Root Obsidian beta released

Which brave soul will try this?

Be careful, it doesn't play nice with Koush's Bootstrap Recovery.

Camera, video and GPS still don't work.

Have fun!

Obsidian

It doesn't like Bootstrap, but apparently it has it's own recovery built in that you can access through the power button.

Interesting.

I just noticed that, too...

Oh well, I planned on waiting until they fix the known issues.

Couple weeks hopefully!

Newbs: Don't try this until it becomes less beta and more stable. It's beta and has some serious issues (which is why it's still beta). Whereas it's an exciting new rom for us, it is only for more experienced users. If you are inexperienced, you probably will brick. I'm just trying to look out for you guys. :D

THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT SO BE CERTAIN YOU READ IT
Koush's Bootstrap Recovery utilizes a similar hijacking mechanism to what obsidian does. For this reason, if you bootstrap the recovery after installing obsidian, you will effectively overwrite the hijacking scripts that obsidian uses to boot RENDERING YOUR DEVICE UNABLE TO BOOT INTO OBSIDIAN.

Obsidian for this purpose comes with its own copy of CW recovery already installed. In order to reach it, you can simply long-press the power button to bring up the options menu, and then select

I don't think it's out yet even as I don't see anywheer to DL anything. Now that I have flashed I am no longer afraid of these things but I need my phone to work pretty reliably (GPS especially and a working camara is nice). I'll be waiting and watching though, this could be the next big thing!

Download says "coming soon" yeah. Not available yet.

Yes, the release page is up on ccroms.net but the dowload link says "coming soon." @cvpcs will Tweet when it's up.

Sorry for jumping the gun by posting this thread. When I saw the release page was online I assumed the ROM was released.

No worries, been hearing a lot of talk about this. Lots of people hanging on the edge for this one. Seems like he is really close to releasing the Beta finally.

Friends,

I hope you don't mind. I merged the threads as we don't need two and they belong in the root section anyway. If you have a problem with this, please send a PM to a mod.

Thanks!
Steven

This is pretty much what BlackDroid took and made UDX (Ultimate Droid X) with. UDX has all the same problems. I had UDX on my phone for a whole week waiting for RC3 to drop. When it stalled I bailed and look for a different ROM.

It (UltimateDroid that is, never tried Obsidian obviously) is an insane ROM. But I will warn you right now, as soon as you try this ROM, none of the others compare. All I find myself doing anymore is trying to find something similar to UDX. Because besides the bugs that are still in it, it just flat out whips every other ROM's ass! Honestly, there really is no comparison. Using it really made me jealous of every other device out there that can run it because they don't have locked bootloaders. So I can absolutely, without a doubt, 100% guarantee my next device will have no such handicap!

Honestly, I never even had a problem with blur until I saw what this phone could do without it slowing things down. Hell I never even over clocked this son-of-a-gun while running that ROM, there really wasn't any need to. This thing knows what you're going to do before you do when running UDX, and I'm sure Obsidian is the same. Now I HATE blur, and completely understand why it was so frustrating devastating when they couldn't crack the kernel. Everyone is big missing out big time by not having the opportunity to run Cyanogen's ROMS.

Which brings me to an interesting point... after seeing all the drama that went down between Cyanogen and Black Droid I thought UDX was a 100% rip off of Obsidian. But he must have done SOME of his own programing, because UDX does not have the bootloader problem described in that literature.

Anyone who is gonna try this tonight... Please make sure you battery is charged to 100% before you even THINK about flashing it. Just in case you need a major SBF session :)

Please give us some feedback on how it is!! Thank you all!

Yeah, I'd like someone else to brave it, first! ;) Steven pushes Fab out to test the rom. ;)

How long before themes start hitting it? Speed is nice, but gotta have my pretty too!

I'd give it a few weeks. But I don't know. I'm all about speed I could care less about themes. Though I do think the gingerbread themes are pretty handsome.

Also, it says wifi doesn't work. Wifi does NOT work. It will connect but then you will be throttled to 2G speeds basically. So yeah, make sure you have it turned off.

Ok, about to restore my nandroid. When the bugs are squashed, this ROM will be awesome, but for now, the battery life renders the ROM unusable (down to 60% after an hour).

Here's one of my favorite features, the 'GEM Settings' addition to the settings app, where you can tweak a lot of things about the ROM, such as the rotary lock, and a whole bunch of theming options (colors of text, clock, etc.)
