Note 3 cases?

Depends on your definition of thin.

I bought this case a while back. Wasn't as thin as my current case, but definitely covered sides, top, and bottom:

SUNSKY - Frosted TPU Case with Detachable Plastic Frame & Holder for Samsung Galaxy Note III / N9000 (Transparent)
I didn't like the overall feel of the case, but might give it another try at some point. For the price, it was worth a shot and definitely the thinnest case I've seen that incorporates a kickstand.

I just picked this up, also, just for those long days where I know I'm going to be taking lots of pictures and won't be near a charger (e.g. at a sporting event, or amusement park...this type of case saved me when I had the Note 2).

There are a bunch of different versions of this, but I elected for this one because of the access it gives you to the S-pen. All the other options block the S-pen, but this one has an attachment that connects to the s-pen and allows you to remove it, whenever you need it.

Not interested in portfolio type case that opens on a hinge.

These cases offerNo portrait view with kickstand only landscape. Portrait and Landscape view are make it or break it criteria for me.

Have we found a case yet that is thin, protects top and bottom chrome as well as sides and back, and MOST IMPORTANTLY has a kickstand that works well in BOTH PORTRAIT AND LANDSCAPE VIEW WITH KICKSTAND? (I'm not using caps to "yell", just to emphasize importance) Thanks!

can I ask you..

Why??
why do you need kickstand in Portrait?
I can not think of a reason.

the case I linked.. it does do landscape on either side.

I use flipboard.. and it only works in portrait ..
but I tried to read with the phone on a desk.. just not comfortable.
I read with the phone and/or book in my hands.

the only time I use the kickstand.. is watching vids.
and landscape is best.

That's interesting because I don't like portfolio type cases either. Both of the cases I linked aren't portfolio cases. The charging case has an option for a non-portfolio type, but as you said, neither offer portrait viewing. Sorry, wasn't aware that it's a deal breaker for you.

I ended up getting this battery charging case instead:

The reason I opted for the one above is having access to the s-pen. The one I posted earlier doesn't have the same available access.

FYI-If you want to add emphasis, to your criteria, I suggest either Bold or Underline. Both are available when preparing a reply.

I have just ordered the Trident Kraken AMS Case. Looking forward to getting this :)

I have the same case. It's very protective, especially at the corners where it's most likely ot land if dropped. Unfortunately that also makes it a bit bulkier. A little harder to pocket than if it didn't have the extra cushioning, but that's the tradeoff for the extra protection. As I'm a bit clumsy at times I'll just accept the small increase in size. I've dropped my phone a few times now and wasn't worried about it. Not with the thick silicone inner case, and the hybrid outer. I'm not going to throw my phone across the room, but this seems the most likely to handle the abuse. Moreso than even the Otterbox Defender. Mostly because of the corners.

The screen protector is horrid. I removed it almost immediately. It increased the friction or drag tremendously even when using my finger, and was nearly unusable with the S-Pen. It almost felt like I was trying to run the pen over some shrink wrap. Of course removing it did reduce it's water resistance, but I don't think it was that great to begin with. I would also rather be able to use my phone. It fits well with the iLoome flexible glass screen protector.

if I read another thread here correctly it looks like Samsung is aware that kitkat made some 3rd party accessories useless, and will correct the problem...

As I sit watching TV I leave phone on (wakey app keeps screen awake) and as emails come in I can more comfortably answer them. Sometimes I use apps that only have a portrait view and with kickstand I can put phone and check out portrait view (like keeping track of a game in espn app). I use portrait view more often than landscape view. In landscape view my home screen also looks stupid. (too much vertical compressin)

Where does the phone usually sit, when you're doing this (e.g. flat on the couch, on arm of recliner, on side table, etc.)? Only reason I ask is just trying to get a better idea of what type of accessory would really suit what you are going for. Even a thin case with a kickstand, that could be used in portrait, likely wouldn't be very stable on a couch, so the more we understand, the better we can help keep our eyes out for something that might work for your needs.

I see..

The holster can be a kickstand in portrait.

I use ADW launcher.. It does landscape of homescreen pretty good

The holster on the Fintie case can only be used in Portrait if you remove the rubber and TPU coatings and put the naked phone into it, Even then the angle of slant is about 455 degrees which isn't what I'd call optimal for viewing.

It works.. Without removing anything

What is 455 degrees?

Nice stable snack stand. (right next to laptop on same stand) Right now I'm responding in portrait mode (one handed) as I eat my lunch at the mall. Phone sitting in portrait view on stand in vzw case. My only complaint in this case it provides no protection on top and bottom.

Okay, now I have a better idea of what you're going for. These are multiple accessories that can be considered (if not for you, there may be others that could benefit from any of them:

Portable kickstand that can be stored in wallet (although, not sure if it could handle the Note 3 in portrait)
Portable Kick Stand Holder iPhone 5c 5S 5 4S 4 3G 3GS iPod Touch | eBay

Amazon.com: Clingo Universal Mobile Stand for iPhone 4, 3G/3GS, and All Cell Phones and Mobile Devices: Cell Phones & Accessories

Amazon.com: Rabbit Mini Portable Stand for iPhone 5S, 5C, 5, 4S, 4, 3Gs, iPod, Samsung Galaxy S4, S3, S2, S Phone, HTC and other Smartphones: Cell Phones & Accessories

Kickstand that one could stick onto a case and also couple as a way to keep the phone from dropping:
Amazon.com: Udilis Colored Universal Ring Middle Finger Phone Holder Stand Clip Support for Phone iPhone Samsung iPad Nokia HTC Sony etc Black-US Shipping: Cell Phones & Accessories

Case that isn't quite "thin", but not as thick as others I've seen and gives the added protection and can be used in portrait:
Amazon.com: Evecase ARMURE Rugged Dual Layer Ultra Protective Case with Kick-Stand for Samsung Galaxy Note 3 III - Black (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and All Versions Compatible): Cell Phones & Accessories

Here's another that, seems it would fit the criteria you were looking for because the portrait kickstand is integrated into the case and does have a little protection on top and bottom (but not that much):
Amazon.com: Amzer Snap On Shell Case with Kickstand for Samsung Galaxy Note 3 N900 - Retail Packaging - Black: Cell Phones & Accessories

The Armure appears to be portrait view only. The last one is a copy of the vzw case offering no protection on top or bottom. I'm looking for a case, not additional accessories.
Thanks for your suggestions but no luck yet.

The amzer looks just like the vzw snap on case. Is it basically the same? Notice on the vzw case there is essentially nothing protecting the top. The bottom looks the same.

when my S3 screen shattered... it had a case that did not protect the top and bottom like that.

when it fell...I was using a wired headset to listening to music..
fell from table to wood floor.
right before it the floor.. the wired headset pulled and created a fast spin.
it hit the wood floor in a spin.. at the on protect bottom.
shattered!

I love the way the case looked.
but that has scared me away from those types of cases. :(

Yes, it makes no sense not to cover top and bottom edge. That's why I wonder if Amzer case is the same?

I bought this case in white. Haven't used it yet but got it for special occasions. The case I'm currently rocking *looks* like a bulky Otterbox I got off Amazon. It was cheap and serves it's purpose; has a stand so I can do what I need to do in my kitchen and watch Netflix at the same time.

The amzer? I still don't have an answer on whether the top of the amzer case has more protection than the vzw case I pictured?
