After we get 2.1 OTA when ever that may be. Will 2.2 be updated from Google like they want to start doing or will the updates still be Carrier specific? Or will it be after 2.2 is released then Google starts updating on their end? I'm just curious on that if anyone knows.

Brainfart, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

:D

Kidding.

Repeat the question? I don't get it.

In other news, G1 users have the full 2.1 ROM for root users. While I don't know anyone personally that has live wallpapers working, I have been told it is functional even on the G1.

In addition to this, despite websites saying proper Flash will not make its way on to older devices, I am hearing that is false and older devices, although none were specified, should expect flash as well. This was told me to DESPITE it being mentioned by reputable sites that the hardware is what limits the phone, and it doesn't seem like you can change that.

Just telling you what I heard from a trusted source.

I made a thread saying 2.2 should be out later this year. I lied. It's most probably coming out at the conference this month (it's technically May right now so...). Expect it on the N1 and higher end devices later this summer.

EVO will be out in late-June or July.

The Nexus Two, or the Moto Shadow, dunno whatever you wanna call it, should be here before year's end as well. This part should be taken with a grain of salt, it's still preliminary.

Several sites are saying Sprint is rolling out 2.1 for the Samsung Moment as we speak and the Hero sometime next week.

We aren't on Sprint, nor are we owners of Heroes, but it's a step in the right direction for people that aren't us.

We should be getting it soon. Maybe after the Hero.

Hero = eris. wiki and htc can both confirm.

You have to go right to Sprints site to download it's not over the air Sprint say's it's to large. That's what Verizon will proly do or should I say should do.

You act like the Boozie Bad-Ass on here with your quick tidbits of info. We know that, man. Different carriers have different hardware and even if they did have identical hardware, the software will always have some minute differences.

The Droid got the update OTA. And I'm sure there are more Droid users than Eris users. Granted, the upgrade was from 2.0, to 2.1, but I'm sure they still had a 100 MB file that erased everything on the phone.

I think VZW should post a direct-download link on Megaupload or something and post it on here first. Then, whoever doesn't care and can wait can just get the OTA. The server checks to see your kernel version, if you already downloaded it, great, if you didn't, here it comes.

Actually, that's pretty complicated.

It was about 15 MB for the Droid upgrade, and it didn't erase anything.

Who knows maybe the V3 leak is really the OTA update. Even Incredible users are having signal bar problems on their phones. Either way I don't care. Running 1.5 now. Debated rooting but then decided my phone works so perfect the way it is. Always have over 90 MB free and the phone never lags.

Nice one... Movie Quote

Well from what I have read Google is wanting to start updating all android OSes from their end at some time in the future and not have each Cellular Carrier release the updates like it is now. I may be incorrect about this... this is why I am asking if at some point Will Google take over the Android updates after 2.2 possibly? or is this just speculation at this time or even way to early to even consider the possibility of this becoming a reality at any time in the near future?
Now was that a little more easier to understand?

I see now. Google can do that with phones that don't have a custom UI. Examples include the G1, Droid, and Nexus One. There are others. These are considered "tier-one" phones because Android is just dropped onto the phone made by the manufacturer (Motorola, HTC, etc.) and nothing is added by them.

These "tier-one" phones are usually the ones that get better and faster support if something goes wrong because it does not have to go through so many middlemen. Google sees a problem, fixes it and sends it to the carrier after some testing to make sure it works.

In the case of the Devour, CLIQ, and Backflip, they are running MOTOBLUR. It is a custom UI. HTC devices like the Incredible and Eris run Sense. Same thing. Home is like a cake with no icing. It's dry but some people like it that way. These custom UIs like Sense are the icing, they make the cake look pretty and, arguably, taste better. It comes down to preference. Icing has some nasty calories. Custom UIs take a toll on your RAM and may slow down the phone a bit.

In addition to this, phones running custom UIs have a middle-man when it comes to updates. Google makes 2.1 for the Eris, HTC adds Sense, tests Sense, VZW takes this, tests it themselves and we're still stuck without it. This is why no phone, other than tier-one phones, have 2.1. It took the Droid a surprisingly long time as well to get 2.1, considering the N1 got it in January when it was released with it. But that was supposedly VZW's server issues that hindered it. But the custom UI adds an extra step to the process, making updates longer and more complicated. Sometimes it isn't Android screwing with the hardware, it's Sense. And since the two are intertwined, it's possible that a butterfly effect occurs where correcting one thing breaks another.

So I dunno if Google really wants to deal with it like this. iPhone users can do it because Apple makes the hardware and software. Not sure how RIM does it, but..

NPH: If you're still sour because I told you to "relax" and that posting three times in a short span of time about an issue like so:

post 1 - "I have this problem"
post 2 "guys, any solution to this problem?"
post 3- "I guess it's ignore NPH day"

then it doesn't bother me. At the end of it all, I answered your question, and that's all you really wanted anyways. I don't run around cracking a whip around here because I'm one of the youngest on here, but what you were doing was irritating and I simply told you to chill.

Brainfart, were your feelings hurt too? I figured everyone had seen Billy Madison and would understand. I sincerely did not understand your question and decided to have some fun. Nothing personal.

Nah man I liked the Billy Madison Quote. No feelings hurt here at all. After I posted the original question I thought about it if anyone would understand what I meant so all is cool thanks for the clarification and the education on Android and the way things work on that end.

I thought that quote was from Billy Madison but wasn't 100% sure for some reason. I guess you could say I had a Brainfart hence the user name :D

I have an Eris (for just under a month now) and my dad just got one. Well today he was in Verizon and my dad told me that the Verizon guy told him that the update went out a week and a half ago. Of course I was like "I don't think so" cause we know that it isn't out yet and why would a tech guy be telling my dad it was. This phone is new to my dad and he has no clue about the phone yet, let alone any talk of updates like we all do so it isn't like he was even inquiring about it.

Honestly, this forum is the best place to get your info. Some members on here know more about VZW, their phones, service, plans, etc. and have a career outside of this.
If 2.1 comes out, this will most definitely be the first and best place to go to get info. and possibly a link to download it. ;)

all jokes aside... i took my phone to verizon... they say it is f-d (thx to 2.1v3)... so they are sending me a refurb...

can't wait

Verizon will take a leaked 2.1 v3 eris and give you a refurb???

Depends on who you talk to. Some members of this forum have been turned away from stores, and others have been helped no questions asked. I would try calling customer service and having them send you replacement if you're thinking about it.
