Root New to rooting, need some help

also when I go to the htc dev site to unlock bootloader (if the site ever works again) what should my phone be set to charge only or disk drive
I believe it should be in fastboot usb..(in the bootloader screen)

Edit: I just got onto the htcdev site....slow...but I got on...try it again.

I retried (at least 15 times) but couldnt get past the screen to selected my phone model for boot unlock. damn I really want to do this! I am also worried now that I will get a few steps into the process and then my browser will time out because I'm waiting so long for site to load, then what? nervous

That website stinks atm...it keeps timing out on me also.
If/when you get to the last steps and it times out, all you are doing is getting your unlock key...if you get that far....you can always go back later if it fails.

that's what I thought too. I've tried chrome, ie9, safari, opera, and Firefox, all same results, slow if it does work at all

yeah i agree with mikey. it is being pretty lame right now. my guess is that more and more people are aware of the unlocking tool provided by HTC and maybe the site is getting jammed with a lot of traffic. but who knows.

i made one backup, and copied the files to my computer, do I have to make another backup before I flash mikg3.11? I would say no right? just wanted to ask

thats what the dummies guide says to do
If you made one backup of your current setup, after getting a recovery, then no if you are going straight to flashing MIkg.
Its just safe practice before flashing anything to make a nandroid backup:)
But nandroid backups can be large and depending on your sd card size, they take up alot of space...

Much thanks to all those who helped me in this thread. I was unsure about rooting at first, thinking I would "brick" my phone. But now I am so glad I did! MikG3.11 is so awesome and my phone is MUCH faster (not to mention battery life has greatly improved). If your reading this and are unsure about weather or not to root, DO IT! As long as you follow the directions you will not ruin your phone! Thanks again everyone

if you like mikg, but you want something different then i would suggest that you try http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...eloaded-lotk-team-d-i-r-t-ver-44-mag-rls.html

it is aosp which means that it is pure android with none of the sense overlay. because the sense overlay is widespread throughout the rom, it takes up more room and slows done the rom. aosp is much smaller and faster then sense roms. they tend to give my phone better battery life due to the awesome aosp kernels.

so if you feel like you want something different then just make a nandroid backup wipe the phone and give it a try.

Well I figured I'd be mentioned by name...but you're welcome! lol j/k

I'm glad to hear it all worked out for you! I hope I helped push you over the edge. As for me...phone karma has caught up again. I had my rooted evo for 7 days...and on the 7th day it proved how delicate it is (was) and now the glass and the LCD are broken! Good thing my office owns it :D

I will switch it out for another in a bit and back to rooting I will go. Wish me luck!

okay so I'm back at it...I got to the first step and I'm stuck. I'm using the HTCdev method for version 2.3.5. hbootis 2.18.0001

in command prompt I type the fastboot oem get_identifier_token and all I get is <wating for device>

Suggestions?
