I've been intending to exchange my Droid X for an Incredible, but the froyo pull was too great and I installed it yesterday. I also received word that Incredible would be in stock soon.

Have I voided my warranty? I am not rooted.

The short answer is YES it voids the warranty. And rightfully so.

The phones can get upgrades that are pushed out by Verizon and this would not void the warranty. Installing something that is not an approved update will void warranties.

It makes sense. Why should Verizon foot the bill because someone was impatient to wait for an official update to load something that is made available by someone that noone knows and contains who knows what.

Bricking your phone and trying to hide it by by flashing back to out-of-the-box before returning it does nothing but cheat Verizon and all the Verizon customers.

Nah, I'm fairly happy with the leaked build and have confidence the official one will be superb. Like DJ Lance Rock, I'ma break it dooown.

Ball-busters:
- Apparently can't send MMS via Handcent anymore, have to use stock txt app (which sucks something fierce).
- LauncherPro+ keeps restarting itself randomly. The latter is apparently not restricted to a 2.2 problem however, just ironic timing I guess.
- Tasks can't kill other tasks anymore. Thumbs down for Tasker, SystemPanel, and any of the ATKs.

Annoying:
- Frickin' Battery Monitor randomly force closing problem that everyone is having. That thing is sweet when it works.
- New Swype keyboard looks like crap.

Noticeable Improvements:
- Stock camera is slick now.
- New battery power saving modes are awesome.
- Stock gallery, much improved. I uninstalled the 3D one because of this.

I suppose the trouble with all of the above answers is that they lack noted sources. :)

EDIT: So is 'flashing' back to factory as simple as booting in recovery mode and selecting the 'wipe data/factory reset' option? Or do I need to use the dev tools and find a factory ROM, similar to flashing something third-party?

Yep. I got a refurbished unit because I sent mine in for a warranty replacement. Verizon reflashes all phones anyways so it wouldn't matter.

Unfortunately there is no proof that Verizon reflashes all phones... unless of course you happen to have a source to substantiate this?

This is the challenge we all face... lots of theories and very few supporting facts!

Here's a rather disturbing quote from the article: "Experts said there is no law requiring AT&T, Verizon or other providers to remove personal data fromphones turned in or swapped for warranty replacements each year."

Maybe no proof that they don't flash it to stock, but common business sense tends to point to saying "They most likely do". Imagine the financial and reputation backlash Verizon would get if Joe Snuffy tweeted about how he got a refurb phone that had Bruce Willis and President Obama's phone numbers in it. I think it's safe to assume here that Big Red covers their ass and wipes the phone.

Now, whether it's ethical to flash a phone to stock to hide traces of voiding one's warranty by rooting/etc and bricking the phone. I think it was well answered above that if the flash to stock was successful, there's absolutely no reason to return it. Problem solved. If they did anyways, it's not like temporarily bricking the phone cut 3 years off the life span of the hardware. It's a software thing and Verizon will fix that up and send it on it's way.

That's my two cents that no body asked for ;). I'm charitable, see.

In a quick Google search I found a handful of examples of where replacement phones (which should have been reflashed) were showing up in peoples hands with unexpected "gifts" from the previous owners.

Android Phone Loaded With Porn Sold to Woman

Refurbished BlackBerry had former owner's secrets - NYPOST.com

Dad's shock at porn film on mobile; Videos on replacement phone. - Free Online Library

Maybe it's me but I suspect "common business sense" is no match to the realities of doing business in this day and age...

Loving 2.2......had the battery manager force close issue, but seems to be resolved after a reboot. No other issues to report.

I keep hearing people say that the sound is louder after updating to 2.2.....mine is exactly the same, am i missing something or are the people that installing it just thinking its louder when its not....I had the original droid and that sucker was loud...my X is worthless on speaker phone, and the ringtone I cant hear in my car with my exhaust(my droid I could).

I have been hearing about his people are having issues with 2.2 . I.have had nothing but goodness with mine. I love how now when I post on here how everythin is in the box on the actual website and not the text box.

This is soooo true. Example: when I was on sprint back in the days and saved money by getting a refurb phone.

Def was a refurb all right, phone belonged to a hot girl, complete with her nude pics in the camera's memory. I was not going to complain :).

Hooked up to usb, transferred the pics. Then factory reset the phone.
if you do some research you will see other reports of people getting refurbs with other peoples data on them as well.

*soapbox* Can we please stay on topic? I had to filter through three pages of folks debating ethics and returning phones. *end soapbox*

I updated last night and it took all of three minutes from selecting update.zip until I was back on my homescreen and looking at all the new stuff. Loving flash, but makes the web pages really slow and jerky. Maybe the official release will fix that.?.? All of my screens were exactly as I left them. All apps still on the phone. Still rooted and able to use wireless tether!

The bad, only one so far. Woke up this morning and received a gmail notification. Well the phone decided to change my notification to one of my mp3's. At first I had no idea what was going on, but finally figured it out cause it stopped when I opened gmail. Got a call from a contact with a custom ringtone and it too was reset to some random song. Got to checking and all contacts with custom tones were reset. Don't know why and hasn't happened again. Just an FYI.

Sorry if this has been asked a million times but i do read alot of these and have not come across the answer yet...
I am rooted with easy root when 2.2 comes out will I lose root if I do not move the su file from bin to xbin or is that just known for the leaked 2.2. Should I move it just to be safe now and do I have to move it back after its updated or just leave it there?

I really want to try the leaked version but the steps have changed so much I am not sure of what the latest is.

Thanks

I think you're gonna find that we simply don't know the answer yet! We know that the process changed somewhat with this leaked development release.

I think it safe to assume, at this point, that it'll change again between now and the time that VZW releases it. Why? Because it's apparent that Verizon and Motorola are doing what they can to keep the DX from getting rooted and hacked as has happened to other Android phones in recent memory.

just posting my 2cents, installed leaked rom on my unthemed, unrooted DroidX and as stated earlier, took all of about 4-6 min to be back at home screen with new changes, yes the phone seems sluggish at first but thats because everything is still falling into place with files and updated locations and settings, a quick reboot after the update and everything was smooth as silk, i actually ended up removing about 6 apps that either didnt work because they were made for 2.1 and hadnt been updated yet or didnt need any longer like Dolphin browser since flash now works on stock browser, updated the rest of my apps that had available updates and one more reboot and this phone is so perfect its insane.

folks please remember that its not the phone or the update that screwed up an app its the app that hasnt been updated yet, if anyone uses the Curse client for WoW you know what im talking about.

this was super easy, did it this morning, took about 5 mins. was already rooted via 1 click, upgraded, still rooted. 1373 quadrant. flash, speed. awesome. custom status bar already done over at xda. mydroid world received a c&d. better grab the files while they last!!!!!

great to hear, and im pretty sure a simple pm to anyone on this thread would yield anyone else some kind of file that might update their phone possibly if someone might have saved it perhaps,... just throwing it out there..

1. Do i have to move the su file back to the bin after update or will it work in the xbin the same way?
2. Should I wipe data cache somehow (gotto look up how to do it again) before update or is that only if i sbf flash?
3. What does factory reset do? Delete apps that i have put on, contacts, messages, ect.,?
4. I am rooted using easyroot on 2.1, have lpp installed and ha e changed my icon pics. No themes or roms. I backed up data and apps with titanium. I have never removed any bloatware. What would be the best way for me to update.
