I just ordered my desire from T-Mobile today, looks as if im waiting til september for froyo. Although, thats probably not so bad for me, as i will have no previous android experience ill just be happy to have a decent phone :)

If you get/use an Unlock Code does that mean you'll update to 2.2 with the first wave, or will it still be treated as an Operator Locked unit?

Unlocked handsets are different from unbranded. Unlocked just means you can use a different operators SIM. You may still have an operator branded ROM in which case you will have to wait until it is released by whoevers branded phone you have.

AFAIK the best way to check is by checking your software version which should be 1.21.405.2 if its stock unbranded HTC.

If you're on 3 then this information might be useful:

  • 2.1 Android with software number 1.21.405.2 is an unbranded Desire
I am on 3 and I have this version installed as I got one of the Desires from their first UK batch.

The update will be great if it happens but not going to get too excited yet...

I got mine in May and it received this unbranded update OTA, then I had to get a replacement a couple of weeks later and that came with the updated unbranded software already installed.

So, what have we learned from this? Those who are patient will be rewarded.

Erm, sort of. Except in the world of technology, waiting a year or two and then being given something other people had a year ago isn't really what you'd consider being rewarded!

I am sure a LOT of people have no longer even got a Hero, so couldn't care one bit about getting 2.1 at long last!

Does HTC determine which firmware update you get by the firmware you currently have installed?, or, do they use a product code like Nokia to determine which network branded or generic firmware updates you get?

If they use a product code then all those people that have purchased a phone directly from their network operator that currently have generic firmware pre-installed may end up with a network branded phone after the update to Froyo.

Just a thought.

Just want to say to all you conspiracy theorists (HTC Desire will never see Froyo.. you'll likely see it in 2011.. you'll not hear from HTC 'till December..) ha. ha. ha. Where have you all gone now?

That is all :p:D

I debranded my (t-mobile) htc desire phone to stock rom (v1.21.405.2) will I get the OTA 2.2 update?

Edit: It's not rooted.

I dunno why people keep bringing the hero issues in here.
It's an entirely different case!
The hero had to be updated from 1.5 to 2.1.
I don't know if you know, but the changes from 1.5 to 2.1 were pretty big. Alot of things changed in the system's core.
In 2.2 they mostly added things, which means less work for htc. This gave then more time to add some features, like HD video capturing, and itunes sync.

I was talking in comparative terms. Orange was last to update Hero. As they heavily brand their phones, I know they will be the last to update Desire. T-mobile, O2 and VF have all come out with their statements on expected update. VF probably the fastest one as they brand their phones the least. I have been trying to get hold of someone from Orange who will shed some light with their time line and have been very disappointed, especially with Conor on Twitter, who always avoids difficult questions.

My Desire is rooted and I'm running a DeFrost ROM. Will I need to change something in order to get the OTA update? (I want Sense back.)

I.e. do I need to flash a stock unbranded ROM?
