Root New to rooting

OK - Mike, square me away here - you cats are using fastboot to flash recovery, yeah?

Marko - if he says yes then do this -

  • download the recovery file to your sdk-tools folder on your Mac

  • Then the command will be -

    • ./fastboot-mac flash recovery FileNameMikeHadYouDownload
I was have him try the PC36IMG method first....I think its the easiest for now.
Thanks buddy!!

I'm following EarlyMon's guide here since it's geared toward the Mac: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/572162-how-get-full-root-mac.html#post4576355

I think (hope) I'm on the right path.

Wait wait - :)

The rest of the instructions there are for a different Evo model.

Root instructions change ever so subtly from model to model, variation to variation.

Let's go with the guide that Mike pointed you at - I will help adapt any instructions you require to your Mac as we go along.

Teamwork, yeah? :) ;)

When I restart the phone it sees the file I just put on the SD card but I can't select yes or no....it just shows up for a second that goes to the next part where "fastboot" "recovery" "clear storage" "simlock" are listed. Am I doing something wrong?

Not sure what's going on now but my phone screen is showing a little phone graphic with a red triangle/exclamation logo on it. Any ideas?

holy crap!!!!
you guys are awesome. i step away to make me some lunch and man do you guys move fast. glad to see marko here is in good hands.

edit:that means you do not have a custom recovery.

edit#2:did your phone see the PC36IMG file?

Pull the battery out, wait 60 seconds, put it back in, go back to your boot-up menu by the volume-down/power trick.

Ok, I read the steps again and again, I selected "recovery".

For these steps -

4.power off (you most likely need to uncheck fastboot. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.) then press and hold power+vol down.

5.hboot should see the file and select yes to update.
Sometimes, an HTC just won't go straight into what it has to do.

I had this exact same thing happen to me just recently.

It's not you.

Let it sit at the screen where "fastboot" "recovery" "clear storage" "simlock" are listed - for maybe almost a minute.

If it doesn't do anything, then select "fastboot" - from there, it will give you the prompts to install using the volume and power keys.

The crowd collectively holds its breath... :)

Remember - Don't Panic.

My first Evo root, back in the day, took 78 steps (yeah, I know right) - and I hit that red triangle twice.

Don't Panic. ;) :)

Let us know where things stand when you can, slow and steady win the race.
