"HTC and Google have officially confirmed that the HTC Desire Android smart phone will be updated to version 2.2 Froyo by June 23."

Err.. where are the sources of this info? Not a good article because of that.

I dunno man its a good glimmer of hope for me.. because i want apps on my sd card and i want it officially. .. I hope htc hurry that up..If it comes out next month il be over the moon

That guy is just re-reporting the BS rumour from earlier in the week, and obviously hasn't bothered to do his research.

The internet is a haven for lazy journos.

If there had been official confirmation from either Google or HTC last week (and why on earth would there be confirmation from Google anyway?!) you can bet it would have been all over these forums.

think this thread is going in the wrong direction..here we are mainly talking about the Freyo OS n not the OTA update which was made available at april beginning... if any one has got any concrete info on Freyo update please do report.. is it june 23rd or later??

Sorry to ask...but if I have already rooted my desire (followed the guide Lekky - Nimbu kindly provided) how would I upgrade my phone so that it has the 2.2 update - will I always have to wait until Lekky provides an update or will I be able to download it straight from HTC.

If 2.2 is going to provide App2SD is there a need to root the device, if not how can I un-root my device?

Once rooted, you can't 'unroot' a phone as you've tampered with the radio and/or bootloader. To get the OTA update, you need to reflash your phone with the Stock ROM.

How do you reflash your phone with the Stock ROM? Is this something everyone will do who have rooted their phone?

Not entirely true, rooted users still get the OTA update HTC released this week.

I didn't say you won't get OTA update if you're rooted :P Just that it needs to be the stock ROM. So if you're using the Modaco or Cyanogen Mod ROM, you can still get the OTA update? I was given the impression that if you have a 3rd party ROM on your phone, the OTA update won't work.

Please forgive my ignorance/noobness...

The Nexus1 is made bt HTC isn't it?
It's pretty much the same as the Desire...?

Therfore... how come the N1 gets 2.2 before the Desire...?

Google hired HTC to design and make the Nexus One based on its specifications. The Nexus One is Google's experience phone :P The Nexus was released January 5, 2010, while the Desire was released 3 months later. The Desire is in essence a COPY of the Nexus; where HTC did some tweek to the design of the Nexus, added Sense UI and called it the Desire :P

because HTC Desire has Sense UI which is custom made ROM from HTC and not plain android. that is why HTC developers have to Sense UI on top of Froyo (2.2) and i think they will have problems with JIT (just in time) compiler.
so basically, we all have to wait until this happens, (HTC Hero just got (Taiwan) their Eclairs 2.1 and they've been waiting forever) so God knows how long we will have to wait, but i think its definitelly way after rumored 23rd June.
despite all that waiting i actually don't seem to have need for eclair (apart from apps2sd implementation) and some other fine tuning of the OS. im so happy with my phone that it does all i want (had terrible experience with Samsung galaxy- which is laying here on the table switched off since the day i got Desire :) hehe)

I think we'll be waiting until christmas, then we'll be crossing fingers they jump straight to gingerbread - which they might in the 1st QTR.
HTC suck BIG time.

well that's exactly what i think but i really doubt that HTC suck as they got this amazing phone with this amazingly customised android OS, but i know who sucks big time is SAMSUNG! look at all samsung threads-people dieing there from samsung's ignorance and any kind of support. all the updated i had on Galaxy where unofficial. im so happy to have gone for HTC :)

My understanding is that Gingerbread will be available for all android phones direct from Google and it is then up to HTC to provide Sense as a home replacement in the Market.

I think it is very unlikely we will officially see Froyo as Sense will require a full rewrite to comply with Google's new push for defragmentation of Android.

Also my friend got the X10 and I was shocked to hear they where still on 1.6 this was meant to be a new phone. He said that 2.1 wasn't even going to be until 4th quarter. *gulp*

I doubt this as it would require Google providing harware drivers for all the phones out there. It would be way too much work for Google.

From a marketing perspective I can see froyo appearing from HTC via a new phone (Scorpion?). Like how we were intorduced to 2.1 via the Desire. Then all the older phones followed with updates. With that view I wouldn't expect to see froyo on the desire until Q4 2010 at the earliest. More likely Q1 2011.

If their plan comes off, the crux will be via Google direct via market, and the drivers and UI from the manufacturer OTA

But if the UI update isn't made, the could this plan lead to the possibility of sense being disabled by an update because its not compatible?

It is widely known that Google is taking more control so as to reduce fragmentation. It is possible that it will be future phones only and some standardization of hardware may be required.

It is the way that it is heading.

They should add a few new rules for example all devices need the latest firmware.

I know its designed to be open source but this is a bit stupid.

Actually, its widely speculated, not 'known'

There is already a standardisation of hardware tbh, home button, back button, menu, you'll find these on almost every device i think.
