NO LONGER Confirmed by HTC - No 2.3 on the Desire

HTC have just posted this message on their Facebook page...

Desire and Gingerbread Update
Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you
 
It's not confirmed at all, we all know each department doesn't know what the others are saying so until there is a 100% official post from HTC Head Office ignore it
 
I got this as an email yesterday:

"Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Desire.

We are excited to announce that the HTC Desire will receive the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update in Q2 2011. Stay tuned for details as we get closer to the update availability.

We hope that this information meets with what you require, should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us."

...or are we just concerned at potentially losing HTC Sense?
 
Hmm... all kinds of contradicting messages.
I tend to believe the Facebook announcement more than private emails that HTC sends to their customers. I'm not sure though if the bloated new Sense doesn't fit in Desire...
 
But there was a leaked rom with sense 1.0 on it that runs fine on the desire so I struggle to believe memory is an issue.

Plus devs have got sense 2.0 running from the HD too. I'm not sure about this tbh. Official press release to confirm for me too. let alone to mention the 2.0/3.0 mashup...
 
maybe the uk counterpart is not interested in pushing out sense 2.1 for gb

shame as we know the asian htc have a test build with old sense :/
 
I guess it's a move to force people to upgrade to Desire S, I for one have no interest in that model as I still love my Desire.

Looks like I'll be asking for rooting assistance :(
 
All the new ROMs, bar the leaked one on old Sense, use the SD card to host a lot of the ROM so anyone using 'of course the Desire can take new Sense' is wrong. It can run it but cannot take it in it's stock form.

It's a shame if it's true, the HTC UK site also has the statement up, but tbh I'm getting a new handset soon. It's the nature of business, and the phone market in general
 
Its utter rubbish from HTC and they know it.

There is no viable reason why we shouldn't get the update...

1. The Nexus One has the same hardware, it is running it fine.
2. There are many custom roms which achieve this just fine, as well as the leaked test ROM, which was quite simply flawless without any problems or issues, as HTC claim.
3. They don't have to add Sense 2+. I don't believe there are memory issues with old sense and GB alone.
4. The phone has only been available for just over a year. I don't think a product should be effectively discontinued and unsupported so soon. Not one so popular as the Desire, which was pretty much the primary reason HTC has got where they are today and achieved such success.

5. Perhaps the most compelling argument. How come the new HTC Wildfire S, which has the same 512mb memory chip, less ram and slower processor, can run 2.3 + Sense 2.1+ just fine, and yet there are "memory issues" on the higher spec'd Desire?

It is pretty clear IMO that HTC are just using this to encourage people to buy their newer phones.

Disappointing. Very disappointing.

Sorry, when they said memory I assumed they meant RAM, not ROM.
 
Well, Nexus One is not a good comparison, since it lefts out the huge chunk called Sense.

What I find pity is that HTC calls a hardware limitation as an excuse not to provide OS update for a phone that is not older than 18 months (you all remember the recent manufacturer agreement about device support up to 18 months). Ah, well...

Rooting and custom ROMs seems the way to go... now for everyone

Odd as there's that test ROM from Asia that runs Sense 1.0 perfectly fine. I feel this might have more to do with the carriers than HTC; I wouldn't have expected many carriers to even want to offer the update. I mean why would they? Especially in markets where this phone is 18 months old.

I don't really care though, my phone is only 10 months old, and on my 3 year contract it would be silly to upgrade now unless Telus offers an amazing deal and picks up a great HTC android phone (one of the best devices I have ever owned), and I have already come to terms with being a bit behind on the times device wise. That said, as far as software goes, HTC's official ROM is of little concern for me, I would never run a stock ROM again anyway after seeing what customs can do.

I suspect we'll be seeing more people asking for root help with this announcement though ;)
 
This news really ticked me off. Somebody asked me this lunchtime about buying an HTC and I recommended them. Not sure I would say the same tomorrow.

I know the phone has been out a while, and there may not be too much change for gingerbread - but that is not the point. There will be people buying this phone in the understanding that it will get the upgrade, as confirmed numerous times by HTC. This is a kick in the teeth for those customers.

Ha I am not surprised at all to be honest! Like some of you have already mentioned HTC are pushing folks to move onto their newer devices. Whether you like it or not its the nature of the mobile industry! We all got to live with it but one way to solve that problem is...... to root!! It is the way forward as some of us already know it so it will come as no surprise that the next phone I get has to have an open bootloader and a decent rooting community. I will not comtemplate on getting a phone that doesnt give me those options esp after all the bullshit hero users went through in obtaining 2.1 and to lesser extent the 2.3 fiasco with Desire! That would drive me crazy!! lol
 
As good as open source is, this highlights the problems it brings now that HTC are saying the Desire can't have Gingerbread because they can't get it to run with their own Sense software on the device.

I like Android, but Android + manufacturer bloat + carrier bloat = delayed updates and Android fragmentation. Is it any wonder why iPhone still tends to get apps first and better apps, despite the size of Android's market share.

This is a poor show by HTC, as highlighted by other posts, and this coupled with the Desire's awful internal storage means I will probably leave the HTC brand and try a different phone now.
 
Well, they are clearly uncomfortable about their customer base perception of them. I have my Desire in for repair at present and contacted them via live chat this morning for a queery. Before I said my goodbyes I told the agent that I had heard that the Desire would not be getting Gingerbread and that this was extremely disappointing for me!!! The agent online was writing, then starting again, then writing again ... threes times in a row and finally stated " a final decision has not been made on this matter. Sorry I cannot provide any more details at this time". Decide for yourselves what this could mean. :confused:
 
I just got email from HTC saying they have not made a final decision and to give it a few more days to see what happens...
 
Just came off Live Chat having been told that the decision WAS made and that they were aware that many customers would abandon their HTC loyalty for this reason, but with the limited resources available on the Desire units, 2.3 would not be supported.

I queried why they didn't release a 2.3 without Sense (since this is what he confirmed as the barrier) and let their customers make their own decision. They replied with "...this is all the information we have available. Can I help with anything else?"

It's not coming.

I'll be off to the Samsung Galaxy S 2, I think.
 
I too have just come off live chat with HTC and the representitive said that they were unable to comment at this time.
 
Well i think ..this has been bad year for htc fanboys

** htc getting their falgship phone SENSATION openly beaten by S2
**samsung is providing faster updates than htc (e.g. galaxy s )
***even sony xperia 10 ...getting gingerbread
.... they willl be in loss in q2

god save hTc..
