Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

I pay ~$13/day in tolls here in Northern Virgina. I could avoid about $10 of that if I got up earlier or didn't mind taking 45 minutes more to get home.

Man.. and I thought 6 was pretty expensive 13 dollars is outrageous.. But i guess i would be in the same boat if i stayed in Virgina..

I didn't like the $10 extra charge at first and it initially dulled some of the excitement I had for the EVO. I've come to rationalize the charge and accept it for two reasons:
1) I liken it to driving on a toll road (do they still have those anywhere?) where you can choose to pay the toll and have a shorter, quicker trip or you can take the long, back-road path. The tolls are typically used to defray the cost of building the toll roads. Given the choice I usually pay the toll.
2) I'm telling myself that the $10 may go into a Sprint fund to increase and expand the 4G network, which will benefit everyone.

That's how I see it....going back to my happy place!! lol

But Sprint is charging you the "toll" even if you take the long back road.
I feel the same as you and I understand the $10 for 4g but the EVO is a 3G only phone for most of us at this point why should we be charged for something not available If $10 is such a trivial amount I will gladly accept donations to my paypal account. feel free to donate as much or as little as like. Thanks in advance for your generous contributions.:)

First time poster, long time thread lurker here

I'm currently on a legacy plan w/ Sprint (a F&C retention plan) where I pay 50$ a month for 1200 anytime min, free 7pm nt's, free unlimited data (aside from text) and I knuckle up and swallow the 20$ unlimited text charge as well at pay 10$ for an extra line for my parents that draw from my pool of minutes.. I have a 20% Corp Discount thanks to my college credit union (from 6 years ago lol)

I'm on a Touch Pro 2, (free after 4 insurance claims with the original TP and enough) and I'm currently out of contract.

I'm about to get my parents a burner (for The Wire fans on here) aka Pre-Paid phone because during the last 2 years on their line, they've used about 72 minutes... it doesn't make sense to get the family plan when switching to the EVO and having to ditch my legacy plan (it's no SERO by any means)

For those out of contract..and planning on getting the EVO, I don't see what there is to fuss about the 10$ 'remove cap' fee...I def use the PAM feature at airports and traveling (hotel broadband all depends on where you are, PAM always works and reliably...even at 3G , beats most hotel offereings)...it's saved my ass and let me work while my cable internet is down or whatever the case might be. Paid for itself many times, and I have to be cognizant of the 5gb cap (im one of those people...and no, not pr0n dl'ing lol)

Personally, I plan to use the Everything Plus Referral Program (using Russ Mcguire's cred's or my buddy who manages a sprint store cred's)...grab the 59.99 deal and the 10$ 'remove cap / EVO' fee doesn't hurt at all..

Maybe my plan is flawed and sorry for such a long intro post...but, I figured someone else out there might be in the same boat...

PS, I'm in the camp where if they advertise unlimited...change the TOS (and if you stick with them, that's agreement to their TOS) and then they pull back and say, welllll the cap is actually 250 gigs a month (I'm looking at YOU Comcast!) then I get a little riled up..

If this is truly unlimited data, well I'm sure a quick ROM flash or 'hack' will open up that tethering that HTC throws in from the get-go (that I'm sure Sprint locks down so they can charge for) or the hotspot ability (which is the same $hit when you're on WinMo and using WMWifiRouter..for free! ..well app costs, thats it) that comes included and heralded with Android 2.2 (which will come out for the Nexus and EVO sometime soon...crosses fingers)

Thanks to all who posted all the helpful content thus far in this thread...and the especially to the person who summarized 10 pages of updates from yesterday to today -- hilarious and provoked me to Register on here...good stuff!

If you are getting a 20% corporate discount (EVP), wouldn't it be cheaper to use that instead of the EPRP deal? The reason I ask is I also have a corporate discount and it looks to be cheaper than the EPRP deal.
Am I calculating this correctly?
EVP -- 70+10=80-16(20%discount)=64
EPRP -- 60+10=70
Thanks.

Placed my preorder at bestbuy 930 this morning. $50 deposit given as gift card as usual. Told me that phone MAY come sooner than June 4th. I will receive a call when arrives to set up appointment to activate. Rep also stated that unlikely that anyone walking in on the 4th will get a phone as all the phones they get will mostly likely be taken with preorders. Said this is what happened last year with palm pre - none available on launch day if not preordered. I was first preorder so i will definatly get my evo by june 4 or sooner maybe. While i was there the rep got 4 phone calls about preoder for evo. Also got interesting news about 4g in my area. I live just outside the chicago 4g map and rep told me chicago 4g expanding to my area later this year. Hope correct. Then i wont mind the extra $10 so much.

Your being a little unreasonable. Sprint is a business and its business is to make money. Asking them to give you their top end product and services for free is just plain dumb. 10$ is cheaper then a lot of services they offer, namely the blackberry service, and you are GETTING something in return. Making a "donation" is giving money way...there is NOTHING in return.

phat thats not entirely true because you arnt getting much if you live in a non 4g area. i can understand the argument but im not worried because my area will be lit up in less than 6 months so its a moot point

My first post! =) I've been lurking unregistered sinceCTIA awaiting price info before joining the AF community. Now that the price is out, I've pretty much made up my mind that I WILL be switching from the Palm Pre (which I've liked) to the HTC Evo!

I think I'm going to opt for Radio Shack's pre-order offer which begins tomorrow, Friday May 14th, because it's closer to my house than Best Buy AND Radio Shack is offering a $20 accessory credit if you pre-order before May 30th: Cell Phones from RadioShack

I do not see that as being unreasonable. The guy/girl is getting charged for what he/she cannot even use yet.

I honestly believe that if you live in a 4g city then you should get charged for 4g.

HOW do we know the discount will apply to this $10 'add-on'???!!

HOW do we know the discount will apply to this $10 'add-on'???!!

Yeah, good point. I've been wondering the same. Usually add-ons are not subject to monthly discounts. Employer discounts are a % off your base plan price...if the $10 is an add-on, rather than a wole new plan, I doubt that it will be subject to discount.

I have a corporate discount and it applies to all add-ons.

Oh, really? I just subcribed to Sprint TV Xtra which is $9.99. I figured my corp discount wouldn't apply to this since it's an add-on. For example, insurance is still $7 whether you have a corp discount or not. I won't get my new bill 'till next month, so I won't be able to verify about the -print TV Xtra fee.

Its not all about not being able to afford for people but sprint is forcing 99% of the people to pay for something they will never use. Because the few lucky ones have 4G most of us don't and I have to pay for it. Its the principle of it. Besides better hardware which is all thanks to HTC the Evo really dosn't add anything extra over the Hero. I can't believe some people don't have a problem with this. You are giving sprint $10 extra for absolutelly nothing.

I agree it is a little silly, but I understand Sprint's point of view. The $10 fee isn't for using 4G. It's for using a lot of data in general. Sprint understands that this phone will easily use a lot more data on average than any other phone they sell. The front facing camera works on 3G, as does 95% of all the other apps. So a lot of 3G data is going to be used, and Sprint said themselves 3G cost more to deliver to consumers.

I don't agree with them charging the $10, but it's understandable and will probably go towards building out their 4G coverage.

I just spoke to Sprint and went to Best Buy... This may be known info, but I'll share my experience anyway.

SPRINT:
I first called Sprint to ask several questions regarding the Evo... I filtered through the scripted responses and got some (seemingly) unreliable info...
* The sales rep kept stating the wrong day for the Evo release
* I asked about 4G coming to Syracuse, NY and she immediately said "Yes, it is coming." I believe I could have made up a city name and would have gotten the same response.
* Through Sprint, the phone will be 299.99 with a $100 rebate. I was able to negotiate an additional $25 off the phone if I bought it through them.
* Through Sprint, the rep mentioned the possibility to give me an even larger discount than my corporate discount (20%) if I bought the phone through them... However, they could not give me a quantitative figure -- she said 25-40% off depending on several factors. Take this part w/ a grain of salt.
* Sprint won't pre-order. They can pre-approve your credit, take down your info and call you on the 4th. You'll then, of course, have to wait for it to be shipped to you.
* When I spoke with the rep, she did not mention the extra $10 fee at all. I was interested in the 450min plan for the EVO and she said it would simply be $69.99 before my discount.
* CREDIT: I was approved for 5 lines, 0 deposit, 0 spending limit w/ not amazing credit.

Best Buy:
* I went to a best buy in Syracuse, NY. At first, the sales person said "we are not taking pre-orders for the EVO." I asked her if another Best Buy in town would be... As she checked on this for me, she mentioned that they literally just started taking pre-orders (as in within the last 5 minutes). This was at around 2pm EST. I was the first person on the list -- they schedule you a time to come in and pick up the phone and activate it. 10am for me.
* To pre-order, you pay a $50 deposit in the form of a BB gift card. If you choose to buy the EVO, your gift card is applied toward the balance of the phone. The phone is $199.

Hope this helps... GL.

i pre ordered this morning when BB opened at 10...was actually surprised there was no line at all...one guy finishing up his preorder but that's it...has anyone been to a BB where there was more anticipation? hope this is not indicative of the overall response to the evo come launch day.....i also am wondering if anyone else gets the feeling that in time, maybe sooner, maybe later, the hotspot fee will get reduced or eliminated as well as the 10 dollar fee....sprint has the jump on everyone with this phone and 4g...they very well could be maximizing on this very fact to get these early extra dollars....once the other carriers "catch up" the market will be much more competitive right? so sprint would have to adapt...sort of like how their was the 99 simply everything, then due to big red (i think) they created the 69 everything data....they are fortunate right now to be the first with something, and i think they know they won't be able to keep the prices as they are for too long, so they are milking it while they can....can't say i blame them...they haven't been in this position before....just a thought (ouch)

Hey guys,

I just went the retentions route like a few others have mentioned a few pages back. I basically told them that I was able to get a comparable plan and comparable phone with Verizon cheaper after my employee discount and they added the recurring 10$ credit to bill with a new 2year plan.

For others without an employee discount I would have said T-mobile instead since they currently have a comparable plan and phone. Also they didn't check to verify my claim that I could get a Verizon employee discount, so I suppose you could always go that route to.

For the others that are telling us to suck it up and shut up about the 10$ fee. It's not about paying the 10$ or being a cheapskate. It's about the principle of being forced to pay for something you aren't able to use to it's full potential. The claim is that we have to pay this because we will potentially be using more bandwidth with our new super phone. So change the damn plan to limited data instead of unlimited data, and charge the extra 10 dollars for unlimited data. I could never dream to come close to the current 5gig cap with my spotty 1XEV service.

But Sprint is charging you the "toll" even if you take the long back road.

Just want to drop in my .02 before everyone complains further. I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, the $10 add on is NOT because its a 4G phone. Sprint knows that the majority of us aren't in a 4G covered area, but because the purpose of this device is multimedia along with video chat, people will definitely be using more data than before. It doesn't matter if you were only hitting 500MB or 800MB, you WILL be hitting more data usage per month if you get this phone. HENCE, they are charging you the extra $10 because you WILL be using more data and data heavy apps.

I just want people to stop complaining because they think Sprint is charging the extra fee for 4G, its NOT, its for the increased 3G usage. IF Sprint wanted to charge for 4G, they would only charge users who are covered in 4G areas instead of making it mandatory for ALL Evo users.

This is NOT fact, but my own opinion based on business reasoning.

Hey just some info I contacted Best Buy today and was going to pre order the phone and I asked if they would be in on the 4th and they said we are not sure the best buys stores are only getting a limited of phones, but you would have your phone no later than July 4th, if you pre order. They went on to tell me that they have to set up appointments for you to come in and get the phone and activate it. They said if you are not one of the first people to pre order it could take a while to set up your appointment. Then i said thanks and hung up.

It looks like your best bet is Radio Shack or Sprint unless you are one of the first ppl to pre order the Evo.

It also 50 dollar down payment at best buy as well.

That's odd. I just called a local Best Buy and they said that if I go in to pre-order the EVO it guarantees me a phone on the day of the release. Maybe it depends on how big the Best Buy is.

Hey Moze, could you please edit your post and take out that picture? It is screwing up my (and I suspect a lot of people's) browser width. Gaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!11

Thanks Moze for doing that so quickly!

glad you brought that up....what xtra do u get with the xtra? is it completely everything that sprint tv has to offer?...i've been thinking about doing this when i get the evo seeing as how it will enhance the overall experience on that gorgeous screen...i do want to make sure that the 4g shld resolve all the grainy picture and lags with sprint tv though correct...shld be a flawless experience now correct?
