Not Stock Android

The bloat will still need to come off to keep battery life good, even if it doesn't bog down the processor/memory. I won't hesitate to root it right out of the box, though.
Unused apps take up internal memory, but they don't use any battery unless they're kept running in the background for some reason.

That's the problem. Some of the bloatware you can't uninstall still runs in the background. I recall from the Incredible that I'd always find Skype running, even though I never used it. It became part of the bloatware with one of the OTA upgrades. Another was that caller ID app that everyone griped about. It was a nice app, but I wasn't paying a monthly fee to keep it after the trial period. Yet there it always was, running in the background. I had the same apps on the stock ROM that I had when I moved to CM7 and my battery life went from 5-6 hours to 14-15 hours with the same amount of light usage. Between Sense and the bloat, battery life was horrible. It was the difference between me having to have a spare battery on hand at all times before root and really not needing to be on a charger from wake to sleep after.

With the Charge, it's a bit different. Battery life wasn't a problem, but I couldn't successfully stream bluetooth with the stock Froyo ROM without a lot of stuttering. Some built-in process was mucking up everything. I suspect it was TW. Now, it almost never happens.

It's a double-edged sword with Android. What makes the OS great is the open source nature, and choices for everyone between major manufacturers and their discriminating features and design. Unfortunately, to compete, they customize the UI which really bogs down the platform's performance in absence of overwhelming power (CPU/memory), and bumping up the spec leads to higher power consumption. Then you have these competing manufacturers bowing to the carriers (in the US, at least) and including more crap. Really, if Android was kept under the control of Google (vanilla), it would rival the usability of iOS. Then again, that would mean captive hardware and less choice, the exact thing that makes iOS inferior IMO. <heavy sigh> We must live with the trade offs.

Great info, thanks kyler. Yeah I'd be rooting under those conditions too.

Hopefully they atleast put a battery the same size as in the sgs2 and maybe even increase that battery size for the prime. Usually samsung is pretty good with battery life though.

If it indeed is not stock android I wonder how updates will work? I mean could it be possible that samsung and google would be working very closely with updates and the prime would still get updates direct from google?

Good question.

Since it is a Verizon phone. I think the updates will come from Samsung with the ok of Verizon.

Yes no doubt about it. Verizon won't allow an update to go out without internal testing. That's why when this phone is announced I won't be surprised when its a lot different from the actual Nexus.

So true.....

Verizon does not like there customers to modify their hardware.
They are even tight about their fios cable boxes as others will let you modify to a point.

I agree but I wonder if google made some stipulation for verizon to get it first maybe that the updates would come straight from google? One can wish anyway.

I think this was a three way deal between Verizon,Samsung and Google before the Moto-Mobile and Google buy out.
After this the Flag ship will be Googles new OS to come on Moto cells first.

Agreed. And maybe - just MAYBE - the Google/Moto merger will put pressure on VZW to end this stupid bootloader thing once and for all, if they want any decent phones on their network. One can hope :)

You do realize all moto phones are locked down just not the one's on verizon? It is more with the manufacturer. I mean if it was on verizon why is it only moto is tightly locked down. Samsung, htc, and lg are not. Just saying.

I figured after this moto would get the newest os first and since they have a very strong presence on verizon I am sure verizon will be getting most of the moto flagship phones if not all of them.

I do realize that. I also posit that Google wants users to have a true Google experience with pure, unadulterated Android. Now that they've purchased Motorola, they're in a great position to unlock bootloaders and release stock vanilla devices. A dream come true!

Now if we can just get VERIZON to come on board with that and carry their stock devices, we'll be in cell phone nirvana.

I think with verizon supposedly getting the prime or whatever it will be called we are seeing a shift in that direction with verizon. I mean they see how well android is selling and that+ the iphone= huge money makers for verizon and I think they want to do everything they can to get as many customers and make the most $$$.

verizon is going to do whatever they need to in order to make money, its unfortunate, but they know not everyone roots their phone and removes that verizon bloat, my friend has the captivate, and she isnt rooted, and she cannot stand the at&t bloat, says she never uses it, and doesnt even want it on her phone, i just keep saying give me your phone for 15 mins, and it wont be on there anymore.

i dont think verizon will ever release another phone that is unlocked.. its sad, but i dont think they will. :(

Verizon will NEVER have a phone without it being bloated and stuffed with Verizon add ons. That is how they make money off people who can afford it and people that do not know any better.
(GPS-NAV, Vcast, ETC.)

Pay for this pay for that...

Agreed. They will bloat all the android phones. There has been no exceptions since OG Droid. But Moto also locks their boot-loaders on top of that while others unlock boot-loaders.

I could care less about how much bloat they put on. If they continue carrying manufacturers who do not encrypt their bootloaders and make it easy to root and remove the bloat I could care less if it has lots of bloat. The encrypted bootloaders are what is the pain.

agree........

unencrypted and I'll purchase it. No big deal about bloat.

I agree, But only about 10% of Verizons customers hack their phones.
90% of them can care less or do not know how to hack, etc.

But I am one of the 10%'ers....:D

True that, but: we 10%ers influence a whole bunch of 90%ers on which phone to buy. Verizon would be well advised to listen to what we have to say and quit pi$$ing us off! :)
