No more 1 yr contracts!!

no you didn't. I don't understand why anyone would even attempt to lie about something so idiotic

he didn't and that's a fact. if he did it was just some pricing error and he got lucky that the seller actually shipped it with the mistaken price

Your right, I'm a big Liar. All I want to do is lie because that is my purpose on this forum. Do you listen to yourself before making judgements? As I speak right now there are 2 thunderbolts listed in my area for $400 and $450, with bargaining power you can reduce that to 350. That's exactly what I did. I purchased it from someone desperate who renewed their contract and wanted to make a quick profit. Brand new sealed in box, with 1 year warranty. Verified by Verizon.

So if you admit it is making them more money, what exactly are you arguing about

Seems like he is trying to explain that Verizon would like to have a more secured accounts receivable for the future. With a two year contract, verizon can predict future cash inflows for two years. With a 1 year contract its too short term for them to predict future cash flows. It may not necessarily be making them more money right here right now, but since accounts receivable is a financial asset, their company will have more value with 2 years, than 1 year.

Wow...some pretty ridiculous arguments from people in here.

First of all, if you are someone that doesn't utilize 1 year contracts...you are barking up the wrong tree if your think you're going to convince me or anyone else that we should be indifferent to Verizon changing their policies.

Math doesn't lie. If you take good care of your phones you can upgrade your device every year at minimal cost. All it takes is the initial investment of the first phone.

Example: You buy phone "A" in 2011 for $300 on a 1 year contract. You buy phone "B" for $300 on a new 1 year contract in 2012 when your reach your upgrade date. You the sell phone "A" on eBay for $250.

Now in this example you paid $70 more for phone "A" than you would have on a 2 year contract (has been this way for years). You then took a $50 loss when you sold the phone. So after the initial investment of the first phone you can expect to lose $50-$100 every year when you buy a new phone on 1 year contract and then sell your old phone.

$100 per year to always have a current phone...that makes a lot of sense to a lot of people including myself.

Will I consider switching carriers to avoid a 2 year contract....you bet your ass I will! ;) Honestly I'd sign a 2 year contract if I could upgrade my phone every year without having to shell out for retail price. It's not about being locked down with a carrier...its about NOT being locked into having an old phone.

If you don't understand why people are not happy about 1 year contracts going away after all that...you won't ever get it. But I'd just like to say this is still unconfirmed and rumors like this come out all the time...don't sweat it just yet.

It's not about being locked down with a carrier...its about NOT being locked into having an old phone.

^This is a great valid point. Since Verizon is far more superior than the other carriers, people aren't worrying about being locked into a contract, they are worried about being able to upgrade in the near future.

Although I've had my fair share of phones, I don't understand why some MUST upgrade as soon as a phone comes out every few months, at this point in the game of smartphones, they all pretty much do the same thing. I have to find an excuse to upgrade, such as being able to sell my old one at same price as a new one, therefore not costing a dime, or losing the phone.

I buy the phones from eBay or Craigslist and sell my old one. You just gotta be quick and negotiate. Cash is king. Some times, although ironically, I actually make money when selling an older phone. I'd rather do this than worrying about contracts, upgrade eligibility, early upgrades etc...

I get bored of things fast. Video games, women, phones. I like new. 20 months is an eternity for me with a phone. I will seriously consider leaving Verizon if not given a 1 year contract option. Screw 2 years.

I may be missing something, but what difference does it make? On a monthly basis, the cost of a 1 year contract is the same as a 2 year contract... Yea, you're locked in for double that amount on a 2 year contract, but aren't you just renewing at the end of the year anyway on a 1 year contract??? And it's more likely to happen that within those 2 years, VZW will increase their pricing plans... so if you're on a 1 year contract, wouldn't you wind up paying more?

I like one year contracts because the manufacture warranty last one year. The new policy will pretty much require me to buy extended warranty for the second year. That will be paid for 20 months till I can upgrade to new phone. During the second year if the phone breaks I have to pay a deductable around $90. This is just more money in there pockets. The one year contract cost me $70 extra for each phone. I guess I will have to start buying at retail and sell the old phones in a year and that will make up most of the cost. My kids like to keep the old ones because it was part of there life. They will either have to go with 2 year or sell in a year.

If you buy the Total Equipment insurance (which you need for the deductible), your warranty is extended as long as it is under the insurance policy...

Damn! I have been using 1 year contracts for 7 or so years now. Im sad now...oh well, time to go to 2 year. There is no way I am going to leave Verizon over this...

Take the total equipment insurance and times it by 20 or 24 months plus add the deductable on if you use it. Cheaper to buy one year and sell old phone. I bought the tb to lock in unlimited data.

I don't count things like that, that are just luck of the draw. People have won brand new cars off auction websites for just a couple grand, but you wouldn't go around calling everyone who doesn't pay the same price an idiot.

You ran across a good deal that not everyone can get

When it's time for me to upgrade I'll just negotiate a 1 year contract either with customer service or executive relations. Stupid policies are made to be broken.

Manufacturer warranties are only extended to the original purchaser. If the rep/tech replaces the phone it's just simply because they don't know any better.

This is bad news and nobody should be telling people that we shouldnt need to upgrade in a year because the phone will still work that is a bogus statement...I like technology and if your fine with having a phone for 20 months so be it I like new toys to play with that's my thing so don't tell me how to spend my money

^^^ This.

For example, everyone keeps saying that Verizon stopped early upgrades. Perhaps they have at first blush, but they will still do an early upgrade.

I wasn't due for upgrade until September but they still allowed me to upgrade early and gave me the 1 year price on a TB on launch day.

You simply have to speak to the right person and say the right things.

In a year, I will be signed to another 1 year contract... no worries.

Sometimes. As the economy changes, the ability to get grease will be far more limited and usually to those who have something to offer, not a person with one phone and one contract.

Actually, if you read somewhere in the agreement, If you are on contract and your phone breaks, and it is out of warranty, and you do not have insurance, you are eligible to purchase a new phone at 1 year contract pricing.

No, Manufacturer warranties (according to Verizon) are good for the first activation. Whoever activates the phone first gets the warranty.
