Official Android 2.2 Discussion

Hmmm, not really.

They presented ios4, then released it officially to the developers, then announced a date for WWDC in which the new hardware and ios4 updates were presented.

They communicated. They didn't just present features then go silent.

Remember, they have announced ios4, presented new hardware, announced pre-orders, and now launched the ios AND the handset. All within the i/o and now.

I'm not wanting to use them as an example as it'll move away from 2.2 discussions and the fanboys will hijack the thread.

We shall see. I was under no illusions that we would not see it on Desire today. I am plumping for christmas for the official release, then some moaning about Gingerbread before springing for another handset in the new year that launches with gingerbread.

get over it mate, it hasn't come out today so some "reported" email was wrong ... lets be honest, it hardly a product recall is it!

In fact, your phone, depending on which you have already has most of the features that the iPhone 4 is introducing! So while Apple are busy releasing their dated update on time, Android are busy planning their next update!

Don't see the problem personally!?

trick202 you seem to be taking this OS release all to personally, reality is not much will change in your day to day operation of the phone, even when you finally get Froyo.

It's because I've been spanked by the Hero once already. The inevitability of this happening again is not making me happy. I'm not taking it personally, I'm just able to criticise the platform without saying ten hail marys.

And Zoidy84: A Kia has "most of the features" that an Audi has. What's your point?

Hey guys and girls,

I have an update available here (France) on my HTC Desire (not branded).
The update thingy tells me that the update 1.1.405.2 is available and is 27.07 MB sized.

I dont't know if it's the famous Froyo update but when I download it (with 3G, i have no wifi ATM), it says me that the update file is corrupted :-(.

Any idea about this problem ? I have 48 MB available on my phone memory and over than 2GB on SDcard.

Thanks for your help.

You know what - I agree with you in a way.

I expected this too - but I am really disappointed to see the same shit happening again and again.
That's why I have pegged christmas as a date for release.

Not sure if this is significant but my desire has just had an update. Without me checking it alerted me and asked to apply the update. It downloaded (27mb) it and took a few minutes to install it.

Here are the before and after screen shots.

No Froyo yet as I can see but seem to remember that there is a 'firmware' update that precedes the software update? Or is that wrong?

It lost the personalisation of the Sense UI so have spent a few minutes putting it all back.

Weejohn, that lookks like the same OTA update I received a couple of weeks ago, which added a couple of tweaks to the Youtube app (HD, for example) and not much else.

It's an upgrade to the 1.21 FW from HTC (the same one the rest of us got a couple of weeks ago). Looks like your network is only just rolling it out.

3 are a pretty big network, aren't they? Oh dear... I suspect we're about to be flooded with these posts...

Did you seriously expect to get it today? The only version of 2.2 released up to now is a developer build for the N1. This version is not a stable, fully featured build - Google is still working on this. HTC are only going to push an update of a stable release candidate, not a developer only beta. Even then they need to make sure it integrates with Sense first otherwise it won't be usable.

There we go. Four weeks between announcement and release isn't so bad.

Hopefully some official announcement from HTC will follow soon.

Why would anyone expect a FroYo update today?! It's not out for the Nexus One yet (officially) and it was only a customer services rep that said to expect it today, not an official announcement from HTC..

Didnt HTC say to expect it in the "second half of 2010" ? If so, I'd say that's probably more like October or onwards than June!

Still finding my way round Android and the Desire... is this upgrade worth it? And is it easy for idiots like me to do?

As I understand it, no-one officially beyond a HTC employee in a email conversation reported over on XDA Developers that there would be an update today. Or have they?

I was under the impression anyone setting their heart on a update TODAY was going to be sorely disappointed.
Of course the authenticity of the HTC email has been proven, hasnt it?

As already said countless times, until it's out on the Nexus One it wont be out for the Desire. Even when released, there is no timescale for how long before we'll see it on the Desire.

You can waste your time checking for updates if you like.

It should be easy enough to download and install. You should be given a notification that there is an update available and it should be a case of following the prompts and everything falling into place. :)

I had an email reply from HTC earlier saying "very, very soon" so I'm optimistic (perhaps foolishly so) that 2.2 isn't a million miles away for the Desire.

My question was phrased in such a way that it could easily have been fobbed off, but the rep mentioned specific apps unprompted, which I can't imagine he'd have done unless he knew something was in the pipeline.

Dial B.S. for...

Anyone see the source code is now released?
Of course, it doesn't help you guys, they still need to build it into the phones...
