Next big phone after Desire?

I work in Denton Manchester. I can only get GPRS on my o2 desire where as I get full reception HSDPA on my 3 dongle. I have had the same problem in a few places where I can only get GPRS on my o2 phone and I get HSPDA on the 3 dongle. I have yet to find a bad coverage area on the dongle, although I dont take it everywhere I go. I have had a 3 mobile contract before and my problem was never with coverage but my bills were too much. This was before they offered free cross network minutes and unlimited texts so that was probably why. I have been with o2 for years now and I am happy with everything but my only problem is the fact that I only get GPRS at work :(

Yeah, whilst 3 off unlimited data, their coverage here in the sticks scotland is crap, so there's no way i'd take that.

With regards to keeping the contract, i doubt T-Mobile will honour the contract i'm on now, especially as there well publicised reduction of data took place. If i could get 300m, 3gb data, U/L SMS and a new handset (upto

Im not due an upgrade till Dec 2011, but if i were i would suggest moving from HTC. Why? well...

Im a HTC Desire owner, great phone at the time with exception of Internal Memory fiasco (Sorted now thanks to rooting - MIUI ftw!)
I feel that HTC make a lot of phones! but none really designed to be amazing.
Take their new line up, Wildfire S, Desire S, Incredible S, ChaCha, Salsa....
Just tweaked up versions of their predecessors, but nothing amazing to speak about. (Facebook button?? the f**k is that about)

Id recommend Samsung Galaxy S 2 or the Atrix. Why?
They are at least a big step up from previous models -
Power(DualCore)
Graphics (Tegra2 etc)
Display(Atrix-closest thing to iPhone Retina/SG2 Super amoled +)

LG optimus 2x/3d? For me, no, they got the power (Dual core/Dual channel) and the 3D (Gimmick)
But I think they lack a decent Display which you'd notice if you compare to any of the above.

Another one if you really into games - Sony Play, not sure when its out but deffo worth looking into it.

This is just my suggestion, spend time reading online CNET etc.

Good luck

The thing is HTC have been making great phones for much longer than many are aware. I went for HTC though as when I heard about the Bravo leak, they were still relatively unknown and I wanted to be different. Now though, everyone has one.

Sometimes for me, that is enough to not get one, but their hardware is good (except the camera which bothers me not) and they're good for rooters...

Would love to see one of those 3D screens :) When is the optimus 3d out?
I love the soild build quality on my desire and I would definitely buy another HTC phone but HTC dont have anything that can compare to the above phones yet. I'm going towards the s2 and seeing the videos above the atrix looks very good. I would never buy another sony phone, every experience I have had with them has been terrible, from software issues to poor build quality. I am currently in a contract that was originally with the sony vivaz. I had it six months and it had been returned twice, once being given a new phone. I was that fed up of it I sold it and bought the desire on o2 pay as you go. Best thing I ever did

the xda 1 was epic, it had a slave battery that lasted 20 minutes as ups so if you ran out of charge you had 20mins to get back to a charger or the whole device wiped itself as it didnt have solid state memory just an eprom that saved the rom install and the rest was sleeping in RAM

Same thoughts here. I've been using HTC phones since they were on Windows Mobile, even when they were licensing their phones under different brands (remember Qtek?).
The dual-core phone race has just begun, and I believe HTC will show their creations soon. Only then I'd make a fair comparisons and select a favorite (again HTC? :)).

The biggest problem IMO is that HTC can't get hold of OLED screens. I've got two desires, one early one with OLED and one with the LCD and the OLED wins hands down in my eyes.
That galaxy S2 looks lovely, but what I'd really like is a desire S with AMOLED, optical trackball and physical keys.

What is it with losing the trackball? I thought it was great.

My first HTC was an "orange" SPV-C600....

gingerbread doesnt really need it as there is on screen drag selection.

amoled is being phased out in general i think

Yeah. I think now it is like this with the screens:
Samsung SGS2 - SuperAmoled+
Samsung SGS - SuperAmloled
Everyone Else - LCD...

HTC haven't really shown off their next-gen smartphones yet. Their current "new ones" (just marginal imporvements on existing devices) are really just more of a short-term thing to bolster their lineup until their new stuff hits market, at least that's how I see it.

Yep that's what a lot of people don't realise. The Desire was an extremely successful phone, of course HTC are going to release a few different variations of it and improve upon it.

I have in the past been able to keep the same contract and get a handset with it, but I doubt they will let us do that anymore since the new tariffs are in their best interest. But what if I have my heart set on a handset they do not offer?

I went into the O2 shop this weekend and asked if I would be able to keep my existing price plan and just upgrade the phone. They said no because of the unlimited data :(

I'm also one of the lucky ones, my wife's contract has just expired, and she loves my Desire, so she is having that and i have been trawling looking for my next new toy.
I can't really see any comparison to the Galaxy S2 to be honest, ok, that's my opinion, but the dual core, screen, 8MP camera, bigger battery and gingerbread really win me over. No other imminent (i think over next 6 months) phone comes near. I did look at the Optimus 3D, but it's just a *very* battery heavy gimmick - it's nothing like 3D, just gives a little more depth.
Roll on UK supplies of the SGS2 !!! :)
