I just got salt water in my DInc. :( It was making funny blinky lights on the notification light. I took it apart and hosed it down with electro contact cleaner. We'll see. I may have to reanimate my old Krzr.

I hope it's okay! My heart stopped when I saw Krzr. That's what caused me to start hating Moto. Then my mother's Droid2 made it 100%

so nice to see some love for ClockworkMod and ROM manager in this thread. i really liked them both on my droid, but even mentioning those words in the Thunderbolt forum was almost enough to start a fight. i used them in secret for awhile, then switched to TeamWinRecovery just to avoid being berated every time i mentioned CWM. still haven't figured out what those guys have against it, but it will be a welcome addition to my GNex as soon as it comes out of the box.
Sorry, I don't follow. What's the difference between ClockworkMod and TeamWinRecovery? And why would the Thunderbolt community like one and not the other?

Did you try de -oxit? That stuff is amazing! Droped phone in toilet once, dried with hair dryer from a safe distance then sprayed with deoxit and after 24 hours all was well :)

Go to Android & Windows Phone: Tablets, Apps, & ROMs @ xda-developers and look around the forums for the GN forum (will be near the bottom) then find the GN Android Development sub forum and read up. They'll have everything you need to get caught up on rooting and ROMs. :)

Better still - Galaxy Nexus - All Things Root - Android Forums

In our All Things Root forum, you'll find the _right_ links to follow to XDA or other sites with the right answers and tools, and you'll have a flame-free venue to ask questions and get help from people you know and trust from chatting with them in this forum. :) ;)

XDA Developers is a great site and we fully support their fine efforts (as they do ours), but their focus is really for developers - they have the tools and more developers, we have the community that cares about users helping users.

I have a question for you guys (since you all seem to know a lot about how this stuff works):

I want to upgrade to the GNex, along with my mom (who has a DInc), but my sister (who also has a DInc) complains that she needs a new phone more than I do (I got a Thunderbolt for ~7-8 months, then sold it in anticipation for the GNex).

Basically, we only have two upgrades available soon (one from this August--mine--and one for 12/29, which I will ask to be moved up). The next upgrade after that isn't until July 2012... so my question is, how would we go about satisfying everyone? Keep in mind that I MUST have the GNex ;)

BTW my sister missed out on the free DInc2 deal (although that would have used up one of our upgrades)...

I would say whoever is paying for them would get to decide who gets the upgrade. What sounds fair is to replace the oldest phones. How is it that your mom and sister both have DInc's and you have a Thunderbolt, but you claim one of the available upgrades is yours?

I had an experience similar to someone earlier today. Went to my local verizon store today and asked about the nexus. She immediately knew what I was talking about and called it the nexus prime and told me that it had originally been planned to be released over black friday, but has been delayed until next year. Hopefully she is just spouting nonsense and this thing is announced tomorrow.

I'm not sure you got what I meant - you'd pay the $150 or so to terminate the old contract, then get the Nexus at the 2 year contract price with a new contract.

As a mom who's trying to keep 5 kids happy with their phones, I can see your parents' viewpoint - your TB is/was newer than your sister's Dinc, just because you want a new phone more doesn't mean you deserve it more.

But I'm the most tech-savvy one in my family! I help with all sorts of computer/phone problems so I should be rewarded... :P

Updated the LTE vs. GSM comparison with more pictures from the Best Buy site (thanks again zedster)

No no no - please don't use a hair dryer on a phone. It can force water deeper into crevices that it might not have made it to yet.

Because everyone gets up in arms whenever there's a choice available and sides can be drawn and newer is always better.

Your phone will have a number of file partitions. CWM will back those up in one fell swoop. It just works. It's the grand-daddy. I still use it.

Other recovery tools give more options to accomplish the same thing in different ways.

Nothing wrong with choice, but unless a particular recovery is not doing the job for a specific phone model, bickering about which to use won't be tolerated. (Guess I need to go see the Bolt forums.)

Discussions educating as to the differences for healthy personal choices are always ok.

I stopped by another Verizon store today, my third location in a little over a week. This sales rep told me he is the one at this store that is getting this phone. He said that usually happens about a week before it comes out but he hasn't received his yet. He then said if it doesn't come out in another week or so, then he doesn't expect it to come out before Christmas. I hope he's wrong...

I got the DInc on launch day, then bought the Thunderbolt off-contract for pretty cheap on eBay. Therefore the upgrade is on my line, from the DInc in 2010.

Anyways, I'm now stuck with my sister's old, beaten up OG Droid (although it's because I sold my Thunderbolt in anticipation for the GNex), so because of this I think I should get a new phone (my sister's DInc works perfectly fine and should last until July...)

Wow. Haven't been around much since the holidays, but just skimming through the posts nice to see things are normal. Han is up and down, BB's avatars are keeping the masses entertained, windsock is up to his usual tricks.. and still no release date for the Gnex. Anything else I might have missed?

Crazy to see the thread over 50k posts and 1000 pages though! Kudos all around!

Sorry, I don't follow. What's the difference between ClockworkMod and TeamWinRecovery? And why would the Thunderbolt community like one and not the other?

2 different versions of custom recovery software made by 2 different sets of developers. they perform the same basic functions (wipe, backup, change ROMs, restore), but differ slightly in other areas. like i said, i still have no idea why they didn't like Clockwork in the 'bolt forum, it worked fine for me. TeamWin did have its advantages (auto wipe when installing a new ROM, touchscreen input, charge while in recovery, faster backup/restore, etc.), but i still prefer Clockwork overall just because i am more familiar with it.

So there's no visible difference between the backs of the two versions, especially as the Best Buy images don't have the Verizon logo on the back... hm...

(I decided not to make a comparison between them, since it wouldn't benefit anyone anyway :p)

This thread is getting depressing. After Christmas? Really? At that rate better phones will already be announced and on their way.

I don't see any reason why sales reps would get phones a week before they launch... keep in mind this phone's release date hasn't even been announced yet!

You're not stuck with her phone. You're lucky to have it because you sold your phone before you had a new one (or even a release date for the one you wanted). Unless you sold your Thunderbolt for the $800 you need to buy the Nexus, I'd say it was a poor decision. Using your logic, your sister should sell her phone right before the nexus comes out. Since you have her old phone, she would have NO phone, and would need the upgrade more. You can't say you need it more because you screwed yourself by selling your phone early.

I agree with forced air like a can of compressed air at short range certainly a big no - no ;)

The blow dryer was held at a distance of about 2 feet. Was just enough heat and gentle wind to dry it out in about an hour. It was witnessed through my 10x loupe then deoxitized. Worked really well I should have specified this earlier.

my suggestion Scottg, start shoveling snow/raking leaves/mowing yards (depending on where you live) and by yourself the GNex. How much of the $$ do you have from selling the TB? If you sold it in anticipation for the GNex then you should still have all of it right.....

Seems irrational to release a new smartphone - especially a flagship device - after the holidays when everyone's money is spent. Not saying that VZW has never done anything that appears irrational to us... but they ARE in the business of making money for their stockholders. No doubt it's a balancing act for them.
