The car application panel is like a homescreen for when the phone has been docked in a car... big buttons for common apps basically

Okay can someone explain to me HOW these updates work?

I keep hearing talk of other manufactures releasing 2.2 soon, but NOT HTC. What I don't get is why 2.2 will already work with some phones but not others. It's only the operating system, so surely once it's working on one 'droid phone, it should work on them all.

You don't see Microsoft say, "Okay so we're releasing Windows 7 next month, but it will only work on Compaq PC's. Dell owners will have to wait another 6 months for their version to work." Is the internal architecture of different 'droid phones so diverse that some manufacturers can't use 2.2 till they've done some internal upgrades to their own firmware?

I REALLY don't understand how 2.2 can only work on certain makes, but others have to wait.

Quite simply because HTC like to replace or enhance certain parts of the O/S which takes time for them to do.

OK, lets go with your windows analogy;

In windows, you have the windows OS running in the background. You then have a UI over the top of it (called 'explorer' & referred to as the 'shell') This shell is what displays your icons on your desktop, and your start menu / task bar etc. The shell can also be forced closed / re-launched via task manager. In fact, you can replace the entire windows/explorer shell with your own custom shell - it doesn't look like windows, but it still is windows.
(Windows shell replacement)
So, say you're using a custom shell for windows, and MS decides to launch a new version of windows - would you expect your custom shell (which has nothing to do with MS) to instantly work with new windows? No, you would need to wait for the dev of the shell to update it.

Not much difference with android/sense. Sense is a UI overlay for the android OS
Other handsets don't have a custom UI, so can take 2.2 as it comes (such as Nexus1)

Oh, and actually, it is often the case that even a stock release of windows won't work on all machines at launch, as new drivers often need developing as each machine has different hardware, and this is also true for handsets

Look, I want 2.2 as much as the next person, but why are people getting so agitated about it?

Yeah. Will be keeping an eye on xda over the next week or two. As soon as a decent version leaks I'm installing it.

There was almost no difference between the 1.21 leak and the final version that went OTA two or three weeks later. Why wait for HTC to test them when we can do it ourselves...

Doing it yourselves will probably be more thorough and reliable testing too!

The biggest reason that they don't let us test is that when someone finds a bug that could damage the phone in any sort of way (Freezing, crashing or whatever), HTC could get sued by tons of people... :/

So how many of you will update your phones on day 1 when FroYo comes out? Will you jump right on the bandwagon, or will you wait a bit till the dust settles?

I will try to be the first that updates. I will ducktape my high speed fiber optic connection to my cellphone just so I can download the update that much faster.

Thing is, it's still in it's beta stages. Native DivX playback would be great because it could use hardware acceleration, and maybe start to play at 720p res.

Simply because people like technology, and this new update brings a whole new list of features for their phone that they love.
Agreed, but it's not worth people getting their knickers in a twist over it.

There have been some pretty angry posts on this thread, and it's just not necessary - live happy people - life is too short to be worrying over which version of android you have on your phone :D
it will come (hopefully), so just sit back and play paper toss or something whilst we patiently wait

Let me pass you a ladder so you can get off that high horse!!

I wasn't getting agitated or pissed off about it. It was a genuine question as I'm pretty new to the world of Android. I keep hearing talk of certain phones already having FroYo, but we're having to wait for HTC to release it for the desire. I was just asking why some can use it already, and others can't.

Probably the best, most sensible post in this WHOLE thread.

Well said my friend.

I might give it a day or two before I jump on board.

Watermarks have been removed from the 2.2/Sense rom and a video posted

It looks like FroYo is already running really smoothly on the Desire. It looks like it's running that little bit better than Eclair.
