Nook Color vs Other Tablets?

i'm thinking they'll sell decently at $800. They're competing with teh top ipad at $800.00. And the xoom beats that in every category. What are you going to buy to top it?? nothing.

moto will lower the price as soon as ipad 2 is released (most likely). Moto is taking the approach of "reap the profits right now while its the best tablet". Once ipad2 is out, all bets are off. Pricing will be extremely competetive and most likely will undercut ipad2.

That's now what they're really competing against in the eyes of the consumer. Most people who look at the Xoom are not going to compare it against the top of the line iPad. They'll compare it agains the iPad period. You can buy a 16 gb iPad for $500. You can buy a 32 gb iPad (which matches the Xoom's internal memory) for $600. The Xoom is still $200 more and includes a data plan on top of that. I don't see people paying $200 extra just to have an Android tablet. You're basically asking people to pay a $200 Android tax.

It drives me crazy when Android fans sit here and compare the price of the Xoom to a one year old iPad with 1/4 the ram 1/3 the processing power, lower screen res 1/2 the sensors as if the price should be competitive.

Wake up!!!

Also there is no indication that any of the competitor tabs will be any cheaper.

I wish I could hit 'Thanks' a few more times.

I hear you...but a top of the line laptop in 2010 cost you virtually the same as the top of the line laptop in 2011. $1,000 got you an high end laptop in 2008. $1,000 will still get you a high end laptop today...with much better specs.

If the price continually increased by 25%, high end laptops would now cost you $50,000!

The iPad is overpriced and should to be reduced in price to reflect the older and slower components. But instead of that happening, the XOOM is setting the new standard price for a top of the line tablet.

So what will a top of the line tablet be in 2012? $1,000 or more??? The world will end in 2012 before the majority of people pay that :D

And in 2005 the same laptop was $2500. The bottom line it's a lot cheaper when you have all conventional components in a big box. These tablets are 1/10th the size and virtually a prototype of the future.

I bet you if you wait till 2015 you will get a really cool tablet fro $375. Why don't you wait?

Also remember price is established by what people are willing to pay not what you can afford.

You're missing the point. The average consumer is not looking at specs like RAM, processor power, screen res, etc...... They want a functional tablet for a reasonable price. In the consumer's mind, $500 for an iPad is reasonable. The sales numbers for the iPad bear that out. Is $800 plus a data plan reasonable for an unproven (in the consumer's eyes) tablet? I think the consumer market is going to say no.

We'll see but I bet Motorola has spent a lot of money finding out what people will spend.

By the way I don't think they have in the past or now bet on average consumers.

Based on your reasoning the XOOM should cost less...not more.

And yes, average consumers have spent a lot of money on Apple products. How many iPhone 4 owners know the actual specs of their phone? A dual core processor in a tablet might not impress a lot of average consumers...especially when they can buy the highly successful iPad for several hundreds less.

I'm not debating which tablet is better...I'm just questioning the marketing strategy that motorola is using here. But what do I know?...I'm responding via a modest $279 tablet. ;)

$800 off contract for the XOOM makes sense.

It will be subsidized if you sign a 2 year data contract. Remember that the Galaxy Tab started off between 500-600 on contract then got pushed down to $300 by Sprint. The same will happen.

I bought my evo off contract for $450. The subsidized price with contract renewal was $200.

There's a lot of pre-emptive sticker shock based on speculation going on. Heads exploded when a best buy website said the xoom was going to be $1200 when all that happened to be was a placeholder price on the page set up to be the pre-order one in anticipation of its launch.

I expect the Xoom to be $500-ish on contract once the dust settles.

The last thing I need is another data plan. I have a rooted nookcolor that can run honeycomb. For cameras and GPS, I have my evo that I can use to wirelessly tether my NC to.

Think about this...

$500 "on contract" price (if that's available) + 5GB 3G data plan for 24 months = $1,700 total ownership cost before you buy a screen protector, case, apps, etc.

Now throw the 3G or 4G phone and phone/data plan cost on top of that. If you buy a 3G phone for $200 on a 2 year contract, your minimum total cost of the phone ($200), phone plan ($40/month for 450 minutes), and data plan ($30/month) will be approximately $2,000 (after taxes).

$2,000 + $1,700 = $3,700 for 2 years (or $1,850 per year)

I don't know that people will be too eager to buy tablets on contract. The price of the data plans is a big turnoff for many people. Forget the price of the device itself as that is a one time fee and you can actually sell the device if you needed or wanted to...it's a tangible good.

I'm not saying people shouldn't buy a tablet on contract but especially in uncertain economic times, a tablet with a data plan may end up being a burden. Having a tablet without a data plan and a much smaller tethering fee that can be added or deleted at will seems like a much more reasonable option.

I think the wifi only tablet market will continue to thrive as long as data packages are as expensive as they currently are. If a data plan is required for the XOOM...it's DOOMed LOL

Honestly, I think people would be foolish to buy a tablet (any tablet) on contract. Do you really want to lock in to a device that's going to be laughably out dated in six months or less? I don't see why you would buy a data plan anyway with wi-fi being as available as it is.

Agreed. Almost all of us are already paying for unlimited mobile data on our phones. Just tether to your phone if you are out of wifi range.
