Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

my personal opinion is we were all just looking for something to go wrong and assumed because of the shady wording the worst...

i'm sure we will all be fine, for now, and the 10 will be optional... MOST of the people who will own this phone, have never been to a 4g city and probably won't until it is in their home town

While I have little problem with the $10 surcharge, IT'S NOT OPTIONAL!!!! I really wish people would stop saying that.

Here is John Taylor's blog. He is "a spokesman for Sprint Nextel on public policy issues."

There have been a TON of questions about this monthly Premium Data charge. I hope this will clear things up.

If you buy the Sprint 4G EVO, you have to pay this $10 charge each month. This is specific to the device. It's not related to whether you are using 3G or 4G. It is required if you have the phone.

Because the phone has a faster processor, a huge 4.3 inch screen and an 8 megapixel camcorder/camera, we expect you will be using a lot more data than you would with our other devices. These features will give you capabilities that have previously never been available on a wireless device and we think they provide a premium experience. (Remember, this is the world's first 3G/4G Android phone.)

Separately, some have asked about the $29 a month hotspot charge. (You can connect up to 8 WiFi-enabled devices to one EVO if you pay that monthly charge -- but this is optional.)

I hope this clears things up. While some don't like it, even with these charges, we're still cheaper than AT&T and Verizon, who's 4G networks exist on some beautifully designed PowerPoint slides. ;-)

is the $10 surcharge going to be optional, or is it mandatory?

anyways, i just found out that i get a 15% discount b/c of work, so, guess who still comes out ahead?

me. it's me that comes out ahead.

nick there are more than one source in the world for sprint... there are others stating it is OPTIONAL... no need to red font me

I think some people are living in some serious denial for whatever reason. I don't think the communication amoungst Sprint's employee's (ecspecially one whose job is a public policy spokesman) is so off that they wouldn't know what they are talking about. Has this guy gone rogue or something?

Not to knock androidandme, since I like the site, but I would hold a bit more credibility towards an actual experienced Sprint employee (As John appears to be) and a major website which millions of people rely for tech news (engadget) over it.

yeah the more i think about it i'll be getting more no matter what at sprint, even with the $10 evo tax. the prob is the wife refuses to leave her iphone so i'll have to go it alone at sprint. how many minutes are in the 69.99 plan? 450? i think i reported how many minutes i have at att wrong before, thats what i used to have. 450 will be plenty more than half of what i get at at&t. again tho i fail to see how i'll be saving money but i'm married so i guess i have to deal with that :D

edit: not to mention i wont be dropping half my calls anymore lol

I am quoting as I go along, dont forget you will have ANY MOBILE as well, which will cut down on the min you will need
(apologies if this has been covered in the last few posts)

do people not read?

i guess i have to make a point for people

$10 is mandatory on all price plans...

Dude, chill out.

We're getting reports from different sites saying that it's not. Is it mandatory? Probably, yeah... But when a major site announces a strike-thru of mandatory, then add optional afterwards, it's worth posting.

If it's mandatory or optional, I don't care either way. I'm getting an evo if I have to kill someone for it! I live in Houston and frequently visit San Antonio, I'm gonna be completely coverd by 4G goodness ^^

It is not. I just called my rep from sprint. It is not.

There are 3 $10 packages running around.

1.) is for business costumers that do not have everything data plan.
2.) is for a group of apps that include movies, games, music and tv
3.) is for online storage of enterprise data.

All three are optional.

They are not charging for wimax on the everything data plans.

not charging wimax? your talking about the wireless router function and not the 4g...

as for everything else, hard ink on paper is what i see in the ad. anything else unless coming from sprint, doesn't matter unless someone can post something stating an explanation from sprint

Do I also have to pay for it if there is no 4g in my area? Or is it just a mandatory extra $10 to have the evo?

You will have to pay the $10 data fee to use the 4G coverage if it is available in your area.

So if it is not available, which it is not, I do not have to pay the $10 data fee- is that correct?
7:34:37 PM

Tristan
That is correct. It is only if you would like to use that coverage area.

The guy that we buy 1000's of phones through said that. Period. There will not be a monthly increase in the premier everything plans. Only if you want to add on the premier data plans, which will included music, movies, tv, and games.

Now they could be shifting him. It is possible. But so far, he has been right.

not saying ur wrong, but that's what everyone is saying

Alright guys so who's happy about an amazing day? Release date on the EVO, new information. 2 way voice calling. This is a great day for the forum, a day many of us were aching for. Just wanted to set out some recognition for the guys making this possible. Sprint and HTC. So much buzz. I am SO excited for this phone.

I am so confused with the Everything Data Plan $69.99 or $79.99.

Is this only for internet connectivity? What about minute plans?

I will be a brand new Sprint customer.

How much money is it going to cost me that day? How much money do I have to bring?

In the email I received it says this:

May require up to a $36 activation fee/line, credit approval and deposit. Up to $200 early termination fee/line applies. Phone Offer: While supplies last. $449.99 - $150.00 (two-year activation) - $100.00 (mail-in rebate) = $199.99 (final price). Mail-in Rebate: Requires activation at the time of purchase. Line must be active 30 consecutive days. Allow 10 to 14 weeks for rebate

Does this mean that I will have to pay

$449.99 + data plan ($69.99) + minute plan (whatever it cost) + $36.00 activation fee + taxes?

You would think Sprint might have foreseen some confusion and added a little emphasis on the pricing...
