I've wondered why HTC doesn't just re-develop Sense UI to run to with Android 2.1 instead of having to practically force 2.1 to run with Sense??

All other "Home replacement" UI's are developed to work with 2.1... why not Sense?

They have. It's called the HTC Incredible. IT's not HTC that hasnt had the update ready folks, it's VERIZON not putting it through QC.

It's already out on Sprints version. It's out on a Canada version. It's just Verizon it's not out on. You folks are blaming the wrong people.

And do not look for it ever to come through Verizon quality testing. They don't care about it, as the Eris is going out of production.

I'd put the odds of VZW releasing 2.1 for the Eris is probably 30 percent chance if enough people complain, but quite frankly, the phone sold way less than the Moto and will sell way less than the Incredible, so they don't care.

couple of things.

1. You giving him a +1 for calling people idiots is idiotic.

2. Why are Incredible upgraders idiots? I mean, if the contract is up, its the best phone Verizon has. Yeah, he can wait a year... and a year after that, he's in the same boat as everyone else. And we are the idiots?

If you are talking about people paying retail, again.. if people have the money, they can spend it as they wish.

The Eris is a piece of junk. The Motorola is great but big. The Incredible is going to set the new standard.

And next year? Yeah, I may pay 500 for a newer one. What's it to ya?

Why is the Eris junk? I don't understand why you are bagging on the phone.

Well, take the context of his post. He is justifying his jump to the Incredible. He didn't like the Eris and he paid full price for a new phone to get away from. Nothing wrong in that. He said it was "junk" because that was his opinion and so he switched.

It's better than what some other trolls have been doing by owning the Eris or another phone, yet still coming in here and posting random rants about how the phone sucks. But they don't have the Eris anymore...or ever.

He does have a point, though. Why is he an "idiot" for spending the money to get a new phone? If I had $500 to spend and it was my wish to get a new phone, I would do it.

I don't like it's plastic feel. my wife has one, I think it's slow. And her battery life is really bad and she barely even uses it.

I just don't think much effort went into it. It's a budget Android device.

Where in F's C are you getting these numbers from? 30%? Sales numbers predictions?

2.1 is not out for any Hero version, GSM or CDMA.

That's my point exactly.

You can wait a year, every year, because next year will be better phones. some people (like me) just buy phones whenever.

I happened to have one upgrade for the Incredible to use, which I did. but I bought my wife's Eris on Craigslist for 150 dollars... no big deal.

I'm sure in a couple of months some people who need cash will have Incredible's listed for 250 or less. It happens. I scoop those deals up and sell them on eBay!!!!

Why don't you think much effort went into it? It's a rebranded HTC Hero, a phone that was already out on other carriers. What do you think they should have done better for a phone that was almost a year old when Verizon released it?

2.1 is not out for any Hero version, GSM or CDMA.

I stand corrected, it's ROLLING out for the Hero any day now. Engadget posted it last week.

Notice no updates on Verizon.

Look, I'm not trying to act like I know something. But Ive talked to my good friend who works in a testing lab before I did the unofficial 2.1 update on my wife's, and the guy flat out said he doubts it ever happens because their focus is on other phones and the Eris is going out of production I believe in May or June.. kaput. It's a resource issue.

Verizon has a lot in the hopper. The incredible isn't the biggest news of 2010 for them. they are dealing with Blackberry 6.0, the Incredible, the new windows phones, and they have iPhones being tested right now. Not to mention Android 2.2 in the coming months.

No.. I'm not guaranteeing the iPhone comes to VZW, because they test phones that never make it all the time. He carried a Nokia N95 3 years ago, LOL. But it's a fact there's 3 CDMA iPhones in Dublin Ohio in VZW testing right now.

He tells me they are not told if it is coming or not, they just do their jobs to see if it works.

Then by your logic Verizon wouldn't release Blackberry OS 5.0 for the Blackberry Tour (a much older phone than the Eris), a phone that is also going out of production around the same time as the Eris.

Oh wait Verizon did.

Well, I love my Eris. I am running leak 2.1 v2. And everything is running great. I couldn't live without the additional functions. Perhaps I lucked out, I don't know, but I have not seen most of the problems many ppl are reporting. I also have not seen a force close since switching to 2.1. I have found most issues I have had were related to program conflicts and settings. My Eris is still turning heads at work and elsewhere. Love it.

If I had the cash to throw down on a new phone of coarse I would move up to the incredible. But I figure impatient ppl will feel shafted regardless what they have. By the way, check out the sim card issue (comes with no sim card or a few who get only the 2gb card) with the Incredible. Makes me smile because I know ppl will freak out over it.

I just got the official 5.0 update last week on my tour...htc eris is not being discontinued. It is one of thee hottest sellers. 2.x will make it to the eris last, verizon is always the last to release a software update, for a good reason. Be patient, out will be here. Your friend doesn't have any ideas what software is being worked on until it comes out.

here! Straight from htc themselves to me:

Hello Nick, I understand how important it is to have the latest updates for your device. While it has been announced that the Sprint Hero will be receiving an update to Android 2.1 in early 2010, the exact date of when an update will be available has not been announced yet. Before releasing a ROM update, we have to be sure that the software is going to work properly on your hardware and on your carrier’s network. This testing does take some time but will result in an update that is optimized to work on your we want to release software as soon as we can, we will only do so once the software has passed our quality standards. I talked to a VZW rep today at best buy. He claimed no 2.1 in the near future for the Eris. Do I believe him? Not really. Could he be right? Maybe. I had reps from all the carriers tell me things, and sometimes they are right and sometimes they are wrong. They know about what is out NOW, so to me, they are about 1 level above a sales rep.
The rep today knew nothing more than I did about a phone that is coming out tomorrow. So really...

device powering down and resetting while sitting with full battery, phone resetting while on a call, youtube app non functioning, google map crash. Keyboard on phone randomly switching to numbers while in the middle of typing, phone dropping calls in full service area with full signal...thats just a few i have had with my original eris and replacment eris.

That's interesting, thanks for the input. I haven't had any problem with the resetting, google maps or youtube. I have, however, had issues with links within applications not working - such as the Bank of America app. I have had issues with the phone dropping calls, but I've had that issue with my previous non-android phones as well.

I've tried ahome, home++, open home, and pandahome - but I honestly didn't like any of them better than Sense because of the widgets. I really like the people, calendar, and weather/clock widgets and just haven't found anything to replace them.

I was using a task killer with 2.1 v1, but found that the ones that I tried caused more problems than they were really worth. I get about a day's full use of my phone with active text, voice, and internet usage - which isn't that bad for me. I charge mine every night and that's perfect for me.

The Home replacements only slow your phone down more. If you're have lag issues, don't use them.

Are you using ATK and not some other task killer? I find ATK to be the best and it does what I want it to do when I want it to do it. I also use it sporadically and not every time I wake the phone or put it to sleep.

By chance do you have your weather showing with your time with the new 2.1 update? For some reason mine is not showing, it just says "My Location"

it does that occasionally for me. hasnt happened for i while. i think its an issue with the gps. maybe weather is causing an issue?

I have all but given up on getting the official 2.1 ota, which is fine, cause i installed the leak. I read on android and me that 2.2 may come out may 20th. what are the chances ( I know probably none) that 2.1 will be skipped for the eris and go to 2.2? i know the eris is going to be phased out, but that doesnt mean that they will stop with the updates right? for the ppl that already have one? they just wont sell it anymore. I would be beyond upset if they made my phone obsolete after only being out for 7 months, and didnt provide an option to stay current. also have read conflicting stories that the eris will and will not get 2.2 because the processor cant support flash. any thoughts?

Well the thing about the processor being unable to support flash is bunk, in case you haven't noticed the blatantly obvious flash support in the 2.1 leak... Honestly, I'll have a bone or two to pick with Verizon if they drop support for the Eris when it's no longer part of their product lineup.

I don't think you are correct. No version of the HTC Hero or the Droid Eris has an official release of the 2.1 update. Supposedly Sprint will be getting it in early May. The European HTC Hero is supposed to see it in June. Once a version of the Hero gets the update and we are still waiting, then I will be unhappy and know that is is Verizon holding up the update. But, since nobody has received the update yet, I would assume it is a software development issue that will probably get resolved.
