some time, after I have read the entire steps thoroughly and have some free time on my hands. Im sure all will go well but will reply back will my newbie rooting experience.

thx ocnbrze..but i meant isn't there a specific package of different custom roms that will surpass 5.07?

not sure exactly what you mean. the latest software version that htc has put out is 5.07. i doubt that this phone will ever get any more updates.

we do have ports from other phones, however. we have ICS which the evo will never get officially. we have roms that have sense 2.1, sense 3.0 and even sense 3.5. our evos will forever be stuck with sense 1.0.

Can I root this phone without installing a custom rom? just root it to take off the sprint apps?

I'm a little new to this also, but I rooted Monday and I am using the mikG rom and I love it! It's like I have a brand new phone and I play with it like when I first got it. I'm so glad I got brave and did it all the way. Plus if I hated it I could always use the nandroid to go back to the stock setup.

I'm just trying to encourage you...It's mega cool once it's done!

rootchile- did you use the htc dev method or a different one. also, how long did the entire process take, actual rooting not any prep

Sorry for the delay...the hardest thing for me was the first part because I got confused about the opensense SDK thing on that site...Once I figured out what was going on the actual unlock was easy. 5-10 minutes

Then after downloading the necessary files along with lots more research I took the plunge...Start to finish was less than 30 minutes and I probably made it take longer than needed by double checking everything every step of the way.

Honestly, and I don't know if it is the same for others, getting past the nerves was the hardest part...mostly because I hadn't figured out all the terminology and I thought something was going to "happen". looking back it was pretty simple :smokingsomb:

one problem along the way was the:
7.right click on your android folder while holding shift and select open command window here (3rd or 4th option).

this didn't work for me...luckily I know to go to start>run and run cmd.exe to get to the command prompt then type cd c:\android (if thats where you put your folder. I would cause you don't want to type a long confusing file path.)

Just follow the steps and it will all work! also I used the PC36IMG method for recovery.

I hope I wasn't too long winded and I hope it helps!

thanx rootchile for your input. very much appreciated.

@to twoz311, the root process should take 10-15 minutes, if you know what you are doing and have the files dowloaded and setup. i would at least set aside a few hours to do this so that you can get everything setup before you actually root the phone.

and please feel free to ask any questions before or during the process.

Well, PapaSmurf will have an update to his new rom this weekend..SM9 I believe it is called now...I got my eye on that one!
I'd link it in a minute..computer is sluggish atm
I think this is it

That looks cool, but its straight android right? I am loving mikg because of what i believe to be the sense overlay...?... And for the OP, the mikg will still feel like the phone you already had but with some cool new features otherwise not available.

Sorry I will get off my soap box...I just love my phone again!

Tried rooting but didnt get too far. The htc dev site must be experiencing some difficulties, most time I couldnt get a response from the website and when I did it took forever to get to the next page. I gave up and will try again in the morning. Nothing was changed in my phone. I tried to get to the site on three different computers in my house, using about five different browsers, gotta be the site.

also when I go to the htc dev site to unlock bootloader (if the site ever works again) what should my phone be set to charge only or disk drive
