Official Droid Eris 2.1 OS coming very soon.

Ok so i am a complete and utter noob on here and I have been sitting here at work (even though I am done) for the passed hour now reading page beyond page of this and other fourms in order to figure out how to do this and I have a few questions. I want to get this "official" 2.1 leak but will this erase everything on my phone? I saw that I should use AppBrain to backup my phone so that I can still get market place updates but how do I even do that? Also if I get this update does it also root it? I would NOT like to root my phone. Also..this sounds terrible, but HOW do I do this? Does anyone have a tutorial for this specific update? Or even just how to install the leaks in general. Basically..how do I download this update and how do I keep the stuff that is on my phone?

First, if you are going to use any leaked version of 2.1, use the one listed here and not the one listed in this thread. The one in this thread is no more "official" than the one in the link I gave you.

Second, follow these instructions to install:

Third, if you are uncomfortable about messing with your phone or the tutorial is confusing to you, don't do it.

Hello all. I've been lurking around for a few weeks now and I still haven't made up my mind about what to do with the upgrade. Wait for the OTA? Root? Leak? I had my mind made up that I would wait until the end June for the OTA then root if it still han't come, but now with v3 I'm not sure. I do have a question. How do I disable the native sms? I use handcent and I get 2 notifications for every text I receive. Thank you guys for all of your helpful information! I have gotten plenty of help from this forum.

open up messages him menu>settings and uncheck received notifications.

i think in your case, you should go with this leak. you will still get the OTA when it comes.

There is no down side to rooting. When the OTA comes it'll quickly be rooted by someone and you can install it that way, so there's nothing to worry about. it's up to you whether to wait or root now, but you definitely shouldn't install a leak that will prevent you from rooting.
 
I think that I will just stay patient for now. The main thing that worries me is the bug where you can't hear your calls? I will just keep an eye on the forums for a couple of weeks and see how things are going with this new leak then make a decision. OBTW andrizoid thanks for the link to swype, I love it!
 
There's a link to Swype? I didn't see it. I installed Swype the other day but it wouldn't work due to incompatible screen size I believe was the message. Is there a working link for users of 1.5?
 
Yes andrizoid has it listed in the must have apps thread. I have been using it for a couple of days now and it is awesome! I still haven't figured out how to collapse the keyboard without entering text though.

Hit the return button and the keyboard goes away, if that's what you're asking.

The eris has absolutely been discontinued. Geez. Read the tech sites. As soon as the product is gone from inventory.... it is gone.

This is a fact, fellas. Look it up.

can't believe I'm wasting time with this, but here goes.

apples to oranges. BlackBerry will ALWAYS get updates simply because it's a business centric device. I mean c'mon, that's common sense.

Guys.. when the Eris never gets 2.1... I won't rub it in. Just remember some of these responses from you guys. haha.

And I am not stirring the pot. The absolute only way the Eris ever gets 2.1 certified through Verizon is if the sky falls.

U think HTC wants them to put it out now? No way. They want people to buy their incredible.

Just watch fellas. Remember, this update was supposed to be out one month after launch. What's it been now, a year?

C'mon guys.. again, clear the rosy glasses off and root your Eris if you want 2.1 or install the non rooted version.

It's the only way you are getting it.
 
Hitdog, just so you know the eris has only been for about 6 months, which last time i checked was only half a year. I highly doubt that Verizon wouldn't release the software, they would lose a decent amount of customers if they did, plus they already have 3 official leaks that have been released so it is obvious that they are still working on it.
 
I dont know what your guys' sources are but its already been officially announced that its not discontinued, its a hot seller and it definitely is getting an upgrade.just unsure when.

I believe it came out in November...which is a good 6 months away from being a year.

I went in to the Verizon store today and there happened to be an HTC rep there. I talked to him for a whike and he said they had a conference call a couple days ago with corporate and they are 100% coming out with 2.1 for the Eris. He said it's slated for May 12th at the latest, and quite possibly sooner than that.

STOP STIRRING THE POT!!! You have absolutely NO IDEA when it comes out, sure it probably will, BUT UNLESS YOU ARE THE CEO of HTC, No one on this forum knows the answer.
Since I'm a surgeon, I'm callin' it- 8:47 time of death of this thread... lol

What year? :confused:
 
Several sites are saying Sprint is rolling out 2.1 for the Samsung Moment as we speak and the Hero sometime next week.

We aren't on Sprint, nor are we owners of Heroes, but it's a step in the right direction for people that aren't us.

We should be getting it soon. Maybe after the Hero.
