Nexus 5 Pre-Release/Speculation Thread

Wait, will I be able to disable the hangouts part of the app and use it just for sms?

Because I have hangouts disabled on all my devices because i dont particularly wanna speak to, or have people i email be able to private message over some chat system.

It's all one app. I'm sure it won't be in our faces and getting Google+ stuff thrown at us. It's the new SMS app. It's not like there is a SMS app and there is a Hangouts app. I don't know if you noticed, but on the press images of the Nexus 5 on the bottom dock there is a Hangouts app where the SMS app usually is. If you ever used an iPhone, think of iMessage. Between iPhones you can iMessage each other and you won't have to worry about the limit of things trying to send because it's our version of BBM or iMessage. Also, your messages between contacts on Google+ or and Hangouts are all in the same thread. I'm sure it'll recognize how you're contacting that person. Like iMessage chat bubbles are grey and blue when iMessaging, but when texting on an iPhone the bubbles are grey and green. Your messages through this new app will be synced across your account on different devices like Hangouts already does anyway. You'll love it. There will be nothing you need to disable. A person could be on Hangouts on their computer and be SMS/Messaging you from their Hangouts on their computer to your phone, and when they leave out they can continue that same convo from their phone. Assuming it should work just like that. Even an iOS user can fit in if using Hangouts. More like a chat app for them though. iOS doesn't allow many third party apps to replace their official apps.

I remember when Hangouts was new and I introduced my best friend who is a little more into the iOS world, and he was using Hangouts to message me and I was replying back on my PC using Hangouts on there while typing a paper. Comes up as a popup in the lower right hand corner of your computer screen. Just like when Apple shared their new Mavericks update to their computers a week ago. I feel like I'm repeating myself now, but I'm just excited about this feature. A long awaited feature indeed. That's still icing on the cake compared to the Nexus 5 we all wanted to see.

Anyways, the new Google+ .apk Download: New Google+ app with enhanced Auto Awesome features or you can wait until yours updates whenever that is (assuming closer to the Nexus 5 announcement.. Whenever that is Nov 1st?)

Snapseed has also been updated in the Google Playstore Snapseed update now available, adds HDR feature | Android Central

Just a quick question:

Does this mean every single one of our SMSs will pass through Google servers?

But can random people, or spam bots just message me out of the blue if they have my gmail address?

I use sms for people i know and trust to give my number to. I just dont want my sms/hangout inbox to be a clusterf*ck of sms's from people i want to speak to and unwanted hangout messages from people i dont wanna speak to. All I want is just an app for sms. I'm hoping google will allow us to disable the hangouts part.

Being sarcastic? You're as safe as you're gonna be. I mean Google already looks at our mail to help them with their ad service. Just gonna have to suck it up ;)

I hardly use my email anyways (you did mean email right?... RIGHT? :p), but SMS does actually matter to me.

You won't be spammed or anything. Anyone who is apart of your Google+ circles will be listed as a contact method or anyone who is in your contacts and has gmail can be listed as a contact method through Hangouts/SMS. It's just an instant messenger feature to keep the convo going across devices. You'll enjoy it I'm sure.

SMS isn't all that private to begin with because they have to go through your carrier and we all know Verizon turned over messages and call records to the NSA. Plus the can be used as evidence in court with a court order. In this world, nothing is truly private.

I'm a Canadian with Rogers, so I'm technically "overseas" as far as your legalities go. I'm not too concerned about my privacy (not TOO concerned, just a little), but I dont want them combing my SMS for keywords for ads or showing me ads in my SMS app. Awww hell naw.

That is not gonna happen. It's an IM client that can be used and will be used as an SMS as well. Nothing more. Don't think to much into it. You open it up, message who you wanna contact. Honestly you guys who don't know much about Hangouts should get the app now and get familiar with Google+ if not already. You're gonna associate with the same people you associate with now using your phone. It's not a social network thing.

Well, just making sure. Good to hear everything is as it should be. It's nice when things work out :D... Now, can we have the damn phone please? :(

It is certainly dragging on. I was pretty positive we'd have an announcement by now considering how early the leaks started. :(

I'm still sticking with my gut and saying that the reason it's not announced or released is because there's Nexus 10 issues. Asus is having issues getting their TF701 to the market on time, and that was suppose to be out this month as well. So I'm wondering if they're really behind.

Even if thats the case, cant they atleast throw us a bone?

"Hey guys, I know you all have been waiting a bit but we're having waiting issues. We can't reveal much, but we can tell you that atleast the damn phone exists. Okay? Seeya guys soon."

That is all I'm asking for. We know it exists, but official confirmation makes the big company seem small and human, and that matters.

Its in warehouses, it won't be long.

Retailers would be really irked to have all that space/money taken up for too long

lol i don't see 1 retailer complaining to LG/google about that. For that to happen the phone would have to be pushed back months. Especially if its all online sales.

I doubt carphone warehouse is the only company sitting on $1 million plus in inventory it can't sell yet.

Well, we all know the phone exist. There are photos and even a 7 minute video of it. Mentioning they have a delay would be good though. If that's the case.

you are right there are others. But can you imagine amazon/bestbuy/att/sprint whoever else actually complaining to google and LG. companies that they make billions off of.
