Root NEWBIE w/evo 4g root unknown

Hi all.. I just got an EVO 4g from the pawn shop.. It seems to have been rooted, because I see the superuser in the apps.. I did a factory reset from the menu and its still there. I have no idea how or with what this was rooted.. This is my first android phone, but I have rooted several nooks, so I do understand some about rooting.. What I want to do is get this darn thing back to stock, and then root it. Main reason for rooting, is so my kids tether to their nooks and watch netflix while we are traveling and to get away from this stupid HTC Arrive WP7
.. So if someone can help me with info on getting this UNKNOWN unrooted, I would be truly greatful,:D

I am not sure why you would want to unroot and reroot it. I haven't ever unrooted, myself, actually, either.

Have you seen this guide?

I would suggest that you read in it, especially the After Root section. I would install the amon ra 2.3 recovery and the superwipe zip and then i would make a nand backup and install a new rom, MikGv3.1 for example, found here, MikG v3.1 [2/28/2012]

I think you should be good to go.

If you haven't activated it and are wanting to do that, you might be able to do it from that rom, as well. If not though, the rooted version of the current stock rom, found here, ss_stock_4.67.651.zip should work to get you activated.

Look at our roms and kernels sticky or through these threads, we have been gifted with MANY wonderful roms to choose from that would meet your needs!

I am anal and hate not knowing what was done with this phone.. I just want it stock for now, then I will call sprint up and get it switched to my account. Then I will start playing with rooting it.. I will read your info and see what I come up with.. I have looked and I have supersonic evt2-3, ship s-off, hboot 6.16*1002, radio 2.15.00.0008

yep dusty recommended the right guide for you. there is an unrooting section that has instructions on how to unroot. if you have any questions please feel free to ask.
 
Ok unrooted it.. Getting ready to do ss_stock_4.67.651.zip. Then I will call sprint and get this thing going on my account.. I will work on rooting tonight.. Thanks all.. Also, after I root it, what do I need to do to tether and sprint not know about it :)

most roms have the sprint hotspot hacked. so you just need to flash a custom rom and you are good. there is also a wireless tethering app that you can use as well.
 
Isn't that the file I gave you to flash while you were rooted. I don't see it in the unrooting guide though.

Are you following it?
 
huh funny i assumed it was because i did have a 4.67 ruu up on there. forgot i changed it. yeah if you want to use that ruu you can. but i can't vouch for the source so it really could be something else. the ruu that is in the guide is 4.54 which is the previous ota. the 4.67 ota will make it harder for you to fully root your phone, if that is what it says it is.

Dust.. Your right.. And I have not done that file yet... I followed the unrooting guide . Step 3 had/has me confused just a bit.. It says "rename the downloaded file (4.67)to PC36IMG"

I downloaded the 3 files that it said to, and renamed file #2 and #3 in the guide
to PC36IMG and ran those from card (1 at a time)

I have downloaded the file you gave me but I have not done anything with it yet..
 
use the one in the guide. it is stock just not the most current one. the 4.67 ruu will watermark your bootloader and it will make it harder to fully root your phone. and you will need to use another guide to re-root it.

sorry forgot to edit that part in step 3 out. just rename the 4.54 to PC36IMG
 
good, I don't think it has anything to do with this process you are trying to do.

I have never unrooted so I can't tell you firsthand what to do. let me look at the guide and see what is up with what. :D
 
Ok ocnbrze .. I did steps 1-3.. So I am guessing I am now unrooted.. At this point should I go ahead and call sprint and get this phone switched to my account, before going any further with the re-rooting process?

ok to verify what is your hboot? and do you have s-on? if you have hboot 2.15 or 2.16 and you have s-on then yes you are good to go.

double check thought to see if you have a custom recovery still. if you get a red triangle with exclamation mark that is the stock recovery and you are good to go.

Because there is some dope head that hangs out at the pawn shop and thinks he is techno geek and he had this thing all F*** up. Screen was doing screw crap and many of other things..

all righty then you are good to go. whatever you do not update your phone or you will have to root it using another way other then the dummies guide that you use to unroot you.
