you guys bring up a few points I didn't think about -1. multi-user households2. 3G/4G bandwith caps3. phone getting very hot/battery depletion

Just a general assumption, but if you are at home and running the Hotspot app on your EVO, wouldnt you have it plugged in somewhere? Or atleast most of the time while you are running it?

As far as the phone getting hot, have no clue about that. Never even used a hotspot app before. And until its hands on tested and noted....how do we know what kind of affects 4G has on the EVO/battery?

Why don't you just get the Mobile hotspot... its probably cheaper. Besides it just depresses me to think that there is an EVO out there not being used.

The mobile hotspot plan is $59.99 per month. Additional line = $19.99, 4G addon for mobile hotspot application = $20.00 Total = $39.99. Twenty bucks cheaper than the mobile hotspot plan.

Release date for Sprint Blackberry Bold 9650 Sunday May 23

Sprint | News Release=

i had been waiting for that phone ever since my Tour started to give me problems a month after release and they were already talking about its replacement.

I found this site when I was bored one day, started reading up on the supersonic and haven't wanted anything but an EVO since!

Yeah a lot of us frustrated blackberry owners seem to be hopping on the Android bandwagon. I've always loved berrys but RIM has just been cranking out turd after turd recently especially when it comes to CDMA devices. I always had the uneasy feeling that RIM treated the CDMA carriers as second rate and would much rather create nice devices for AT&T. The reverse seems to be the case with HTC.

I know this would be considered "off topic" but seeing as there is no other news:

I know that LTE wont really be available for a long while but this is still a bit worrisome.

Wimax wasnt expected to live long anyway just a stop gate till lte was fully functional sprint was planning on going LTE anyway if you watched the CTIA key notes.. its to bad LTE and wimax coudlnt get along and play together would have been faster for everyone ohh and something I found online..

It should not be worrisome. Sprint already left the door open to LTE, they have the capability to change to LTE, and they also have requested a LTE bandwidth.

I will still be getting an EVO, if Sprint decides to go LTE, they are in the making of a Wimax/LTE chip. It will probably be in their next phone(EVO successor) just in case they decide to drop Wimax. LTE is still being built and will not be ready until next year which would be right in time for Sprint to have another beast of a phone with the dual 4G chip.

They've got to be releasing in June.

I know a lot of you have convinced yourselves that the Incredible is somehow way worse than the EVO is despite having virtually identical specs where it counts (my personal exception being the ability to watch HD video / HDMI), but in reality, they're just about the same phone. Point being, no one is going to hold out for nearly four months after a virtually equivalent phone is already out on the market, and obviously Sprint probably doesn't want to lose the techno-buzz that the EVO has generated.

As far as competing with the iPhone... the EVO doesn't, if you're talking about mainstream perception. The iPhone isn't going to be toppled by any one phone because Apple are geniuses when it comes to creating buzz. Local news companies around my neck of the woods have stories on them when they first come out, for god's sake.

It would be a massive gaffe to sit on this phone. Sprint won't do it.

Finally, a plea... half of the posts in this thread are off-topic and watering down what was once a great, informative thread. I get that a small community has been built here, but what are the chances one of the mods can make one post some sort of journal post whose contents are links to other posts with actual news in them (where "news" is stuff like folks posting about discussions with their reps or when SS posts information)?

We are probably past the point of no return. Too many new people comming in to this thread and too much anticipation for the phone. As good as the OP and forum mods are, I don't think we can get this thread back under control. They tried several times on the Incredible thread, but ultimately let it run wild.

It is a little sad, but just seems the way things roll at a certain point. I now just scroll through and look for the posts with many thanks attached. I just no longer have the bandwidth to keep up with everything here, so you probably wil not see many posts from me now. I'm sure that will change when I get my Evo and start posting about my crazy setup.

Every phone I have tethered via Wifi had to be plugged in. The battery drains within a couple of hours otherwise and the phone definitely gets hot. On long road trips I would bring a power inverter and plug my laptop and phone in so I could browse the web and kill time (as a passenger of course).

The hotspot app will be best suited to situations like this where you are away from home and not near open Wifi at a hotel or a cafe. Those are infinitely preferable due to stability and speed but wifi tethering via 3G or 4G will be excellent to fill in the gaps when your home, office, or public wifi connections are not available. I wouldn't want to use it as a substitute to save a few bucks.

To clarify, users who currently have 4G via one of the other available 4G devices are NOT subject to the 5GB cap. Only 3G users are subject to the 5GB cap.

Great to know that they were smart enough not to put a cap on 4G usage. But in some of the videos shown in CTIA, a couple of reps were showing off the Evo it only had 3G and they said there are times when it goes back and forth between 3G and 4G and this is in Vegas. Even if I was living in a 4G city, I still would be afraid that during times when it switches back to 3G I would rack up the bandwidth in no time. However, I'm very happy that there is no cap on 4G.

I too had thoughts very similar to these......then I had a brain storm!!!

I can add an additional line (@19.99 per month) get 2 EVO's, leaving one at home as an ISP of sorts.....added benefit: if I lose or break my EVO I have another one on 'standby!'

I only pay $20/month for my cable internet so I'll stay with that. Besides, I'm not sure I fully trust Sprint as a more permanent home solution, we use them for our field services team on 3G netbooks and they actually are not very reliable and data throughput is spotty at best. I have no 4G in my area yet so I'll re-investigate the possibility once I have 4G I guess. Online gaming is a big concern for me as well, I need to test that fully first.

It's just like anything else...I am in a strong 3G city but on occasion I fall back to 1xRTT if the signal is weak. When I use my laptop via Wimax in the city, occasionally it drops out for a block or so. It's just the nature of a wireless network. The main thing to see is whether or not it is good at seamlessly falling back to EVDO when you hit a weak Wimax area.

they were still working on getting 4g to work on the evo at ctia. thats part of the problem they had a prototype out at ctia where they should of had a fully working model ready to go by then

Well I hope that the EVO does not drop on a Sunday. For whatever reason, both of my local Sprint Stores are closed on Sundays. So heres for a Saturday release!
